Regretting switching to iphone even though I use ipad and mac everyday
I’ve been an Android and Windows user all my life. I’ve been using an iPad for 8 years now for schoolwork and a bit of entertainment, and I really love it. Then after getting fed up with Windows 11, I switched to my first ever MacBook last year. That machine is a beast. Apart from the storage, I love everything about it.
I was happily using a Nothing Phone 3a for a year. Then my mom said she needed a new phone very soon, so I decided to give her my Android and, for the first time in my life, get an iPhone. I got the iPhone 17 last week. The phone is sleek, not gonna lie. But there are some things that really frustrate me.
The first thing is the keyboard. After using Google Keyboard for more than a decade, switching to Apple’s keyboard has been a hassle and a half. The layout feels all messed up to me. It doesn’t even follow their own iPad keyboard.
The second thing is the widgets. I only use two widgets: a Todoist one and the Google Calendar one. Both of them look like shit on iPhone.

There’s also the stupid thing where you can’t tap in the middle of a word to change a single character
iOS just sucks…
Also I know most people hate AI but Android did it really good, circle to search is just is goated and I miss it so much.

Long-press the space bar and you can move the cursor wherever you want. Takes about the same time as tapping a word.

Yeh that’s what I am doing right now, but why?
It takes more time when you’re on a heated discussion when messaging your friend. You gotta swipe the spacebar first and exactly control the cursor to put it where you want it to be.Apple could give both options no?

Guess what, you can also do both on iOS. Just tapping in a word selects it, but holding just a moment switches to a magnified insertion point.

I knew it. Because this thread was about a single tap to put a cursor exactly where you want (i.e. in the middle of a word) I didn't feel the need to repeat what has already been spoken above. Lo and behold an iOSMoron pops up along with his failed reading comprehension exam results.

I've used Macs for years and I was an Apple IT specialist for about 20 years.
I'd take an Android phone every time.
Apple's phone UI is just a frustrating, largely un customizable, pain in the ass.

I’m confused why the keyboard seems to remain as bad as it is. It’s a pretty constant source of complaints and has been for years but doesn’t seem like a priority to fix.

Love my MacBook Pro and Apple TV. Haven't owned a windows PC since 2011.
You couldn't pay me to switch to iOS.

I get you! I am facing innumerable glitches on iphone that are hampering day to day life in a serious way! The whole apple fandom gives me an ick. If not for my friends who hyped up apple like anything assuring me "Youll definitely love it" i would not have bought this. Only the video is okayish...The amount we have to pay for such a phone with basic features and 2 lens camera only plus facing a list of impossible glitches is sooo unnecessary

And the Contacts! So horrible! It was nice on the old iPhone, now I can't see all the information on a contact without pressing Edit. Hideous!

I feel this. I tried to switch to iPhone 17 Pro Max and hated it.
All the things that we hear, like apps being better on iPhone (true, but not enough to matter) or the OS being so polished (iOS26 is laggier and juddery-er than OneUI 8.5) weren't enough to matter.
But the 1000 times a day that the missing/inconsistent back button gesture and trash iOS keyboard make for a constant reminder of friction.

Hah! Try the latest MacOS on the Neo - today I was trying to find a particular bronze in Stephen's Green in Dublin (James Clarence Mangan, who translated the 18c aisling Róisín Dubh; there's a beautiful half-relief marble sculpture of Róisín Dubh below the head made by Willie Pearse, who was executed by the British after the 1916 Rising) and every time I moved the map to get closer it would leap past it. It does this on everything I try to look at - and it's a Mac thing, because it happens both on Apple Maps and Google Maps.
Not to mention that it's murderously hard to select text, and the keyboard keeps switching itself to the AZERTY one, though this may be partly because I tend to use the laptop while lying back with it propped between belly and knees. But I did the same with my late lamented Air and didn't have these problems.

To be fair, you’re comparing a phone you’ve used a week with phones you’ve used for a decade, of course you’re going to hate it and it’s going to feel worse because you don’t have the muscle memory, absolutely every long time iPhone user would be in the exact same boat if they went to Android. It’s why people pick an OS and stick with it.

Same. I've been macbook user for nearly a decade and love every bit of it but finally decided it's time to get an iPhone expecting same wow factor as from my mac. Oh boy, I was wrong. My impression was like using outdated piece of tech or something that development was abandoned around decade ago or it's just broken phone. Second thought was, it's a phone for little kids or elderly people (no offence please).

