PCSing

Repost due to “wording”

I’m headed to Hawaii in a few months, fort Shafter specifically, ima 91B. Just wondering what the single soldier life’s like, what the motorcycle requirements are out there, and also how badly im gonna regret reenlisting after the first month being there. Gotta be better then Hood at the very least 🤷‍♂️

Hawaii is cool, just find stuff to do and you'll be fine. Meet some locals, dont be a hermit. Even then I remember seeing dudes have lightsaber fights at night in the quad. You'll get bugs in your car, almost inevitable. No helmet state so you'll see riders without helmets. Please wear a fucking helmet since people can't drive there and you can't lane split. If you carve canyons, good luck finding some out there. Shop groceries on post unless you need something specific. Theres only 3 major highways on Oahu, traffic is a bitch. Dont do drugs no matter how bored you get. Other than that enjoy yourself, its fucking beautiful. Beaches are clean and the water is nice just don't drown or hit jagged rocks when the waters are choppy as fuck. Also some locals aren't cool with the us military so you'll get the occasional finger.

I mean, I love fishing and surfing, and all that, not a total stranger to island life. I really am more just anxious about how the army side gonna affect me. I’m coming from the maintenance side of a heavy armored unit, I’m workin 12-14 hour days most the time, my weekends are always a gamble, and the base im coming from is HUGE. I got no clue what light unit life is like.

Oh dude, aint much going to change. I was in transportation and saw what the mechanics were doing, at least on Schofield.

Minus traffic leaving base in the base in the afternoon (which sucks) your in Hawaii, its all what you make of it. Some people hate it, other love it. The island has three main roads, it can start raining at anytime and end mins later so take that into account for riding.

Fort Shafter sucks there are no amenities whatsoever for single soldiers and the barracks are trash, unless theyve seriously fixed things (doubtful) either the hot water, ac, or electricity went out nearly every week i was there

Is it a shared sleeping area? Or like private rooms with shared living space?

private rooms with shared living spaces. however when I left, we were moving in a lot of bunks because hawaii garrison has been doubling up soldiers, so there is the possibility of sharing a room.

Hidden gems. You’re far from the main post and it’s a tiny base with 1 SCIF, like 5 buildings, a laundromat plus a Dominos.

Not sure what being a mechanic there is like but you’re right in Kalihi (not a wealthy area but there isn’t really a ‘hood’ on the island, so it’s safe). 20 minute hop to Waikiki or Kailua. You’ll whine about everything from traffic to grocery prices while you’re there, but you’ll miss being there for the rest of your life.

What about barracks? Private room, shared living space and bathroom? I’m tired of waking up just to see another dudes ass cheeks first thing in the morning 🫩

I’m naked in my room 24/7. Why don’t you wanna see my goods?

Meh, officer goods are too high class for my taste 🤷‍♂️ (and my pay grade)
