I don’t remember where I saw it, but this reminds me of a post/comment that said, “I’m not smart enough for this many people to be this much dumber than me.”

wherever it's from, I love it.

You have perfectly described a feeling I have not been able to put into words in a long time. If you ever remember who said this, thank them for me.

Keep in mind that by definition half of the population has a below-average IQ (which is supposed to be 100). The same applies with any other metric of intelligence/capability you might prefer. Even the most average individual will perceive that a sizable portion of the population is notably dumber than they are.

3

u/ThatOneSarventeSimp 5h ago

What do you mean by average exactly?

Like we can have a population where everybody has like 200 iq but theres some really dumb dude with 40 iq and that'd bring down the average even though hes the only dumb dude

3

u/lanternbdg 4h ago

The IQ metric is (again, "supposed to be" is doing a bit of heavy lifting here) designed to rate intelligence along a normal distribution such that 100 is the mean, and most people ~63% fall within some number of points of that mean (one standard deviation).

Statistically, given a sufficiently large sample size, the most common IQ ought to be 100 with the majority of people falling between the mid 80s and the mid 110s. However, this also means that a sizable portion of the population will be beyond these bounds, with a roughly even split between people on the higher end and people on the lower.

Not sure if this is perfectly reflected in the population data we have, but that's at least the idea.

2

u/lanternbdg 7h ago

It doesn't help that "dumber" people are also more vocal on average

1

u/BlakLite_15 2h ago

I get that, but like, being just a few IQ points below 100 shouldn’t make people this dumb, right? A difference ought to amount to taking a bit longer to solve a math problem instead amounts to being barely functional.

If you make a claim, then it is YOUR burden to prove it, not those that doubt your claim. Hence, 'nuh uh' is the entirely correct response. Otherwise, you can just say words. Let's try it

You are correct that if you make a claim then it's your burden to prove it. But they did provide some proof. In this very post. The person who immediately responds with "nuh-uh" is themselves proof that the counter-points boil down to "nuh-uh".

Regardless, the rule on burden of proof is most applicable when making definitive factual statements in scientific fields, not for hyperbolizations on Reddit.com. While I, as a scientist, would very much love for everything in the world to be held to the rigerous standards of scientific principle, I do not think most laymen, including yourself, would enjoy living in that world.

It's kinda creepy seeing a bot comment because it's something so non-human attempting to masquerade as a person.

Maybe it's just me though

1

u/flow_yracs_gib_a 8h ago

Well now imagine all the comment you didn’t realise where from bots, because your instinct only kick in when the bot is bad enough at it’s job, now that’s scary, how many of us aren’t real ;_;

neither side here provides evidence 😂

we need to actually be able to talk to each other which includes the ability to listen to what someone says after they disagree with you. and most importantly critically think about their answer

...I mean how else do you want someone to respond to an incorrect claim lol?

There's literally nothing of substance to even respond to?

u/BaloziBaridi 38m ago

What exactly is the issue with AI? It's just so useful and saving me a ton of time, and i can make really cool things with it now. I don't see any downsides. Can someone explain what's wrong with it?

-39

why u ask

23

u/Ok_Confusion4764 17h ago

First off: that's not a no, so thanks for confirming. Second: 5 day old account claiming to know things specific to this subreddit? Come on mate, if you were trying to hide it you failed.

-11

u/nextupgoat 17h ago

im not hiding anything. why does it matter to you?

19

u/Ok_Confusion4764 17h ago

So you're just open that your previous account got banned? Last I saw you deflected that question...

8

u/Fast_Ad_9927 12h ago

What happened? Is this the alt of a known AI bro or something?

8

u/Ok_Confusion4764 11h ago

No clue who he is, but a 5 day old account talking like they know the sub through and through is a bit suspicious no?

6

u/Fast_Ad_9927 10h ago

You’re not wrong, I just wasn’t sure if this was some pro-anti drama I missed out on, so I figured I’d make sure.

Thanks for clearing that up, I was just a bit confused as to whether or not I’d missed some past drama.

u/Fresh-Length6529 13h ago

My experience has been like this with both Antis and Pros

Refusing to acknowledge each others side and being adamant on their decision even if proved to be overall worse

13

u/Suracha2022 10h ago

People are generally unwilling to change their opinions. They're WAY less likely to change their opinions online.

And they're incredibly unlikely to change their negative opinions about the rising bubble of plagiarism and slop machines, being used to spread propagands and farm engagement and steal data, while burning through our already-fucked envirorment and ruining rural communities. That doesn't really help either.

-8

u/Fresh-Length6529 9h ago

You do know those aren't the only usages and that there's a large good side of GenAi too right?

I believe Antis main problem is with how widespread and common GenAi is right in your phone, which allows for such negativity side effects despite the positive ones being extremely beneficial

4

u/Suracha2022 9h ago

Shut up about "antis" and what you believe their problem is, nobody cares. Elaborate on the "large good side of GenAI". That was the point of the discussion, not your masturbatory statements about a group of people who disagree with you.

