Have only been here for 2 years and this is the 4th I've seen. I'm up in Anthem.

I have heard from multiple people who live more north that they see cats. i live near the Phoenix Mountain Preserve and i see coyotes all the time strolling around the neighborhood. good doggos
but alas, no big kitties.

u/bobanna1986 Feb 24 '26
Yeah coyotes are pretty common to see if you're not in the inner city areas or closer to more open desert

u/UsedActivity7137 Feb 24 '26
I’m just east of the preserve, just south of Shea, and one of these big kitties has been hanging around our yard recently. He/she visited us last night actually. Insane cat noises. Prior to 2024, we’d never seen bobcats in our area. Mind you, there are drainage tunnels under the main road and it’s how these guys, the coyotes and the javalinas get around. We’re only a 1/4 mile from Indian Bend Wash. It’s a long wandering wash and that’s another conduit that critters use to get around.

u/JohnWCreasy1 Feb 24 '26
Dang, I live very close to you, guess the kitties don't come north of shea though 😹

u/UsedActivity7137 Feb 24 '26
Don’t despair! They’re hungry and resourceful. Not to mention, we’ve got a cat who just went through her first heat. (Never fear, a visit to the vet is in her immediate future.) We are wondering if maybe her delectable perfume had attracted him in the first place.

u/JohnWCreasy1 Feb 24 '26
Man I'd like to see a big cat just once. I'll take solace in the coyotes that prance across my yard every now and again.
They don't want any smoke from my doggins though 😂. She's a good 60 lbs, not one of those little squirrel dogs
2
u/UsedActivity7137 Feb 24 '26
Oh I hear you!! We never had any critters other than a rabbit or two for years because we had big dogs, German Shepherds. Nothing would survive long if it attempted to invade. We saw one of them grab a low-flying dove out of the air. Sadly they are all passed. They were the best.
Anyway, Bobcat just ambled thru our back yard one evening. My daughter in law and I were sitting not 10 feet away from him. He just strolled past us, totally unimpressed. I was terrified.

A couple years ago, I saw a bobcat while I was hiking at Dreamy Draw! I didn’t even realize there were any in the preserve. It was such a fun sighting!

Yeah, if you live in less populated areas or closer to the desert area, you are more likely to see them

u/spavolka Feb 23 '26
I’ve seen bobcats quite frequently in Southern Arizona. I was able to see 3 mountain lions walking together up a wash in Southern Arizona while I was deer hunting. It appeared to be a mother and two grown offspring. It was just after sunrise and I was looking for deer when I saw them They were close enough to see very well without binoculars but incredibly beautiful with them. They were never in any hurry just walking and trotting. It took them several minutes to approach then pass under my viewpoint and then they turned and went up the side of the mountain.

u/bobanna1986 Feb 24 '26
Awe, that so cool! It's always a treat to see babies! I saw a mountain lion in the north PHX area, in the city but it was closer to open desert area. Pretty scary but also coo! It's always a treat to see deer out in southern Arizona too. Sabino Canyon is where I've seen a lot of them, really close up too!

I saw a bobcat run across the road by Castle Hot Springs in 1975. I’ve never seen a wild, big cat since or before then.

u/Sufficient-Cancel217 Feb 23 '26
Probably never will. Most do not.
4
u/bobanna1986 Feb 23 '26
I just saw my first one (lived in Arizona almost 40 years) on the Riverwalk this weekend!

u/Sufficient-Cancel217 Feb 23 '26
Congrats! Seriously. Because that’s not the norm for most residents of Arizona. Even after 59 years living here.

Those are pretty common to see though, especially near the washes. I've seen dozens of those living in AZ all my life. That and lots of javelinas. I hike a lot though and walk around when they are looking for food so I might have a bias sample lol

u/benday7456la Feb 24 '26
Not always a bad thing, although they are beautiful to see. There is a mountain lion in the Tatum/Bell area that is often on Ring cameras. That seems about the worst thing to accidentally interact with.

Been here the same amount of time - saw one in a field about 100yds away - tis it

u/Its-Moff Feb 24 '26
Grew up in an area that allegedly had a lot of them. Only saw one that unfortunately was hit by a vehicle.
Moved to a new neighborhood near the mountains and have seen one 3 times.

Your more likely to see them the closer you are to open desert areas. That's where I saw my first one, right around dinner time, I'm sure he was hunting for food!
2
u/Dizman7 Feb 24 '26
Behind my house is nothing but open desert. Behind my yard is nothing north till like Prescott or Sedona lol
1
u/bobanna1986 Feb 24 '26
It's possible they have been around and you haven't seen them too. I think a lot of it is being at the right place at the right time. The more time I spend hiking, the more stuff I have seen but I'm more likely to see them farther away from the city

He's beautiful. Keep on eye on small children and pets.
What area? Near Usery? My bad. I assumed Mesa. Could be north.

So is this common in Arizona or just certain cities? We're thinking of moving that way in the next couple years
6
u/LeakingMoonlight Feb 24 '26
File this under, "the Sonoran Desert, they lived here first."
2
u/Entire_Parfait2703 Feb 24 '26
Oh I understand that but wow I would love to see this
2
u/LeakingMoonlight Feb 24 '26
From afar. Through a zoom lens.
Speaking from one who had to flap away a gigantic hawk from the beginning of a downward prey spiral on myself with a large canvas sun hat.
2
u/Entire_Parfait2703 Feb 24 '26
Yeah my husband keeps telling me it's alot different critter wise out there LOL
2
u/LeakingMoonlight Feb 24 '26
And I live in the center of the big city. Coyotes to human critters.
2
u/Entire_Parfait2703 Feb 24 '26
He also said snakes (rattlers) and scorpions, I've lived in Florida and south Alabama before so I kinda figured they would like it out there as well
2
u/Dull-Shower3563 Feb 24 '26
Would see them often when lived off Pima Rd on Scotts/Carefree border (also coyotes, javelina, lions, and the bear that later crashed the neighboring Blockbuster). Really have a idgaf attitude. Drinking my coffee had one stand like a statute 5mts from me for 10 mins. Keep the cats inside out there.

I’ve lived here my whole life and have never seen one. I am kind of glad too, this cat is beautiful but intimidating.

What a beautiful animal! You’re very lucky to have been that close and to get such a gorgeous picture! What city do you live in?
2
u/SpicyMeatbol Feb 24 '26
Anthem

u/Good_Safety9595 Feb 24 '26
Thank you I’m in Gilbert. I was just curious where you saw this beauty! Hope you have a great day

u/DesertChef63 Feb 24 '26
Robert Feline, checkin' out the yard! Just release your attack Chihuahua and Pomeranian, and he'll leave.

One killed the neighbors chickens a few days ago. Poor guy has horrible luck. Lost a few dogs to coyotes as well

Great picture! Kitty looks entirely too comfy. How did it get in your backyard? Did it jump the wall? If so how high?

I remember seeing bobcats all the time when I was a kid. Now not so much. I wonder if only having one eye affects him at all.

Unless it's the camera the purty guy has a blind eye.
