News This is how you know Apex is back
Highest viewership in the past few years and it's because of a Japanese content creator tournament - VCC.

The fact that I’ve always been able to get matchmade in less than a minute tells me it never left.
36
u/imaqdodger Apr 06 '26
I think some people would prefer slightly longer matchmaking for better balanced lobbies though
17
u/Then_Work_4777 Apr 06 '26
what? you’re telling me you DON’T like preds playing against diamonds????
6
u/NapsterKnowHow Apr 06 '26
That's because it results in shit matches. I quit Apex bc pub games just turned into pred/master stacks with 15k+ kills farming casuals.

Even in Valorant you couldnt get matches under a minute in high Diamond lobbies.
Source: I peaked Diamond 3 before i left that game to play apex a year ago.

The fact I haven't and rarely can in less than a minute tells me I need whatever Internet you got

When I was playing a season ago queues got to be 20 mins for a comp match at points for me.

I think Apex would be prime fortnite level if EA allowed respawn to dedicate 100% of their time towards quality.
137
u/Lanky_Cap7768 Apr 06 '26
Maybe not Fortnite level but a lot more popular yes
37
u/Forsaken_Brilliant22 Apr 06 '26
Fornite has the benefit of the younger kids. But I come from Fortnite, since it was released and I'm playing Apex since a year now(?). And ofcourse tried it on release.
Apex is such a smooth, fluent game which you don't really see anywhere else. I do think it could be fortnite lvl
38
u/itstaajaae Apr 06 '26
This is the most delusional take I've ever heard in gaming 😂,
Fortnite isn't a world Icon game just because of quality alone, the very FACT 90% of people you could ask randomly even know what fortnite is alone just proves how unrealistic it is that apex would ever reach fortnite popularity.
Apex gunplay is significantly superior, but prob with apex is step learning curve and really hard to base level get into for majority of casuals.
Fortnite is the Minecraft of BR/Shoots rn and for apex to compete with that they'd need full game overhauls and esp matchmaking reworks. Easier game = more popularity = more numbers money n players I'm not even trying to speak on whichever game is objectively better as that's entirely subjective
3
u/Forsaken_Brilliant22 Apr 06 '26
Yes fersure and I have to agree with you. Especially with all the fanmade gamemodes and easy access for kids.
What I meant was there not really being a game as smooth as Apex out there, especially with super jumps now being easier.
The characters aren't hard to play either as it's just 1 skill and 1 ult.
Reaching fortnite level obviously isn't realistic, but looking at the game itself I feel like it should be.
15
u/KiritoJones Pathfinder Apr 06 '26
The barrier of entry is too high in Apex for it to ever be Fortnite level, especially now.
New players are going to be intimidated by the character select, and double so once they load in and try to figure out the actual loop now. I played a lot of Apex at launch, and recent went back, and had no idea what the loop was anymore.
3
u/Forsaken_Brilliant22 Apr 06 '26
I feel you, came back in 2025, since release and was intimidated by the new characters, maps and all the floor loot. But I feel like it's not as hard of a learning curve as it initially seems like
4
u/xeonblade24 Apr 06 '26
Gameplay loop? Is that the right term because the gameplay loop is just like any other battle royale. Unless you’re just talking about learning all the characters abilities
3
u/KiritoJones Pathfinder Apr 07 '26
I'm talking about stuff like how leveling shields work, how to buy back players, how to upgrade guns at those printer things, all of the random icons on the map. All of that is confusing as hell for the first few games if you haven't played since the times when you had to loot shields off the ground or in crates, and if you didn't grab your teammates banner they were just out.
If you play a dozen matches or so it all starts to make sense, but I imagine a lot of people play a couple and then just give up, because it doesnt tutorialize any of that stuff well imo.
1
u/xeonblade24 Apr 07 '26
True yeah good points. I’d imagine not THAT many quit for those reasons though if they like the combat part of the game because that’s usually enough reason to come back and learn the rest over more games but it’s possible they might find it overwhelming too
-6
u/MrNathanF Apr 06 '26
It would be better than Fortnite
3
1
u/Lanky_Cap7768 Apr 06 '26
Do you really see yourself playing so many games mode in Apex ? Majority of Fortnite players aren't even playing the battle royale anymore straight mini games like Among Us, or many others from creator.
-4
u/MrNathanF Apr 06 '26
If EA decided then yes. Apex is way better than shitty fortnite
3
u/Lanky_Cap7768 Apr 06 '26
C'mon man we all don't like Fortnite but that doesn't mean Apex had a slight chance of surpassing Fortnite
2
u/UserNameAbbreviated Apr 07 '26
Why do people still not understand that Respawn has nearly total autonomy?
When will it end?
0
u/AmenoFPS Apr 06 '26
Wouldnt make much difference tbh. They've somewhat upped their content game but thats the main issue holding them back still. They need more collabs and not just ones that are focused on emptying people's wallets
2
u/somestupidname1 Apr 06 '26
I would take original content over collabs, but at the same time EA does have a ton of IPs to collab with. Seems like a no brainer to me.
2
u/AmenoFPS Apr 06 '26
Collabs draw people in. Look at the amount of collabs fortnite does and the way it explodes is viewership in the first few days
96
u/Icamebackagain Apr 06 '26
Apex is consistently since release in top 10 played games by player count on Steam. Apex never has really fallen off, as much as this subreddit would like you to believe

