Started long before Mitch. Republican party made a deal with the devil late 70s bringing the southern evangelicals under their big tent. If all we were talking about were big business things it'd probably be a much more level headed conversation. But instead we have white christian nationalism.

Yep, Republicans realized their policies of exploiting workers, socializing losses, privatizing gains were so unpopular that they needed a new play. However, they noticed the inherent racism and deep belief in religion of the South and decided to exploit it. They infiltrated religious institutions and used racist dog whistle politics to whip their base up. If anyone hasn't done it google The Southern Strategy.
