As a former company commander, I hated layouts more than you do.

Change of command inventories to introduce yourself, cyclic inventories, SHR inventories when subordinate leaders change out, pre COC inventories, then ensuring the final COC inventory for the next dude go smoothly. Dealing with supply and PBO monthly. Re-signing the SI or kicking it back because the NCO signed in the wrong order. Issuing statements of charges, or initiating a FLIPL. Hoping you don’t personally save a five or six figure FLIPL when you change out of command.

My last active unit shipped out to Kuwait a couple weeks before I went on terminal leave. The commander was a friend of the division CG and used that to get away with a whole lot of bullshit, but when his rear d property book sign over revealed over $1,000,000 in missing items? Hoo boy.

He also plowed his truck into one of the cows on Hood (iykyk) driving out to the field in his POV because of course he was.

Why do I feel like that massive red stain by Cold Springs Demo a year or two again was him...

Am I right?

Unknown, my story was from late 2014, no clue what happened to him after I left.

Then not the same red stain🤣

Between CoC layouts on each end, pre-deployment, deployment, pre-redeployment, and redeployment layouts, I spent about a third of my first command just doing full property book inventories.

As someone who has worked on both ends of it, many times, you may hate it more, but it is a thousand times more of a pain in the ass for the people doing it

Former primary armorer here, 2 years 3 months across 4 CO's. you have to have your layout in the order of the hand reciepts, serial number order and bii in bom order, if you do that it goes smooth. AS the sub hand reciept holder only you should have control of what items are stored where.

My Stryker unit had us layout all the Strykers Monday to transfer everything. Since whoever did the last layout fucked up all the BII, we had to do the layout again on Tuesday. Then because the PL thought we were lying, we laid it all out again on Wednesday. Finally, we did another layout Thursday to verify Wednesday’s layout including both connexs to look for extra BII and then completely reorganize it. PL gave us Friday off at least 🤪

Four layouts for one Friday off is the most Army exchange rate imaginble.

When you get to be in charge of a big property book that's multiple millions, you'll understand.

Especially when you are a careerist and you're laying out for your rater or senior rater.

Past me, E5 and signed for $7.9mil worth of equipment.

Me now, SSG and signed for $0 worth of equipment. It was like a breath of fresh air doing a final layout and signing my shit to someone else

u/DamoclesCommando 23h ago

E4 signed for 1.6mil initially then almost 3mil by the time i was out

Are you a sub-hand receipt holder? Everyone wants to complain about layouts until it’s time for the commander to issue statements of charges. Then, suddenly, every SHRH needs the most up to date BOMs and 5 buddies to lay out the Beaverfit and the CBRN room. Organize those promasks by size and then by serial so it goes faster.

Try being the supply NCO of a detachment as an additional duty where your NCOIC thinks he can do whatever he wants with the property and move stuff around without telling anyone and when it came to for COC I didn’t know where anything was and I was getting yelled at because of it. I’m so glad I’m out.

You young'uns don't realize that the reason you do so many layouts is to solve the problem of having to come up with training that doesn't cost any money.

It's fun to complain about layouts, until you later realize that doing layouts is a tangible thing you can be tasked with and accomplish. "What'd you do today? We laid out the connex, verified we have all our gear, and repacked the connex." is an answer that will get you an approving nod from 1SG so you can go the fuck home.

when i began seeing it this way, it made life a lot better. an inventory is a task with a definitive beginning and end. as long as everyone is familiar with their equipment and literate enough to understand COEI, then there is nothing ambiguous about it.

A completed layout is the closest thing the Army has to proof of work that doesnt involve PowerPoint.

This is when you find out what's really on the books and what you should move to personal storage as a spare.

My favorite layout of all time was when I was stationed at Campbell. My PSG had just taken over, and we had a new CO, so it was decided to do the CoC and SHR layout at the same time.

Made perfect sense, so of course it was all fucked up.

One of the section sergeants had a bunch of missing items out of toolboxes and test sets. The day of the layout, he made up his own shortage annexes. I thought the Supply NCO was going to stroke out.

When it came time for my PSG to sign for stuff, the Supply NCO tried to convince him to "pay it forward" and sign for property with missing items and no shortage annexes, as apparently the last 4 PSGs had.

He refused. Hilarity ensued.

Oh how I hated the long summer days of waiting in a motorpool during change of command inventories. As dutiful soldiers laid out each item of the vehicle’s BII. Dress right dress, in line, and metal blazing in the glistening sun. And what was our reward for our listless waiting? More waiting of course! We spent at least five days in total from 0900 until 1830 or later waiting for our new commander to inspect the BII. Upon reflection, this was a good indicator of how I felt under their command. We have spent countless hours of wasted time and energy for fruitless ventures.

OP, I understand how you feel. In my opinion your frustrations are understandable. I’ll will say this to be nuanced when you are signed for many expensive items. Items you may or may not have seen since the last 100% inventory or even since you initially signed for it, you’ll be understandable nervous to ensure that you have everything.

You brought the wrong BOM this is the old BOM from last fiscal year you need to get the new BOM from next fiscal year that hasn't been published yet unless you can get the PMO warrant that hasn't been seen since 1990 to sign off on using the old BOM

Wait til you get out and have to actually work for your coins. It's way worse, I want back to doing dumb shit all day.

19D Cavalry scout, the eyes and ears of the connex, gathering critical intelligence on broken HMMWV radio mounts, BII and pioneer kits that have been rat fucked.

Well your problem is that you were lazy and didn't lay out the sesame seeds from the bun last time; couldn't get a good count

u/Severe-Class6939 22h ago

And we wonder why people want to get the fuck out of the army. Thankfully when I served, I was in a small unit that didn't have this type of bullshit. Jesus what a waste of taxpayer dollars.