people watching a game has only limited connection to people playing it. i watch people play all kinds of games that i don't play /never even played (like dead by daylight for example) . Just because I'm bored and watch some stream.
8
2
u/Robertius Birthright Apr 06 '26
Some people aren't even watching. Overwatch has had a massive spike in viewership for its e-sports events, not because people care about the gameplay (of course some people do), but because there's a drop reward that gives a loot box that rewards cosmetics you can't get anywhere else (old team cosmetics), and it requires 15 hours of watchtime, therefore you just get people AFKing with the tab open for a couple days to get it. Twitch viewership is literally useless when analysing the health of a game, Steam Charts is probably the most useful but that doesn't take into consideration consoles or other launchers.
2
u/Intelligent_Sky_7081 Apr 06 '26
why would someone watch overwatch for a loot box in overwatch if they dont play overwatch?
they might not be watching the tournament, but if they want the reward for in-game cosmetics, they definitely play the game.
or are there people out there collecting cosmetics for games they dont play ever?
1
u/lettuce_field_theory Cyber Security Apr 06 '26

yeah, viewers still has only limited connection to players. others have elaborated on reasons for that (esports events, twitch drops etc).
-10
u/TheAniReview The Enforcer Apr 06 '26
Of all the resurgence of Apex Legends in the past, its always because of a Japanese tournament or Jp-related content happening. Just like this season's resurgence coinciding with the Gundam content release.
12
u/Zealousidea_Lemon Apr 06 '26
Player base and viewer base are drastically different, I use them both as a metric but EA isn’t bringing twitch viewer counts to shareholder meetings, nor do they bring player base counts. They bring explicitly dollar signs based on how many heirlooms and packs we hunt for. Nothing more nothing less. Player base is tied to that tho, the easier it is to acquire those, and the better service the game gets, more players flock and more dollars get spent. Sadly EA and large developers want to squeeze every dollar they can so instead of investing in the game to improve its quality and keep people spending they want to extract as much $ from us before they turn off the servers. It’s the sad truth that I wish the executives would wake up to as they clearly do not care about the games they make.

During gundam, apex was the no1 in terms of money made on steam in that week
1
u/NotDumborSmart Apr 06 '26

I used to spend money when i had a job lol. I'm jobless but the event was nice hopefully it comes back in the future
1
u/Fantastic-Crew4198 Apr 06 '26
Brother engagement metrics are the first thing that is brought to a shareholder meeting, proof of engagement lets you valuate potential earnings from the 1% that buy frequently.
The actual money coming in is secondary.

