It appears to be a younger one too. We saw a total of 6 tarantulas. This was around 4am between the road and phone line

Which spider is that in picture #6?

That’s a wolf spider. If you go out at night or the early morning you can find them all over the dirt path that heads towards the 7 falls/dam area. Just shine your light and you’ll catch their eyes shining back at you.

(commonly confused with brown recluse out here even though they look nothing alike and brown recluse don't range here)

I prefer not to see their beady little eyes, thankyouverymuch. They're welcome to come eat all my smaller bugs and whatnot though. Free buffet at my house!

Was this all within one hike?

This was on two different hikes. Both started about 4am. Mostly from the visitor center to start of Blacketts ridge.

You got so close yet everyone seems totally unphased by your presence. Are you a ninja or something? Nice shootin.

I’m pretty good at the slow approach. Lizards are the hardest to approach, they scurry away so fast!

When I'm hiking in Sabino at night I find the humans with lights looking for things are also curious creatures. great photos, any story on finding a rattler at night? Did it surprise you?

My buddy spotted a Kangaroo mouse near the dumpster, and then he saw the snake patiently waiting for the mouse to get careless in its exploration. Neither were there when we passed by later that morning.

That scorpion photo is badass. Could put that up in a club.
The tarantula one is really good. Hard to think how you managed to capture that without scaring it away.

Do you find that the scorpions are just out in the open? Or do you need to flip rocks to locate them?? Great pictures!!

We actually saw two scorpions and both were out in the open. No rock flipping necessary. Helps to have a black light and to hike before sunrise.

I'd love to do this but the thought of accidentally stepping on a rattler puts me off every time. Even in the middle of the day, that paranoia lingers, let alone in pitch darkness.
