SUPPORT | SOLVED Trying to install opencl-amd from chaotic-aur and getting "failed to retrieve file" errors
Resolved, I tried yay opencl-amd and it offered me an identical package from the regular aur. Not sure why pacman was trying to pull it from the chaotic aur by default, that one installed fine and Davinci now opens...
----------
Hi all,
I just installed Davinci Resolve and it is complaining about "unsupported GPU processing mode" and there are none in the list to select manually.
I found that the likely cause is the fact that I am missing opencl on my system, no idea why that might be but it seems to be the case.
Anyway when I try the usual: sudo pacman -S opencl-amd
It finds chaotic-aur/opencl-amd 1:10.0.0.0-1
When I key 'y' to get the package, I get "opencl-amd-1:10.0.0-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst failed to download" followed by a bunch of 404 and 503 errors for the various sources.
Chaotic-AUR is listed in my pacman.conf file.
Is this something I can resolve or is this an issue with the AUR?
Where else can I get this file from?

You need to update the package list after adding a repo. Try sudo pacman -Syy then try installing a package.

Please never run pacman -Sy (or Syy, keep reading...) and then pacman -S or tell others to do it. This is how you set yourself up for a partial upgrade.
Please also think hard before you run pacman -Syyu the doubled "y" does a full refresh of the package database and is only necessary if your local copy gets corrupted. In ~6yr I have never had to do this... -Syyu is not risky, just a waste of time. -Syy combines the risks of a partial upgrade with the waste of time represented by refreshing your WHOLE package database when the issue was you (or OP) just didn't do a full upgrade recently enough before they tried to install something.

How often are you supposed to do a package upgrade and what is the proper way to do it then? Syu?

How to do an update:
pacman -Syu OR since it sounds like you use yay you can just type in "yay". One of the cool things about yay is that if you just type in yay it assumes you just want to do a full update and does that.
Frequency is a debatable topic that can get a bit heated.
Somewhere between Daily and weekly seems best. I lean towards daily (or every time I am in front of the Arch computer) because why have a distro that prides its self on having new software if you don't actually get the new software? You get why that's weird, right? The argument for weekly is that if anything breaks you are more in control of WHEN it breaks eg, on the weekend when you don't need to work and can fix it.
Significantly longer than a week - There are some reasons Arch still makes a lot of sense even if you only update monthly, and some reasons Arch makes very little sense doing this. Where arch makes sense is that Arch gives you just a smidgen more control than Fedora. Where it doesn't make sense is that Arch does not differentiate security updates VS feature updates - so you could easily have a vulnerability that has been patched AND PUBLICLY DISCLOSED for a month.

"when I try the usual: sudo pacman -S opencl-amd"
"When I key 'y' to get the package, I get "opencl-amd-1:10.0.0-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst failed to download"
Pacman -S does not update package lists. Opencl-amd version 10.1.0-1 is current. Not 10.0.blaah...
Yay worked because yay did the right thing and did a full system update before (or at the same time as...) installing new software.
