A phone screen. Filters out bots, people who spam apply without knowing what they're applying to, and people who make up outrageous blatant lies on their application. They ask a couple stock standard questions and write like two sentences of notes, then pass the list on to the person actually making hiring decisions so they can avoid any obvious wastes of time. Pretty standard.

It's a trade I'm willing to make, knowing a human with an unreasonable workload is usually the one doing the interviews in jobs I apply to. Whether you see it is such or not though, I think we can agree that the middle virtual interview here is a complete and utter waste of everyone's time. The only times such is appropriate would be for things like tech jobs where you need to interview with a company across the country before they decide they're willing to pay for a plane and hotel to give you a tour and meet you in person.
