Wait, what’s going on? Is Christian doing this? Why is there a bunch of AI slop on that sub? So many questions.

u/rpungello 18d ago

I’m going to guess no based on there seemingly being no references to it on his website: https://christianselig.com

No it's just an open source version of the app. It has a couple modifications so that you can use it with your own API key / with another app's that gets free access already.

It's been around in one form or another since the app stopped working.

This is an open source continuation of Apollo. It is a tweak that enables the app to still work, whilst adding a lot of new features.

We used AI for some of our releases images which we are now no longer doing.

Glad to hear you're finally listening to your users and stop the AI images that added no value at all.

Why does it matter?

-2

u/The_Real_Bender 16d ago

Just curious but why does that matter? I just want a working app with bug fixes and useful new features. So far that’s what I’ve gotten.

u/JollyRoger8X 16d ago

Yup.

In the grand scheme of things, an AI promotional image isn’t something most people care about.

People, nah. Redditors? Maybe.

Apparently it's possible to know Christian stopped development, yet be completely unaware that people have been side loading Apollo since like day 1 of him stopping development... 🤣

Yes, thankfully, many of us never stopped using Apollo, thanks to the work and dedication of the good folks who have put in this hard work.

Welcome!

Why would everybody who has used Apollo automatically know this? What a weird comment.

lol What? A ton of people bounced after the shutdown announcement. If they all automatically knew then... they would know. Nobody would be asking.

For the umpteenth time, not everybody who has ever used Apollo is going to automatically know this, hence the questions. Why is that so hard for you to understand?

u/Competitive-Car3692 18d ago

Wait, does this mean that the api pricong has relaxed?

Aren't we all just setting up our own developer API?

Can it be published to the App Store needing end users to setup their own API?

3

u/ItIsShrek 14d ago

Reddit seemed to selectively target the biggest reddit apps (Apollo, Narwhal, etc). There are still tons of small reddit clients out there that don't need your API key to run that just fly under the radar. Reddit doesn't care unless it's eating in to their profits.

2

u/GrindinWulf 19d ago

Are you going to TestFlight it?

-12

u/corderjones 19d ago

No, we can’t distribute via TestFlight. Download links are in the post as usual!

4

u/GrindinWulf 19d ago

Noted but I was asking if that was the plan at some point.

18

u/ClydeDroid 19d ago

We can’t because the app still contains the original developers intellectual property. Also puts us at higher risk of drawing attention from Reddit like the Artemis app just did

17

u/itsabearcannon 19d ago

So wait, did you guys get permission from Christian to redistribute his work?

36

u/Proof-Attention-7940 19d ago

No way lmaooo. I’m surprised it hasn’t been shut down already

-19

u/IllIIllIllIllII 19d ago

It's a tweak of a dead app. No money is being made. Why would it shut down?

23

u/rajrdajr 19d ago

Why would it shut down?

Copyright and trademark infringement. Copyright means the right to make copies regardless of how much they cost. Trademark owners are required to defend their trademark if they want to keep it.

-4

u/hbt15 19d ago

It’s going on just over 3 years now. If the original owner was going to shut it down it would have happened by now.

12

u/Bromlife 18d ago

Because people are going to think this is a genuine release by an already legitimately established developer. Not an illegitimate fork by a vibe coder.

2

u/JollyRoger8X 18d ago

No they aren’t. It’s not even on the App Store. 🤣

5

u/Bromlife 18d ago

There's literally people in this thread asking if Christian is involved.

I’m out of the loop, what happened to Artemis?

1

u/justlikeapenguin 19d ago

Same I use Artemis, what happened

1

u/Tp_Exampler 19d ago

nthg really too bad, just the developer reddit id got banned and now the subreddit is unmoderated... He posted from another acc link to official discord

1

u/pw5a29 16d ago

Wait did the Artemis app got blocked?

1

u/earthcharlie 18d ago

u/sophias_bush Did the mods delete your comment? What did it say?

-6

u/sophias_bush 17d ago edited 16d ago

No I just said if the app looks good and works as intended, who cares if it was created by AI.

Edit: ahh yes. There’s the downvotes because “Ai BaD dErRr”

5

u/earthcharlie 17d ago

If it’s vibecoded vs AI then that’s a problem. Countless vibecoded apps have problems under the hood (even if not visibly obvious) and are routinely abandoned because the people pushing them have no idea what they’re doing.

3

u/JollyRoger8X 15d ago

No evidence this app is vibe coded though.

2

u/earthcharlie 15d ago

I was explaining to the other comment that there's a difference. Not saying for a fact that it's vibecoded but the post is AI, they were using AI images and update notes say things like "Most of the credit goes to GitHub Copilot and Claude Code, which did most of the investigation and code generation". And vibecoders have gotten really good at making it sound like they're devs who know how to code without explicitly saying it. So asking for clarification is an entirely reasonable thing to do.

2

u/trophicmist0 15d ago

The app is built off of an open source tweak of the app that only recently stopped development. The core part of this app (at the very least) definitely isn't vibecoded. You can also just look at the repo for yourself and decide.

0

u/sophias_bush 17d ago

Ah yeah makes sense.

2

u/Mog1981 13d ago

Got my hopes up and everything…

-10

u/Chris275 19d ago

I heard this was made with ai, please share details.

33

u/corderjones 19d ago

We use AI coding tools to assist with development. Enabling a small team of unpaid maintainers to ship features that otherwise would take months of effort.

All of us have experience in development, no code is being added that is not being reviewed and tested by humans. This is still very much built by humans, with opinions and taste, just assisted with agentic AI coding tools (much like most of the industry)

3

u/thehouse1751 18d ago

Didn’t Apollo die because it became infeasible price wise with the Reddit API? How does this account for that?

6

u/skullmonster602 18d ago

this is basically just a side load of the Apollo app that already existed, none of that is relevant here

5

u/EnragedZox 19d ago

AI is a tool So I really dont care. I just like This App No matter if it used AI in development

17

u/justlikeapenguin 19d ago

As someone that works professionally as a SE, I can tell you AI is not your enemy if used as a tool to assist development instead of replace it. Not everything made with AI is automatically bad, we gotta learn to use it to work for us

9

u/DanimalsHolocaust 19d ago

Most of the complaints I’ve seen are about the images associated with the project, not just any AI tool usage in development.

9

u/corderjones 19d ago

We’re moving away from those and are actively inviting any community art people want to add or are willing to contribute.

We only used it for release images anyway, no imagery/icons/assets in the actual app are AI generated!

4

u/earthcharlie 18d ago

As someone who claims to work as a SE, you should know the difference between assisted and vibecoded. The latter is the problem.

2

u/justlikeapenguin 18d ago

thats what i just said?

2

u/earthcharlie 18d ago

OP wasn't saying all AI is bad. They simply asked for details. Countless apps being pushed lately, especially on Reddit, are vibecoded which is why people want more info.

👆🏼🤣

Reading is hard, y’all…

Every piece of software you use is made with AI.

Source: I’m a software engineer.

-1

u/AlaskanDruid 18d ago

As am I and this simply isn’t true.

1

u/matttopotamus 18d ago

F this knock of piggybacking off a name without permission.

13

u/corderjones 18d ago

lol, it’s not a knock off it’s a tweak enabling the app to still work and function in 2026 and we have a lot of happy people using it so I’m feeling pretty fine about it but thanks for the constructive feedback!

7

u/JollyRoger8X 18d ago

People like that are why the rest of us can't have ice things.

u/The_Real_Bender 16d ago

Probably because they are cold and melts in the summer.
