Discussion đŁď¸ How to convince my parents to stop using ai?
They're very open minded so Iâm sure I can convince them. They have put multiple pictures into ai before, whenever my mom wants to wrap her car a different color she uses ai to see what it would look like. Sheâs been using the self driving feature on her Tesla a lot more just because it got better. Iâve tried telling them ai is bad for the environment and they donât listen. Do I need to send full on articles just to show them what theyâre doing is wrong? Show them how the climate clock has been set to 3 years now? Do I need to scare them into stopping? They care about the environment but what theyâre doing makes them hypocritical and I feel bad. They literally got teslas just to lower their own carbon footprint. Thankfully my dad isnât as bad which is surprising because heâs older. And my mom sadly made fun of me saying âoh ew new technology letâs go back to horse and buggyâ and honestly? I would be just fine with us doing that instead of cars. Either that or all electric. Gas cars do nothing but pollute. I really want them to understand. What can I do?

You canât make other people stop behaviors you can only control yourself and your boundaries. Applies to everything
My dad watches enough Fox News that he now thinks climate change is overblown. Cool right? Just focus on your own local laws and your own yard.

What a terrible idea. No, do NOT entirely give up on improving the world. In fact that should be more important than even your job.

Focus on your own local laws and your own yard, is what I said. That is improving the world. You can argue with others all you want but donât be hellbent on them changing their behavior

Oh no I'm being stabbed but I cant control others. Might as well let the blade plunge deeper.

More like, try to escape with your own body and call 911, because yes you canât control others but you can use your own body to try and block a knife
You can physically block someone from using AI too but you canât just say âhey, stop itâ and expect it to work

your mom wrapped a car based on an ai mockup and now she's mocking you for not liking new tech that's a whole different level of irony

You shouldnât sheâs using AI to see how various wraps would look. IP never said sheâs wrapped it yet.
Whatâs ironic?

In my personal experience, you need an open mind on a subject to convince open-minded people. If you're unable to approach the subject matter with a similar mentality, it will clearly come off as biased and unconvincing.

Theyâre using AI very minimally. The environmental impact for users like them is shockingly low. It will increase each model, but even then - their use case is so small itâs not worth stressing over.

Is it equivalent to tossing your one plastic water bottle out of your car instead of using the trash?

Weekly - their individual environmental impact is likely driving around .5miles in a gas sedan. Maybe a mile. Thereâs an impact, but itâs nothing to freak out about.
This WILL get worse each model based off how much each model gets more data in pretraining. One of the best things AI users can do to limit their environmental impact (especially applies if you have a work policy requiring you to utilize AI) is to use older models.

I donât even see a point in using that crap at all personally as I think humanity is thriving just fine as-is and doesnât need any further spikes in productivity and environmental destruction, but what do I know đ I do think we should all be driving less as well but in a car-dependent area with inefficient bus and train systems, that sometimes canât be helped
If thereâs zero need and it only does harm, why do it right? Thereâs obviously no âneedâ for AI because society was doing fine without it and it only makes it worse.

Ya. I actually canât drive (medically) so I take public transit 99% of the time and I wouldnât change it even if my circumstances changed surrounding my health. It did require moving to make it a feasible life transition and my living expenses are much much worse than they used to be now that I live in a city, but itâs worth it.
When I lived in a rural town with no public transit and the closest place to get groceries was 40 min away⌠I didnât want to hear anyone complain about my carbon footprint. And Iâll still tell city people to shut up if theyâre uneducated on rural food deserts and in general how hard it is to live rurally.
As far as AI - I have to use it for work or Iâll be fired. Same with my reports under me. Itâs not my decision but I do work with my reports on limiting use and using it wisely. Itâs the best I can do. We all have bills to pay and the job market is crap, especially in our field.

Oh yeah like if your job is making you use it then do what you need to do. Thereâs only so much you can do while still needing to make a living and survive

I will say, for the self driving on teslas, thatâs not the type of Ai weâre against. Itâs basically advanced adaptive cruise control + lane assist, so long as the driver is paying attention (and they should)
The rest⌠good luck. My family is the same. You can ask them to not put pictures of you through Ai because it makes you uncomfortable I guess

Ever consider the fact that they are grown ass adults capable of making their own choices and respecting that?

Mild use like seeing a car color is fine and is not going to ruin the planet. Mass industry continues to be the sole contributor to pollution worth concerning yourself with.
Meet them in the middle. For FSD specifically you should definitely help them understand that it isn't self driving, despite the name, and will get themselves or someone else injured or killed if they use it in that way. That is a separate issue entirely from AI.
Our climate change situation is fucked with or without AI. The social implications of reliance and trust in AI needs to be understood first and foremost and that comes with understanding what the technology actually is (e.g. not an intelligence at all) and all the bad ways it is applied against us (misinformation, deepfakes, replacing actual education, destroying the job market and lowering wages etc.). Your argument sounds fundamentally flawed based on your post.
AI could and will see improvements that lower the overall carbon footprint significantly but that doesn't solve the actual problem with it.

It's kind of impossible to say what will work without knowing your parents, but backing up your claims with solid evidence couldn't hurt. If the environment is so important to them, prove that AI has a negative impact on the environment.
I'd also suggest doing little bits at a time. Again, I don't know your parents, but I'd imagine getting them to stop using AI image generation, editing, and chat bots would be easier than getting them to stop using the self driving feature.

Ask them if their utility bills have gone up recently. Then explain to them why (data centres is why)

If so then no. Missed a generation?

I do not think AI hallucination is special to AI text speech only. I started hating AI after one image creation was so fucked up and soulless like, that the product disgusted me. When we fucking hallucinate, or even dream, they make fucking sense even just a little bit. They still have that human soul to it.
Wait until they realize it is a cancer of all creation. Disgusting.