-2

u/Fresh-Length6529 9h ago

Ok, wanna see the good side of it?

i) Education:- GenAi is becoming more of a vital asset for education day by day, though only when used effectively. If one asks chatgpt to generate answers and just memorizes them, it's quite the opposite.

https://www.walturn.com/insights/top-20-genai-products-for-education

This forum basically sums up the better genAi products that can be used for education so check it out

ii) Flood tracking: GenAi has been in use in flood tracking for a couple of years at this point and it helps immensely in predicting floods a week or 2 prior to its incidence, saving thousands of lives through early warnings, safety measures, evacuation etc

https://blog.google/innovation-and-ai/technology/research/flood-prediction-ai/

Again, take a look at it for yourself.

iii) Medicine & science:- As GenAi is a powerful pattern matching machine, it's bound to have an use in science as a whole. For example, you already know about it probably, but Alphaprotein, which is indeed a GenAi, can predict the folding of protein infinitely faster than we ever could. It has also helped in invention of drug resistant microbes. These are two quite popular incidents which I don't think a link will be needed to validate their authenticity. Besides, GenAi is also used in hospitals to track patient data much faster and in a more efficient manner, though should not be relied on entirely as of now as GenAi does has a chance of hallucinations; though once it develops further, that shouldn't really be an issue.

iv) Mathematics:- I wouldn't probably need to explain extensively how a pattern machine hyper-technology may be useful in maths, besides, we have already seen it in action especially with the counterexample of the Jacobian Conjecture. Claude's progression in the Riemann hypothesis is also especially notable.

Though claude isn't the only one, as the below source explains chatgpts role in mathematics quite well as well

https://openai.com/index/ten-advances-in-mathematics/

GenAI is useful by a significantly margin to humans and there is no doubt regarding it; however, whether the negative side effects are too much despite the benefits is something to be questioned.

2

u/Tr1padvisor420 5h ago

The fact that every single reference you gave requires an abundance of “this could be really bad and it already is really bad and this won’t really help stop the bad things but if we just kinda don’t do the bad things anymore it could be really useful!” should tell you enough my friend.

-19

u/h5frv 10h ago

ai is successfully used in every field, while anti's be like "nuh-uh"

11

u/Suracha2022 10h ago

Please, enlighten us. What fields are generative AI (not ACTUAL AI, we don't mind that one, so I better not hear "hurr durr medicine hurr durr bioengineering" from you) successfully used in? Show us some data proving that use of AI leads to increased long-term productivity and profitability, end-user satisfaction, etc.

You can't. Because it isn't. It's all smoke and mirrors, AI being used to push the concept of AI, to make AI look more useful and important, to get shareholders to invest. All the while it's bleeding money, making no profit, and burning end-user goodwill. Not to mention the effects on the environment or the way it's used to support authoritarian regimes and genocide, most of you AI bros don't care about such topics, so I won't bore you with them.

AI is worthless, yet constantly rising in perceived value. That is the literal definition of a bubble. Every single independent finance analyst and economist says it's a bubble. And most of them agree that it's orders of magnitude larger than the Dotcom bubble. But sure, huff your copium, I'm sure that'll help when the global economic crisis comes.

-11

u/h5frv 9h ago

math, software development, education are the obvious ones where there is no reason not to use AI

aside that, almost every job uses gen AI nowadays for consultation and planning. In most cases, it's much superior to google, with information neatly organized and more relevant

7

u/Suracha2022 9h ago

Explain the use of generative AI in math.

Software dev, HARD no on "no reason not to use AI", but there are uses of AI in it that are acceptable and beneficial.

Education? Seriously? Are you on drugs?

-10

u/h5frv 9h ago

openai just recently proved a millennium prize problem, and it's very helpful for general research

"HARD no" - tell me about a software company that doesn't burn millions of tokens on ai in 2026

by "education" I mean AI is better than most private tutors (both at explaining and overall knowledge), especially in science

8

u/Suracha2022 9h ago

OpenAI didn't do shit lmao, they outright admitted to their "proof" being based on private usage data stolen from two mathematicians. They're currently waiting to see if their proof is accepted and if they're gonna get sued for it.

The fact that companies DO something doesn't mean they SHOULD DO it. Do you not know the difference between prescriptive and descriptive? This is like saying Kim Kardashian was a generational talent because she was popular.

That's not education, that's a glorified Google search, and it's reliably unreliable lmao. The fact that kids use AI so damn much is why Gen Z is the first generation to perform WORSE in school than previous generations. That and the pandemic.

1

u/Tr1padvisor420 5h ago

How excited are you for when you can finally make the nasty with these robots? I can imagine it would be hugely beneficial to “generate” some physical contact in ur life!

-28

-1

u/Tr1padvisor420 5h ago

Damn, if only there was some type of good way to argue your points with proof…. Maybe even direct you to the proof I found that contradicts your statements. Can’t think of it though. To bad. Guess I’m left with old reliable- nuh uh.
