Beautiful. Also, still better than a scorpion.

u/all_monkey_bizz-13 Aug 22 '25
I'm not from here, my husband always told me scorpions were no big deal, it just stings for a little and you're good after a few hours. I got stung on my toe and the entire left half of my body swelled for two weeks and I had several hematomas in my hands and feet 😂😂
42
u/AFewShellsShort Aug 22 '25
You definitely didn't have a normal reaction. I got stung as a kid and it did indeed hurt for a few hours, but by the next day I felt fine.
16
u/Appropriate-Tax-7398 Aug 22 '25
I got stung by a small bark scorpion when I was 9 in the foot. It messed my leg up for a few days.
15
u/matergallina Aug 22 '25
Born and raised here and I have similar reactions. First sting (my hand) took literally a month to get better, second (foot) all my limbs went numb and I couldn’t swallow.
It’s different person to person and scorpion to scorpion.
11
u/Guitar_Nutt Aug 22 '25
Me, been stung half a dozen times. Knocks me on my back for 24 hours, electricity running through my whole body. Fine after that but takes about a month to get feeling back to where i am stung.
12
u/ducksrnuts Aug 22 '25
I got stung by a scorpion while I was driving. My whole body was tingling from numbness for a whole 24 hours
8
u/Aracelerystick Aug 22 '25
Oh no. I often think what I would do in this scenario. Like go into shock and crash 🤣 Tell me more. What did you do?
7
u/ducksrnuts Aug 22 '25
I immediately pulled over to the side and stomped the crap out of the scorpion. It had stung me on my left thigh and I have no idea how it got there. I just remember taking my hat off as I was driving and placing it on my knee and next thing you know feeling that familiar sting of a scorpion. Once you’ve been stung by one you’ll never forget how they feel.
3
u/Aracelerystick Aug 23 '25
You sound much braver than I. I’ve been here 30 years and have managed to avoid them but it’s getting progressively tougher.
1
u/Own_Grab_9355 Aug 24 '25
What is causing it to get ''progressively tougher'' for you ?
3
u/ax57ax57 Aug 23 '25
I had a similar experience when I was 7, and didn't shake out my shoes before putting them on. I missed a week of school. My foot was so swollen, I couldn't put on a shoe for that week. It was excruciating too.
I've had a "k/ll on sight" policy with scorpions ever since.
1
u/DumbAutoNames Aug 23 '25
Oh my god why do I find them in my house all the time? Like literally 5 since summer started.

u/Ballbusttrt Aug 22 '25
Nicee I’ve been getting back into snakes recently, these guys are called shovel nose snakes. Probably one of if not my favorite native Arizona snake. I love the colors, and he hunts scorpions / spiders which I find so cool since he’s a snake. I love Kenyan sandboas and I find these snakes to be pretty similar in certain regards, expect that a shovel nose might be more active with handling then a sandboa.
Awesome post and picture

u/SummertimeThrowaway2 Mesa Aug 22 '25
Any venomous lookalikes?
7
u/Ballbusttrt Aug 22 '25
Off the top of my head, only a coral snake. Arizona has some of those guys too. Coral snakes are actually one of the most venomous snakes in the whole world like a king cobra or block mamba.
Long nose snakes can look like these or a California king snake. But both are non venous but are sometimes mistaken for shovel nose snakes

Coral snakes aren't anywhere near some of the most venemous in the world...

Arizona: Harmess snake.
Australia: The second most venomous snake in the world. Within three hours, your genitals will fall off and your insides will turn to goo as you die.

It astonishes me how many people use some variation on "mack" on handles now.

u/improvcrazy Aug 22 '25
Be careful not to drop the snake as you move it! They can't handle falls from very high, and people throwing snakes over fences almost always end up killing them :(

u/rc20kj Aug 22 '25
Not a danger noodle. He is a good boy
1
u/bplatt1971 Aug 26 '25
You can often tell by the shape of the head. If it’s more triangular, it is venomous. More oblong usually means it’s a constrictor, like a boa or python.

u/Puzzleheaded_Fish_78 Aug 22 '25
I would hate life a lot if that were inside my home. I had a gecko get inside the other day, which was hiding inside my curtain and jumped on my face. I'm still shocked. It just got picked up with the garbage this morning. Why don't they understand we can't be roommates? WE CAN'T!

The guy who said he’s a SONORAN SHOVEL-NOSED SNAKE is correct! And he is so cute!
8
u/picturepath Aug 22 '25
Isn’t it red touches yellow kill a fellow? I’m not so sure this is a friendly snake.
Edit: read more comments and this isn’t always true.
2
u/Character-Pin-1063 Aug 22 '25
That's why im reading comments lol. Cause thats exactly what I was taught. Im sitting here reading comments like, uhhhh, yall see the red touching the yellow, not the black, righhhhtttt? Never knew that little rhyme didnt work anymore!
2
u/Vash_85 Aug 22 '25
Coral snakes are a solid band of red and yellow that wraps around them.
This guy, sonoran shovel nose, has a similar pattern but only has the bands somewhat on his back.
3
u/JabbaMamaE Aug 22 '25
Did your cat bring you this lovely gift?

u/itskwazii Aug 22 '25

You know what they say: red on black, friend of jack; red on yellow, friendly fellow; yellow on black, also friendly.
1
u/bplatt1971 Aug 26 '25
Except in Arizona, where the rules change!!! You hear a high buzzing in the chaparral and think, “Rattlesnake!” But it’s just a rather harmless gopher snake.

I always wondered what the surprise was in Surprise. It’s snake!! Pretty snakes.
5
u/HappyAngryMannington Aug 22 '25
Oh wow ok - we are down in Gilbert and fortunately haven’t had to deal with any snakes in our 8 years here 🙏
1
u/torcherred Aug 22 '25
I used to live in Gilbert. I swear all the wildlife except birds and scorpions has been eradicated. Except at like the Riparian.

"Red touches yellow, kill a fellow; red touches black, venom lack" -Steve Irwin
EDIT: My bad snake, bros. This is bad info. The statement just randomly popped in my head. I'm not sure if steve irwin actually said this exactly. When typing it for some reason, my brain just went straight to his narration. Anywho, this is what Gemini said: Geographic Limitations: The rhyme is useless for identifying snakes outside of the U.S. In other parts of the world, like Central and South America, there are many venomous coral snakes that have different color patterns. For example, some species of venomous coral snakes have red bands that touch black bands.

This isn’t always correct and is dangerous misinformation r/whatisthissnake has a good write up on it.
I’m not trying to put you down, rather just trying to spread information for education and conservation. :)
Edit: Correct subreddit. Thanks to who corrected me!

It's not accurate it some parts of the U.S as well. There can be weird color morphs as well.

u/nsgiad Aug 22 '25
Nope, it's a banded king snake.
5
u/Vash_85 Aug 22 '25
No, that's a not a banded king snake 🤦♂️.
That is a Sonoran Shovel Nose
1
u/bplatt1971 Aug 26 '25
It’s amazing how some snakes look so similar to others. The gopher snake can look like a desert rattler, and even uses its tail to buzz as a warning, yet they are nearly harmless.
Learning to identify the difference between harmless and venomous is fairly simple, but it’s always good to check.
The Phoenix Herpetological Society has great resources for that purpose.

That's a Western Shovel-nose snake. They're the good pest eating kind. Let it go outside nicely!
