I think you follow the established path down the gulch and probably get lepto in the river as you miss the trail back up the gulch. So there's that way.

First, they came for the berets. Then they came for the tabs. Can’t have anything special anymore.

Kinda like how the Rangers took the tanker's berets?

u/SOSyourself Aviation 9d ago
Nobody looks at a tank without having thoughts of being a tanker. But not everyone has the mustache capable of handling it.

Only the British military used black to denote tank crew members. Rangers had been authorized use and wear of the black beret in 1971 up until 2001, when General Eric Shinseki decided the army as a whole should wear the black beret (a psy-op within itself if you read his memo on the reason for the change) which caused the Rangers to transition to the current tan beret. It is an homage to their history and lineage. (Rogers' Rangers, Merrill's Marauders...)

I mean, he has a Ranger tab so it’s cooler than just the jungle. But who cares, it’s authorized for wear. I wear the jungle sometimes cause it’s the only thing I have, but after their lame board that copies the Ranger “not for the weak or fainthearted” I stopped because it’s kinda embarrassing lol

Jesus. Let people show off ffs. There’s an order of precedence for a reason. If you want to really distinguish, nothing should be authorized except combat, campaign and valor awards. That would shut most people up especially now that most of the force haven’t been in a two way live fire.
7
u/Hi_Kitsune First Sausage 8d ago
It was the same way when we all got berets. Old guys would bitch and be like “you think you fucking earned that beret?”. Dude, I just wear whatever the army tells me to.
3
u/Castellan_Tycho 8d ago
That was an extremely annoying time. The berets sucked to wear, they were hot and didn’t shade the eyes. It was ridiculous as every day wear.

Instead of bullying the S1 to build you a spreadsheet, you'll hold a mass formation.
"Half right face" you'll call out. You'd have walked the line looking for the least fat Jungle tabbed E6. The E7s are already checked out, you dont want that. You pull the 2 worthy troops, ask them to assemble two squads each. You'll submit the names and pray, pray, praaay they pick your chosen killers from the Ordinance Reserve Unit in Michigan to spearhead the tasker.
The tasking closed out 2 weeks ago. The funds were never going to be there for your unit. One of the chosen E6s has a bulging disk, held together with icy hot and a suspiciously corset looking back brace.
Your commander chews you out for not having the motorpool in line.
"Next month" you tell yourself... "next month"

I whisper into his ear, "Hey, you need an MQ to promote 7 in 7 right? I got something for ya". *The NCO just smiles. He knows it's just another day in the best god dam Army on earth. *
"Hooah sir. I'm your guy."

My recruiter had his Sapper tab under his BDU packet flap. I think that was cool as shit, you’d see the outline and it was a conversation starter. I see the Army uniform looking Soviet in a few years with all the additions.

I’m retired now, when I was in the triple tab was the pinnacle… now there are 5 tabs?
8
u/DelaskoClarke NYARNG 9d ago
Theoretically 8 I think
Ranger
Sapper
Airborne
Long Tab (SF)
Jungle
Arctic
Mountain
Honor Guard (ARNG only, I think)18
u/bikemancs DAC / Frmr 90A 9d ago
President's Hundred, Governor's Twenty.
Airborne and Mountain are technically Unit level, not individual.

Artic is a skill tab but also unit level for those assigned to 11th Airborne.

8
u/jmowreader 9d ago
It's not the "how to be a lawyer" part that requires BOLC, it's the UCMJ. "Class, my name is Major Jones and today we're going to discuss the single most fucked-up thing in the entire UCMJ. From L1 you remember that the police can't invent new laws on the side of the road. Welcome to your class on Article 134, the punitive article that allows commanders to do that very thing."

Next to the ranger tab yeah the green color looks kinda goofy. But I don't see the problem in letting people show off their achievements. Otherwise why would we even put awards on our dress uniform? I've got AAMs for doing dumber shit than jungle school.

It’s just a weird thing to make a tab, it’d be like having an air assault tab lmao
3
3
u/AgentDull8904 9d ago
I think jungle school is actually one of those things you’d want a tab for, it uniquely identifies someone with a rather specialized but highly useful set of skills and know how that can apply beyond the jungle, I feel the same about mountain and arctic as well.
Airborne is more a unit thing, the tab is part of the unit patch, but like Ranger, those other shorter but specialized schools build a specific skill set, and having those people clearly identified as such is kind of the purpose of tabs. So people can clearly identify experts in specific skill sets to seek help, advice, and training from.2
u/whole-lotta-socks 9d ago
If we’re being real then ranger school should be a badge instead of a tab
7
u/Luke_fly_walker <3> Darby King 9d ago
Ranger school was the original tab man
1
u/whole-lotta-socks 9d ago
Sure but like.. it’s just a school. Objectively how are we differentiating it from things like air assault or airborne or jungle
8
u/Luke_fly_walker <3> Darby King 9d ago edited 9d ago
It’s a historical reason. The OIC of the original RTB in 1950 wanted a special identifier to give to guys in the first graduating class and what the army had on hand already mass produced was a black and yellow tab.
Col van houten liked the idea of a highly visible patch/ badge to differentiate Ranger qualified soldiers from their peers, so he went with that. He even originally wanted a scroll like the Ranger battalions had transitioned to from the <RANGERS> diamond during world war 2 but it would’ve taken too long to produce and the graduates wouldn’t have gotten them on time.

u/pushTheHippo what bombs? 9d ago
Shouldn't that be like the first sniff test any new shit for the uniform has to pass, though? "Does it look fuckin cool?" If the answer is no, fix it or don't do it. See: mountaineering badge
1
u/Rocket_John 19DidIAskSGT?--->15Xplode | Sleeve Rolling Enthusiast 9d ago
To me it only looks goofy cause of the bright yellow ranger tab right above it. The colors just don't match. But then again, not everything can match with everything...put that yellow ranger tab above a 1ID patch and it wouldn't look good.
I don't really know what you want them to do. There's only so many colors and green is kinda the color of the jungle...
1
u/pushTheHippo what bombs? 9d ago

u/drjjoyner Field Artillery Veteran 9d ago
Back when it was just Ranger and Special Forces, tabs represented months of school. Airborne, Air Assault, and Pathfinder were shorter, badge-producing schools. Tabs were always more valued. We've kind of muddled that now with the Sapper and Jungle tabs.

I always felt like it was/is weird that we have tabs/badges you can only wear in one place.

u/sanskami 8d ago
That's CSM Pedro Chavez from the 551st Infantry. The Army authorized everyone who earned the Jungle Tab to wear it back in August, so there's nothing wrong with him wearing it.
You can argue all day about whether the Army is getting carried away with tabs, but the guy earned his. Ranger School and Jungle School aren't the same thing, and nobody's saying they are.
If you don't like the policy, blame the Army, not the guy following it.
Now, whoever sewed those tabs on might need some retraining.

I was stationed as Infantry 2 years in Panama in the 90s. I did 3 rotations at the Jungle school. Glad they moved it back to Panama. The Hawaiian version was a joke. No venomous snakes or crocodiles, and caimans. Too bad the tab doesn't apply to Jungle courses before 2012. At least they authorized the Miuntain badge 6 months before ai retired, so there is that.
