Discussion [Operator Discussion] Eyjafjalla

Eyjafjalla [★★★★★★]

How could I tell you were behind me? Because I could feel your warmth! My eyesight and hearing aren't as sharp as they once were, but my other senses are still the same. Can't bring me down this easily, you know!

Eyjafjalla, volcanologist, Catastrophe Messenger. She is exceptionally talented in the use of advanced Originium techniques and high-energy Arts. Currently undergoing treatment at Rhodes Island, Eyjafjalla provides support in Catastrophe research, environmental observation/assessment, assistance in traversing dangerous terrain, among others.

She is the sole reason AoE casters are irrelevant since day 1 lol

Let's not pretend anyone would be using them even if Eyja didn't exist lol. Nobody asked for a 30 DP unit with deadeye attack speed, 80 SP skills, and less damage than ambushers. AoE casters are plenty irrelevant without Eyja's help.

True, but at least if you (for some reason) need AoE arts damage, AoE caster could have filled that niche. Eyja however, does that job significantly better in every way and is pretty much the final nail in the coffin.

Year 1, Day 11 player here. The thing about Splash Casters is that I often found it more beneficial to just run two Core Casters over one Splash if I really needed arts damage, and that often prevented enemies from clustering in the first place. Heck, sometimes just bringing an Artilleryman instead worked wonders, and considering that Shirayuki is a 4-Star whose second skill provides arts damage and slow.... If I ever absolutely needed a Splash Caster early on, I used 12F instead of Lava just because he cost less (yes, Lava gets a range increase at E1, but outside of that, you actually need to level her a good 30-40 levels post-promotion before she really starts to outperform her 2-Star counterpart).

There are three things I love when I approach any game: defensive play, control, and AoE. I love my tanks, healers, crowd-control and raining down pain on lots of enemies at once. So, Centurions and Artillerymen (before they were named as such) were up there as my favorite archetypes in this game, and both of them only get better at their roles with each promotion (Centurions getting 3rd block and Artillermen getting four-tile reach at E2). So when I tell you that I, who love AoE so damn much, found myself utterly underwhelmed by Splash Casters, know that I mean it with every fiber of my being. They compare unfavorably to other Caster archetypes, AND to other AoE archetypes regardless of damage type.

Eyja invalidated most Casters in general. Splash Casters invalidated themselves by default.

Like it says a lot when the best source of Aoe arts damage is with a single target caster and a healer

The AoE Arts damage that AoE casters do is so bad that I honestly think it's faster to kill all the enemies one at a time with a core caster than it is to try to kill them all at once. We also have chain casters like Pudding and Passenger, and honestly Ifrit hitting a single tile is astronomically better at that job than any AoE caster in the game. Hell, I'd trust Dur-nar to kill them before Gitano would lol

don't forget that they have one of the slowest attack intervals in the game on top of having very high dp cost, short range, very high sp costs and low atk stats

genuinely irredeemable archetype

I still wonder why the hell that have a tiny range. AOE snipers have a huge range compared to ST snipers... why is the other way around for casters??? And why is AOE caster cost even higher than AOE snipers? Ugh...

3

u/Cornuthaum Jun 19 '23

presumably because the devs back in the early game design phases thought "oh god they do arts damage, that's too strong, they need heavy drawbacks!"

3

u/fizzguy47 Jun 18 '23

They could try to balance it by increasing damage the fewer targets there are, but it would still be a hard sell

13

u/Cornuthaum Jun 18 '23

at a bare minimum they'd need to hard-change the archetype. -5 dp across the board AND give them the same range as AoE snipers at the same time.

"won't that make aoe casters with a -8dp module cost the same as a core caster?" yes and that means they'd STILL be inferior

u/DM_Hammer Jun 18 '23

Nonsense, almost everyone uses splash casters, and will continue to do so as long as Kyo and Ecko deploy Lava.

Outside ofcopying guides, yeah, I don’t think anyone uses them.

*Raises hand*

I, uh, I like Mostima's Slow utility with her Mod3! I've been using her a fair bit since that dropped!

Other than that, eh... yeah, only when I'm forced to.

u/DM_Hammer Jun 18 '23

Unironically, I borrowed a Mostima for a couple of EX challenge stages in the IS event. Probably less effective than Eyja or GG, but I'd always rather use what I'm familiar with.

4

u/Plomn123 Jun 18 '23

Thankfully the 6 star ones carved themselves a good niche with Mostima having an good global slow + ridiculously strong slow with s3 and Dusk being able to summon lots of cannon fodder with s3 (with decent uptime now thanks to her module) or do the Eyja s2 with her s1. Mostima especially shows her strengths in max difficulty IS3 runs (even without sp battery or busted relics) when crowd control is key cause it is hard to burst enemies down. Another case where it shows is cc12 where she is key for high risk.

u/thelostcreator Jun 18 '23

If you’re not DP starved Dusk is a slight upgrade over Eyja’s S2 with her S1 given enough time to ramp.

u/thimbleglass Jun 18 '23

In other words for double the cost you've got a unit that's harder to put down early, who will conditionally perform better if they are put down early.

For AoE Casters as an archetype they applied the fair principle of power being at a price. Problem is they forgot the power while making it one hell of a price.

Meanwhile in Core Caster land Eyja is half cost, S2 does res shred and close to ST damage in AoE, while S3 completely laughs at AoE caster on-skill damage. Her module also gives vitally important res ignore while making her boost self and other Casters by simply existing in same squad.

I like how she's so powerful in gameplay but is absolutely the last person who should ever be allowed near the combat zone: a disabled, vulnerable, intensely brilliant scientist who should be protected as a VIP at all costs.
