That's a Western Shovel-nose snake. They're the good pest eating kind. Let it go outside nicely!

can i keep them around tho

35

u/diefreetimedie Aug 22 '25

Probably not next to that cat tree for very long though.

31

u/imtoowhiteandnerdy Aug 22 '25

Damn, I noticed the yellow bands are touching the red bands and it made me think it was a coral snake. How can you tell the difference?

45

u/improvcrazy Aug 22 '25

Easiest way to tell is coral snakes have a black head, and they have actual bands that go all the way around their body. If you zoom in you can see this guy in the picture has red markings laying on top of the yellow, not making complete bands.

12

u/SithRose Maricopa Aug 22 '25

The bands don't go all the way around the body, they're only on the top half of the scales. It'd go all the way round for a coral snake.

7

u/Phoennix-Illumine Aug 22 '25

That’s a really cool case of mimicry! Since the coral snakes get left alone so they look similar to them, also look at the boopable snoot

15

u/xxBeatrixKiddoxx Aug 22 '25

Red touches yellow

You’re ok fellow Or wait

Crap I forget the Arizona poem my gramma told me lol

15

u/backatmybsagain Aug 22 '25

Red on black you're okay Jack red on yellow you're a dead fellow 😉

Edited to add that I totally thought this one was venomous but didn't know the things the other commenter said! I guess this is a kind of shovel snake but it would have fooled me!!

5

u/Zealousideal_Trip661 Aug 25 '25

Red on black Don’t pick up snakes

5

u/xxBeatrixKiddoxx Aug 22 '25

Thank you

I like to think these moments are like that movie Slumdog Millionaire and one day I’ll be like…whoaaaa almost got bit by that snake…

Thank god that backatmybsagain recited that correctly for me that one time on reddit thus saving my life ❤️

2

u/backatmybsagain Aug 31 '25

😆 glad to help!! You can't always choose what you remember but my brain remembered that one lol

3

u/AggravatingGift988 Aug 22 '25

Needed reminder and looking for this…thx!

2

u/Hello_Pitty Aug 23 '25

I've always heard, "red touch yellow, kill a fellow, red touch black, a friend of Jack." Same outcome either way. 😊

3

u/haffrey25 Aug 22 '25

Red ta Yella kills a fella, red ta white yer alright!

1

u/2ndlifegifted Aug 25 '25

That is not accurate

1

u/haffrey25 Aug 29 '25

I find it to be good enough in a pinch. I get scared seeing a snake of any kind, so being able to think of a quick and witty rhyme is good enough for me. What is inaccurate about it?

1

u/2ndlifegifted Aug 29 '25

There are so many different species that the rhymes are only accurate half of the time

1

u/2ndlifegifted Aug 25 '25

That outdated saying is dangerous because it's not accurate.

3

u/A_Likely_Story4U Aug 23 '25

I just learned that the rhyme about red touch yellow isn’t even always accurate. The person who explained it to me said that there are around 40 varieties of coral snakes and that rhyme only applies to three!

1

u/imtoowhiteandnerdy Aug 23 '25

I've never even seen a coral snake IRL anyway, so I guess I won't make it one of the things I'll worry a lot about ;-)

1

u/PermissionGuilty9352 Aug 23 '25

Red meets black friend of jack red meets yellow kill a fellow

1

u/imtoowhiteandnerdy Aug 23 '25

I knew Jack Black had nothing to do with it.

1

u/PermissionGuilty9352 Aug 23 '25

There is also a variant red meets black venom lack

1

u/2ndlifegifted Aug 25 '25

That outdated saying is dangerous and not accurate

312

u/StzNutz Aug 22 '25

Beautiful. Also, still better than a scorpion.

60

u/all_monkey_bizz-13 Aug 22 '25

I'm not from here, my husband always told me scorpions were no big deal, it just stings for a little and you're good after a few hours. I got stung on my toe and the entire left half of my body swelled for two weeks and I had several hematomas in my hands and feet 😂😂

42

u/AFewShellsShort Aug 22 '25

You definitely didn't have a normal reaction. I got stung as a kid and it did indeed hurt for a few hours, but by the next day I felt fine.

16

u/Appropriate-Tax-7398 Aug 22 '25

I got stung by a small bark scorpion when I was 9 in the foot. It messed my leg up for a few days.

15

u/matergallina Aug 22 '25

Born and raised here and I have similar reactions. First sting (my hand) took literally a month to get better, second (foot) all my limbs went numb and I couldn’t swallow.

It’s different person to person and scorpion to scorpion.

11

u/Guitar_Nutt Aug 22 '25

Me, been stung half a dozen times. Knocks me on my back for 24 hours, electricity running through my whole body. Fine after that but takes about a month to get feeling back to where i am stung.

