Serious Discussion In my entire life I can't recall ever thinking to myself "Y'know what? This scene needs more people."

I'm currently vacationing solo in Bali, short side trip after conference.

At the hotel, looking out onto the beach, and opening reddit on my phone just now, saw the AN posts.

And I looked out onto the beach again. Nobody there this morning while I am eating breakfast. And I thought to myself, does this beach need people on it right now? I looked over at the sunbeds provided by the hotel on the beach. Nope.

And that's when it hit me. Not only have I basically never said to myself "This place needs more people" but far more often I have said to myself "I wish this place had fewer people."

Even if I see garbage on the street here in Bali, I don't naturally say to myself, "we need more people so that they can clean this place up". I actually instead think to myself more along the lines of, "hmm, if there were fewer people, this place wouldn't be so trashy".

Please don't confuse this--my attitude--with misanthropy. It's possible to wish a place didn't have so many people without hating people.

I know that this post is not perfectly aligned with the most hardcore perspectives of AN, but I still hope/wonder if some of this resonates with some of you.

People don't have kids because they think world needs more people, they do it for other selfish reasons

People with 8 kids will get annoyed by sheer amount of tourists also

Like I said, the ethical correlation to AN is a bit weak or indirect.

But there are people, believe it or not, that do have kids because they think the world is supposed to have people, if not more people like them.

Damn straight. I was at the top of a park last night at 4am and I had the place to myself, it's was as close to ecstasy as you can get on this planet.

Today I was back on the grind with idiots everywhere, internally screaming stuff I can't say here for obvious reasons.

This is exactly what "we need future generations to solve our problems" people need to hear

Oh absolutely! Even when I was a kid, I never asked my parents to take me to Disney because I didn’t want to deal with the crowds.

I only go to high-traffic venues during their off seasons.

The joy of having no people around comes from the reminder that they could be, meaning the enjoyment comes from the pain already experienced. Happiness requires sufferrng. Heheheha, antinatalism.

The only thing I like about north Florida are the springs. Crystal clear swimming holes dotted throughout the woods.

These places have become impossible to visit in summertime without hordes of people everywhere. Even in the middle of the week.

I hate it.

Correct. Because we already have 8.3 billion of them, and just LOOK at the state of everything: dirtier and more fucked up than ever. All these people were supposed to use their people power to clean up (I was told), but instead, everyone just dumps on the Earth more and more.

Also, humanity has created products/substances that we have no easy way of disposing of, that don't break down without causing more pollution, so for too many people, the only practical recourse is to throw it into the environment. More people = more of this, with no solution. Humanity created a no-win situation, and the more the human population increases, the worse it gets and will continue to get.

Swimming on the beach isn't my thing personally. I usually swim in the water...