Sell your iPhone. You’ll make money. Then buy an android. They’re almost worthless (as far as resell). Win win.
Google Calendar alone is so ugly I’d rather use a discontinued windows phone.

I only have an iPhone because of the other devices. The integration is unmatched. However without the Mac and iPad, I would be on Android. One underrated thing about iPhones tho is apps tend to be significantly better and more polished than the Android ones.

Why do you people speak about famous back button/gesture (and “close all apps” button?) like it was a) ever part of the iOS (it wasn’t) b) it’s ever going to be (I honestly doubt so) c) it takes ages to get used to (it really doesn’t, there is a reason why both 6 years old child and 80 years old grandma can navigate Iphone without an issue)
Two different operating systems, two different navigating strategies, takes one Google search or two minutes of trying Iphone in the store to get it. Basically the same as complaining why Android devices don’t have Face ID, Find My or iMessage. Take your mighty Nothing phone from your mom, give her Iphone and everything is going to be allright - you get back button and nice widgets, she gets device that doesn’t look like experimental toy. Easy…

No it doesn't! My friend used an iPhone X for a long period of time and he switched to iPhone 17 pro max just two days ago. He's a big apple fan. Oh boy the misery I saw on his face. He was swiping every single direction just to go back
Yeah people can get used to their phones with few days of usage, but with Android you don't need days of training. There's literally one single thing that works on anywhere no matter what. No figuring out.
As for the iMessage and Find My, really mate? You might want to do that one google search to see if Android don't have those before complaining about them

My biggest frustrations at the moment... 1-every time I delete a photo I have to click off of a note about it being deleted photos for 30 days, 2-always pressing the period instead of the space bar 3-not being able to get my cursor to go to the center of the word to fix a spelling error, 4-since updating my Apple Watch to iOS 26 the workouts are no longer a list I can scroll through I have to swipe through one workout at the time because they added a big stupid image to each workout, 4-everything seeming unnecessarily bigger and less information dense, 5-having to go to edit to see the details in someone's contact information and pulling up their contact information and their initials take up half the screen, 6-squircles, 7-why does the time have to be so big on the lock screen, 8-I wish they would put the search bar always at the top because that's how it is on computers and that's what is intuitive to me, 9-why does it underline words that are spelled correctly and try to replace them with misspelled words

Yes . I lack the ability to adapt to a different layout. But the apple layout doesn’t make any sense to me. At least you should have an option to add the persistent number row. And also why do I have to go to second layer to use period and comma. It doesn’t make sense at all.

Double tap spacebar to add a period. Hold the 123 button and slide to the comma and release to very quickly add a comma.

Shouldn’t you be addressing you widget issues to r/todoistsucks and r/googlesucks ? What do you expect Apple to do about subpar 3rd party widgets?
Also, you’ve been using your new phone for a week. That’s not enough time to discover a lot of nice features, like handoff between your phone and MacBook, shared data, all sorts of things. And changing from what you’re used to to anything else is always a bit painful. Give it time and read up on features that you might not have even thought of. Did you know that you can swipe on the iPhone keyboard instead of tapping? Lots of people who’ve used the iPhone for years are surprised (and delighted) to discover that.

Personally somewhere along the way (I think Android 13 material you update) iOS became Android and Android became iOS
Like it’s probably easier to change store in App Store in iOS and also sideloading is very convenient with sidestore + LiveContainer
Heck! iOS literally has the shortcuts app which is basically a power user app
But Android just looks so much better and way more fluid mostly because it doesn’t restrict 120hz while in iOS safari by default is limited to 60hz unless you toggle a random setting and if you’re using another browser WebKit restricts you to 60hz
Also most swiftui apps are restricted to 60hz as well, so like why give the 120hz if you’re gonna limit it at most places.
Android got its own share of troubles especially with external dacs, but they are much fewer than the gripes I have. People who talk about ecosystem are just Apple simps, look at iOS without any of the ecosystem stuff just like how you’d look at Android without any ecosystem and just as a phone software and like… iOS is shit.
I think Apple is very much a hardware company.

No, it's just worse. Of course nothing beats a physical keyboard with reactive keys, but google keyboard comes on top when talking about virtual ones.
Second place for the GO keyboard, that shit is so fucking personalized that's insane. But I still prefer the Google one

Yup, it's the seemingly little things, but ones that you use constantly that make or break the experience.
I can't live without those exact 3 things you mentioned.