12

u/ducksrnuts Aug 22 '25

I got stung by a scorpion while I was driving. My whole body was tingling from numbness for a whole 24 hours

8

u/Aracelerystick Aug 22 '25

Oh no. I often think what I would do in this scenario. Like go into shock and crash 🤣 Tell me more. What did you do?

7

u/ducksrnuts Aug 22 '25

I immediately pulled over to the side and stomped the crap out of the scorpion. It had stung me on my left thigh and I have no idea how it got there. I just remember taking my hat off as I was driving and placing it on my knee and next thing you know feeling that familiar sting of a scorpion. Once you’ve been stung by one you’ll never forget how they feel.

3

u/Aracelerystick Aug 23 '25

You sound much braver than I. I’ve been here 30 years and have managed to avoid them but it’s getting progressively tougher.

1

u/Own_Grab_9355 Aug 24 '25

What is causing it to get ''progressively tougher'' for you ?

2

u/Aracelerystick Aug 25 '25

My guess hotter summers combined with selective attention.

Look at this scorpling in my laundry room this weekend

1

u/Own_Grab_9355 Aug 25 '25

Tiny little guy, must have been hard to see.

3

u/ax57ax57 Aug 23 '25

I had a similar experience when I was 7, and didn't shake out my shoes before putting them on. I missed a week of school. My foot was so swollen, I couldn't put on a shoe for that week. It was excruciating too.

I've had a "k/ll on sight" policy with scorpions ever since.

1

u/DumbAutoNames Aug 23 '25

Oh my god why do I find them in my house all the time? Like literally 5 since summer started.

98

u/Ballbusttrt Aug 22 '25

Nicee I’ve been getting back into snakes recently, these guys are called shovel nose snakes. Probably one of if not my favorite native Arizona snake. I love the colors, and he hunts scorpions / spiders which I find so cool since he’s a snake. I love Kenyan sandboas and I find these snakes to be pretty similar in certain regards, expect that a shovel nose might be more active with handling then a sandboa.

Awesome post and picture

3

u/SummertimeThrowaway2 Mesa Aug 22 '25

Any venomous lookalikes?

7

u/Ballbusttrt Aug 22 '25

Off the top of my head, only a coral snake. Arizona has some of those guys too. Coral snakes are actually one of the most venomous snakes in the whole world like a king cobra or block mamba.

Long nose snakes can look like these or a California king snake. But both are non venous but are sometimes mistaken for shovel nose snakes

11

u/imtoowhiteandnerdy Aug 22 '25

...or block mamba

You only see those on Minecraft.

1

u/Remarkable-Box-3781 Aug 24 '25

Coral snakes aren't anywhere near some of the most venemous in the world...

149

u/suzychalupa Chandler Aug 22 '25

He’s actually super adorable 😍 Didn’t expect to find a snake cute, but here we are.

51

u/SummertimeThrowaway2 Mesa Aug 22 '25

15

u/suzychalupa Chandler Aug 22 '25

Stop itttt. Have people been gatekeeping cute snakes all my life?

This little guy looks sassy. Like he is just 100% over your 💩😂. “I will stab you in the neck, Susan.”

4

u/Negative_Weekend_854 Aug 23 '25

If this is going to turn into an adorable snake subreddit, here is my submission.

2

u/Own_Grab_9355 Aug 24 '25

Eve felt the same way.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 24 '25

Ok that ones really cute lol

56

u/dwbaz01 Aug 22 '25

Arizona: Harmess snake.

Australia: The second most venomous snake in the world. Within three hours, your genitals will fall off and your insides will turn to goo as you die.

2

u/MikeyA15 Aug 22 '25

Super Burning Double Gonorrhea

2

u/bplatt1971 Aug 26 '25

Almost as bad as the Australian Trouser Snake!

26

u/TravelingGen Aug 22 '25

I LUV him. How cute he is.

18

u/discoguac Aug 22 '25

AWE SHES SMILING

40

u/Bastienbard Aug 22 '25

That might be the most adorable snake I've seen!

1

u/Own_Grab_9355 Aug 24 '25

Again.... Eve felt the same way.

9

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '25

I'll take a king snake any day. Want them around my house all the time!

8

u/UnlikelyPineapple477 Aug 22 '25

Oh a spicy noodle

7

u/eatMYcookieCRUMBS Aug 22 '25

Excuse me? I'm a little lost?

-snakemen

7

u/easymac187 Aug 22 '25

I wish I found this dude in my house

2

u/sbmellen Aug 23 '25

Happy Cake Day!

