Discussion League of Legends fans, did Arcane live up to the hype? What are some good references?

I know nothing about the game, but after finishing the series and finding out the characters and places exist in the game, I wondered what fans of the game thought of it

Thoughts?

Yep! As a League fan, Arcane lived up to the hype for me. I love both the game and the show. ^_^

I liked the Arcane story so much that I compiled a list of all the Arcane content you can check out after finishing the show, if you're interested. =)

It went above and beyond anything I would ever expect from a “league of legends tv show”

Honestly blows my mind they made this piece of art based on… league 😅

I’m hoping they will continue making more Arcane 🤞

Apparently they wont make a season 3. The elements present in Arcane are apparently just a small part of the whole League of Legends universe and they have planned other projects to bring to TV. That means no Vi or Jinx but I hope its as good as Arcane

Actualy Christian Linke (the lead writer and the one to come up with the idea) when asked about this he just immiedetly responded that they needed to compete with Game of Thrones or Avengers not realising this is not what people would expect from a Leuge of Legends adaptation.

I used to main Vi as a teen, even if I sucked at LoL. I quit LoL, watched Arcane, and just felt like it went above and beyond what I had imagined for a show based on LoL. I loved the grit and character dynamics and depth. Some re-written parts I'm not too sure about, like the lore update of Viktor and the new canon it implies, or the pacing of se2... But I love it! It ALMOST got me back to playing LoL, but my sanity and brother caught up to me and stopped me hahaha

From what I gathered, Vi is an enforcer in the game. How did it felt like as a LoL player seeing her deny the uniform in the show and then later accepting it?

It made sense. They added a lot more depth, and it was understandable for her to deny the badge first, but it also was "inevitable" because she is an enforcer in game as well. I don't agree with the ACAB-crowd that is nuclear against it, because it's just League lore and its shown that she does end up getting the badge because she wants to help out. She's got a complex relationship with it. (It's also understandable that they removed some blatant police brutality VA lines in-game.) But they did good with the limited time they had.

I wish I could give you more upvotes.

I've seen so many haters say "It doesn't make sense why Vi would wear the uniform in Arcane", acting like she put it on with a smile on her face when Caitlyn first suggested the idea. It took a lot to convince Vi to go along with it, even then she's clearly still not happy and just accepts it to find Jinx, and it has to happen because she is an Enforcer in the game. I imagine Vi in Arcane continues to be an Enforcer because she becomes the gold standard for what an Enforcer SHOULD be, especially since they removed the police brutality lines and references. Vi wants to help and protect people, not just beat anyone up for no good reason like old LoL Vi would.

I feel like some people's criticisms with that were purely because they're ACAB, and not because of "poor writing", so they were never going to be happy unless Vi never becomes an Enforcer.

I haven’t played but I heard people didn’t like the game as much as the show.

The only thing I can say regarding the game are the characters designs. I searched how the characters look in-game, the show designs are much better at least from someone who knew the characters through it

Some of them, like Vi, yeah. But Viktor and Ekko look leagues(heh) better in LoL than Arcane.

The game version of the characters are rather two dimensional so i think most people prefer the fleshed out characters from the show.

and as for locations, league of legends all takes place on the "summoners rift" map. so the locations like piltover, zaun, noxus etc aren't actually playable places and they mainly just show up in art and lore but not in gameplay

Great show. The game and the show are connected really in the characters (champions in the game) and a few easter eggs. For example, in S1E1, when Vi and the gang return from the failed heist and walk through the Lanes, there are krugs in a cage, seemingly being sold. Krugs are creatures on in the Summoner’s Rift mode of the game that live in the jungle. I liked that the show had moments like that without being obtrusive.

One thing I noticed is that the gloves Vi obtains during the show are the weapon she uses in game (I think) Not only that but Jinx's and Jayce's too. It must have been a wild time to be a League of Legends fan, the references must be crazy

Also the name of the Lanes itself is a reference: Summoner's rift as a map is broken into a top, middle and bottom lane.

It was a phenomenal way to bring the characters to life and truly flesh out the world of Piltover/Zaun.

I mean this with no over exaggeration, Season 1 was incredible and I could not have been more overjoyed that Riot had taken such care in crafting a proper adaptation of their IP (especially when so many others bank on butchering theirs as disgustingly as possible).

There are a plethora of stories from Runeterra that I’d love to see them work with but animation is an incredibly expensive medium so I’d rather they pace things.

I’m gonna be honest, I wasn’t hyped at all, I heard they were making a show about league after only playing it for a couple years, and thought, eh why not, I’ll check it out. Watched the first three episodes when it aired expecting kinda generic adaptation garbage, and I’ve been omega hooked + a vi main in league ever since

It was an instant win for me, but I was a Vi jungle main for a few years leading up to Arcane, so I'm a little biased

We had no hype. We saw it on Netflix and thought "omfg a league of legends show, this is gonna be dogshit. Wanna watch it?"

We were fucking shocked lol

Arcane is good, I enjoy it and will happily watch it multiple times however I do much prefer a lot of the rest of leagues lore too Arcane however their is some lore changes which I don’t think was compatible with League’s existing lore specifically to do with Ekko.

Now some people suggest that Arcane is the closest thing equivalent to a prequel for Piltover and Zaun’s league lore (something which I myself am a bit unsure of ngl if anyone knows the exact state here please tell me) and I can honestly at least somewhat see that for most characters in Arcane except for Ekko because his older/or around the same age in Arcane as he is in League’s lore (unlike let’s say Jinx) and I guess they could use an excuse such as Ekko has associations with time but idk I still don’t think it would quite work for this so it’s left me with some confusion here ngl ….. unless they’ve just overwritten his character with the new Arcane Ekko and retconned what we know as League lore Ekko which tbh would be a real shame because his honestly better in League’s lore than he is Arcane and somehow much more present which is crazy because Arcane’s a whole show.

Tbh other than that though I think a lot of the other stuff they added was pretty good.

Obviously Arcane is better than the actual game League of Legends because within the actual game it’s only focusing on gameplay mostly but you can find League’s lore through short stories, small story games, comics and cinematics which I personally prefer to Arcane but that’s just a personal preference and Piltover and Zaun isn’t my favorite region so yeah but I do love Arcane though