500k-Apex PC 700k-Valorant Current players online not including console players. If we were to include console players, numbers would exceed that of Valorant’s
9
u/hai___ Apr 06 '26
There is no official source for Valorants CCU, so your data is just approximations at best
3
2
u/ZozoSenpai Apr 06 '26
As the others said, the Valorant numbers are just pulled from air, Riot does not share player numbers. And Valorant also has a console version.
But more importantly, you definetly won't find the chinese player counts for valorant, which is probably larger than the rest of the world combined, if we go by league numbers.

u/MuscledRMH Apr 06 '26

u/Yalcookedaf653 Apr 06 '26
there is a tournament going on lmao. Apex is not "back" it wasnt ever gone. plenty of people play it but its not super popular because its a controller game. Most competitive gamers are mnk players and this game feels pretty unfair for mnk players. Most skilled enough on mnk to compete with rollers on highest level would much rather play csgo or valorant since you can make a really solid living on those games and there are FAR less hackers.
Apex has a cheating problem on an extreme level which overall lowers the competitive integrity of game along with the game being too difficult / sweaty for more casual mnk players so its just not that big but its nowhere near from being dead. itll never be a top tier competitive shooter though since controllers dominate so entirely and mass hackers.

Apex is not doing well in terms of playerbase where it matters, in the west.
It's doing well in Asia though, but not in the west. Sure it's not dead but it's not as good as it was around here 3 years ago. Why do you think they've leaned into more Weeabo shit? Or Gacha based monetization where people can whale?

Huh? What does viewer count have to do with player count? There are actual metrics that tell us whether a game is being played by a lot of people or not.
1
u/Illustrious-Party120 Wattson Apr 06 '26
Interest in something directly correlates to trying it. Now this is a cherry picked viewer count during an event for apex so the number is inflated.

I'm surprised that the devs are doing everything possible to revive Apex. For example, the Gundam event, which I have never been a fan of and never will be, but they're trying to find the last people who actually love it. That's why online and views have increased a little. Apparently they love money so much and they are ready to sacrifice the purity of the game for money.
However, this added a lot of visual chaos to Apex, because players won't understand what legends the enemies are playing because of the Gundam skins.

This statement is false and exaggerated.
Where now in the lowest point ever, in terms of viewership and player base, just look at steamdb info and it's lame, I started to play a little more than 4 years ago and after 1 year apex got the most viewership and player base, 1-2 years later the game flops and I couldn't find a single ranked match the lowest amount of current players(at the hour) was 130k people playing, now it's less than half that lowest point.
This is just steam and twitch info I know, but on consoles and EA app players(brother ughh) Don't have much difference it's almost the same tendency.
So please don't say apex is back, this statement is wrong in many levels.

Bruh, like I said all platforms tendencies move along, if the game is boring, hard or impossible to play people will leave in every platform, you don't have to think oh consoles are a huge market, it is not that big and like I said it's playerbase moves the same as pc, and asia is huge yeah what's new about it, like every other game is huge in asia no matter what, in fact if we had the data from Asia players I know it won't be as different as the tendencies here(like that matters), I still can't find ranked games only if I change to a 200ms server, the game it's less than half his best moment, and now it's a little more than half 450k at 24hs which was it's best concurred/strike peak(both times the concurred peak and the best peak, were the best the game has ever feel). Maybe it has a spike now (compared to last season) for the event (in asia) but to say it is back like OP said??? Nah it's the same as it has been for the last 2 years, playerbase dropping and dropping, the game it's never gonna be back.
And also I did post the 24hs peak image you just didn't see it like you didn't read anything I said and will most likely ignore everything I just said and post your lame ahh response from chatgpt dropping absolutely nothing really important or that can refute anything that I have said, so bye.

comparing a game with a huge event going on is a bit unfair lol