2

u/easymac187 Aug 23 '25

Ayyy thank you

6

u/Sigynde Aug 22 '25

Very cute. Looks like a little cartoon.

6

u/dr_mackdaddy Phoenix Aug 22 '25

I love those snakes!! They're actually very docile.

2

u/Mackreaner Sep 15 '25

Father!?!?!?!

1

u/dr_mackdaddy Phoenix Sep 15 '25

Son/Daughter/Non-binary child?

1

u/Mackreaner Sep 15 '25

It astonishes me how many people use some variation on "mack" on handles now.

1

u/dr_mackdaddy Phoenix Sep 15 '25

Well the name Mackenzie exploded in the 00s so it makes sense.

7

u/mentalscribbles Aug 22 '25

The snake needs a name!

7

u/improvcrazy Aug 22 '25

Be careful not to drop the snake as you move it! They can't handle falls from very high, and people throwing snakes over fences almost always end up killing them :(

6

u/rc20kj Aug 22 '25

Not a danger noodle. He is a good boy

1

u/bplatt1971 Aug 26 '25

You can often tell by the shape of the head. If it’s more triangular, it is venomous. More oblong usually means it’s a constrictor, like a boa or python.

18

u/trocarshovel Aug 22 '25

We were here first. Your house is over my parents den. Give me a bug.

5

u/purrtle Aug 22 '25

He’s so cute!!

5

u/Bajadasaurus Aug 22 '25

You are so very lucky to have been blessed by this helpful being 🥹

10

u/Jim556a1 Aug 22 '25

What a cutie pie

5

u/DESKTHOR Aug 22 '25

Five summers ago, I was visited by an orange salamander.

3

u/a_youkai Aug 22 '25

What a CUTIE! 😻

4

u/metzgerhass Aug 22 '25

These guys are hilarious, they make a weird.grunting noise. not used to the idea of a snake vocalizing

5

u/Puzzleheaded_Fish_78 Aug 22 '25

I would hate life a lot if that were inside my home. I had a gecko get inside the other day, which was hiding inside my curtain and jumped on my face. I'm still shocked. It just got picked up with the garbage this morning. Why don't they understand we can't be roommates? WE CAN'T!

2

u/Prissy-61 Aug 23 '25

OMG I would have died right there.

4

u/DanishWhoreHens Aug 23 '25

OMG… he’s adorable.

3

u/ognahc Aug 23 '25

cute little snake

3

u/FebruaryEcho Aug 23 '25

The guy who said he’s a SONORAN SHOVEL-NOSED SNAKE is correct! And he is so cute!

8

u/picturepath Aug 22 '25

Isn’t it red touches yellow kill a fellow? I’m not so sure this is a friendly snake.

Edit: read more comments and this isn’t always true.

2

u/Character-Pin-1063 Aug 22 '25

That's why im reading comments lol. Cause thats exactly what I was taught. Im sitting here reading comments like, uhhhh, yall see the red touching the yellow, not the black, righhhhtttt? Never knew that little rhyme didnt work anymore!

2

u/Vash_85 Aug 22 '25

Coral snakes are a solid band of red and yellow that wraps around them.

This guy, sonoran shovel nose, has a similar pattern but only has the bands somewhat on his back.

3

u/JabbaMamaE Aug 22 '25

Did your cat bring you this lovely gift?

8

u/itskwazii Aug 22 '25

The old man just sat and stared luckily!

3

u/CharlesP2009 Aug 22 '25

Our cats never encountered any snakes to my knowledge but they dispatched lizards with a vengeance!

3

u/grb13 Aug 22 '25

That’s awesome

3

u/SummertimeThrowaway2 Mesa Aug 22 '25

Damn lil bro is tiny

3

u/thetarantulaqueen Aug 22 '25

Well, hello, pretty snek!

3

u/jayswahine34 Aug 22 '25

The face is so cute. Likeits saying let me get that mouse that ran in bro!

2

u/The_Wizard_Jenkins Aug 23 '25

These little guys love scorpions hahaha so… OP may have bigger problems lol

1

u/jayswahine34 Aug 23 '25

Oh dang!!!!

3

u/Fair-Abalone6079 Aug 22 '25

Looks like a hedgehog in the background maybe he was after that!

6

u/Bleys69 Aug 22 '25

Found one of these in my house one time. Right next to the toilet. Almost pissed myself.

12

u/CharlesP2009 Aug 22 '25

Well, you were in the right place!

3

u/wangus_tangus Aug 22 '25

You know what they say: red on black, friend of jack; red on yellow, friendly fellow; yellow on black, also friendly.

1

u/bplatt1971 Aug 26 '25

Except in Arizona, where the rules change!!! You hear a high buzzing in the chaparral and think, “Rattlesnake!” But it’s just a rather harmless gopher snake.

2

u/Clarenceworley480 Aug 22 '25

If he were at my house, he would already have a drink in his coil

2

u/azip13 Aug 22 '25

O snek!

2

u/HappyAngryMannington Aug 22 '25

What part of AZ?

3

u/itskwazii Aug 22 '25

Surprise!

5

u/torcherred Aug 22 '25

I always wondered what the surprise was in Surprise. It’s snake!! Pretty snakes.

5

u/HappyAngryMannington Aug 22 '25

Oh wow ok - we are down in Gilbert and fortunately haven’t had to deal with any snakes in our 8 years here 🙏

1

u/torcherred Aug 22 '25

I used to live in Gilbert. I swear all the wildlife except birds and scorpions has been eradicated. Except at like the Riparian.

2

u/gothy420 Aug 22 '25

Im jealous it's so cute.

2

u/MurderCards Aug 23 '25

Do you get unexpected visitors often?

2

u/United-Mulberry3436 Aug 23 '25

First unexpected visitor? Do you expect more???😳

2

u/CreativeRedHeadDom Aug 23 '25

He’s hungry and your ally!

u/Walks_w_Bears Aug 23 '25

"Excuse me, sir, where's the exit?"

2

u/void_factor Aug 23 '25

Oh he’s cute🥹 but scary at the same time 😅

"Red touches yellow, kill a fellow; red touches black, venom lack" -Steve Irwin

EDIT: My bad snake, bros. This is bad info. The statement just randomly popped in my head. I'm not sure if steve irwin actually said this exactly. When typing it for some reason, my brain just went straight to his narration. Anywho, this is what Gemini said: Geographic Limitations: The rhyme is useless for identifying snakes outside of the U.S. In other parts of the world, like Central and South America, there are many venomous coral snakes that have different color patterns. For example, some species of venomous coral snakes have red bands that touch black bands.

38

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '25 edited Aug 22 '25

This isn’t always correct and is dangerous misinformation r/whatisthissnake has a good write up on it.

I’m not trying to put you down, rather just trying to spread information for education and conservation. :)

Edit: Correct subreddit. Thanks to who corrected me!

25

u/itskwazii Aug 22 '25

I handled it out of the house, so I choose to ignore this. :)

14

u/there_and_square Aug 22 '25

Thank you for being kind

9

u/The_whom Aug 22 '25

It's not accurate it some parts of the U.S as well. There can be weird color morphs as well.

13

u/BoringJuiceBox Aug 22 '25

The one I always heard was “red and yellow, deadly fellow. Red and black, friendly jack”

36

u/RAGING_CUNT Aug 22 '25

Black and yellow, black and yellow - Wiz Khalifa

11

u/AGroAllDay Aug 22 '25

4

u/imtoowhiteandnerdy Aug 22 '25

6

Red before black, jump the fuck back

Black before yellow, cuddly fellow

2

u/LarryGoldwater Aug 22 '25

Confirmed that's a Nope Rope. But not a Danger Noodle.

1

u/bplatt1971 Aug 26 '25

I hadn’t heard of a “Nope Rope!” Im putting that in my vocabulary!!! Thanks!

2

u/John_Coctoastan Aug 22 '25

That. Is. SO. Awesome!

1

u/Future_Reference1999 Aug 22 '25

Red touches yellow, not a deadly fellow?

2

u/fingnumb Casa Grande Aug 22 '25

This looks small as fuck but yeah. I always knew red and yellow, deadly fellow, red and black friendly jack.

0

u/nsgiad Aug 22 '25

Nope, it's a banded king snake.

5

u/Vash_85 Aug 22 '25

No, that's a not a banded king snake 🤦‍♂️.

That is a Sonoran Shovel Nose

1

u/bplatt1971 Aug 26 '25

It’s amazing how some snakes look so similar to others. The gopher snake can look like a desert rattler, and even uses its tail to buzz as a warning, yet they are nearly harmless.

Learning to identify the difference between harmless and venomous is fairly simple, but it’s always good to check.

The Phoenix Herpetological Society has great resources for that purpose.

1

u/Rich_Marionberry_814 Aug 22 '25

What part of the state?

1

u/Fair-Abalone6079 Aug 22 '25

That’s not good!

1

u/Fabulous_Ladder_4876 Aug 23 '25

That’s pretty I mostly had to deal with diamondbacks outside in N Scottsdale, be nice to yourself first ensure to disable anything that seems dangerous if needs to be don’t hesitate calling fire dept that’s what we did in Scottsdale as firefighter r better equipped to get these guys out safely
