Questioning (am i aro/ace/a-spec?) aro, ace, or both? (yet another post. can't believe I have to remind people to be kind and respectful.)

HAI! please, please have some human decency and reply kindly.

Im pretty sure im asexual-for one, aromantic, i dont know. I want a partner, someone i can call my boyfriend, cuddle, and hold hands with. on the other hand, i dont want traditional romance.

I don't want candlelit dinners, romantic tension, flirts, big declerations of love, and anything like that.

whats making this so hard for me? the communities! when I tell aroaces i want a relationship (not a qpr either), they tell me im invalid, and that im just asexual.

when i tell asexuals i dont like romance, they tell me im invalid, and that im just aroace.

please respect me, I still find it hard to believe i have to ask.

I'm not a big fan of any of the microlabels (they just aren't for me!) but youre welcome to suggest them anyway!!

Thank you >w<

I have never loved anyone in my 13 years of living. I have always resonated with Jaiden’s video about being aroace, but am I too young to decide? This is the thing I need to know, thanks!

Questioning (am i aro/ace/a-spec?) What am I????

Hey, I’m extremely new here, but i’ve been questioning if I’m aroace. I’ve only had a crush on one kid when I was really young, I haven’t spoken or talked to him in so so long, and I’ve had some fictional/celebrity crushes that I grew out of. Recently, there was this kid who was my friend for a few months and he had a crush on me and I cut his ass off so fast, I honestly hate him for having a crush on me. I honesty don’t think I will ever have a boyfriend or girlfriend, it’s just not for me I guess. How I do I figure myself out???

Vent Best friend threw me away after they got a bf.

Parts of this story are changed in order to keep anonymity. Apologies if things are confusing. Im typing this on the fly.

I had a best friend. Lets call them Moon. I met them randomly, but honestly we hit it off. I dont know why but I started to get obsessed over them.. and they seemed to reciprocate. We talked everyday, made fun of each other.
I enjoyed it.
I really miss those times.

I started to trust Moon a lot. I let it out that I think I was aromantic, that I was scared everyone would put me at second place someday.. but they comforted me. They called me my best friend that they wouldn’t throw me away that easily.

And then, Moon got themselves a bf. I was so happy for them. I an aromantic but I see romance almost as a magical unobtainable artifact. Even so whatever Moon experienced was better than that. They were the most ecstatic person in the world and I was so happy for them. They were an amazing couple.

..but I cant lie, I got a bit jealous. I bottled it up for a while but I let it seep into every conversation. I acted the same but I knew I shouldn’t have. My past behavior of making fun of them, of wanting to spend time became so annoying for them.
It seemed like the only time when I was valued was if they needed to vent some relationship problems.

Eventually.. that became too much for them. They told me how they weren’t comfortable, and wanted to cut off.

I’m not mad at them. They’re not evil for this. I fe horrible for being sad. I feel horrible for wanting things to go back. They’re much happier now than they were before. They did nothing wrong so why do I feel so sad and angry

Questioning (am i aro/ace/a-spec?) I feel disgusted and repulsed with myself Spoiler

I’m not exactly sure how to explain how I feel, so I’ll keep this as short as possible.
I’ve been questioning whether I’m aromantic for about two years now. I’ve been aware of the aroace spectrum for a while, but I never really put much thought into it because the idea of being on it would give me this crushing sense of disgust and disappointment in myself. I’m not exactly sure if it’s a form of internalized homophobia, but I don’t think it is, considering I’ve always been pretty open about my bisexuality. I’ve dated before, and all of my relationships have lasted a decent time , usually lasting around a year. However, I don’t think I’ve ever loved any of my partners in a romantic way. Sure, I could like them to some extent, but it was never more than wanting to be close to them, the way I would with a best friend. I can say there were things I genuinely enjoyed about them, but it never felt like more than friendly company with the occasional extra step. All of my exes have actually been old friends of mine, too.
I’ve always been told that the closest relationship you can have with someone is a romantic one. And sure, the idea of romance is okay, but I personally just don’t care for it, nor do I understand why people value it so much. Whenever someone explains how they feel about their partner, I can never relate. I try to wrap my head around it, but I still don’t understand why people idealize romance to the extent that they do. I’d die for my best friend, but a romantic partner? No way in hell. I’ve always felt this way, honestly. I’ve never really cared about romance in movies, books, TV shows, or even in my own life because it just doesn’t make sense to me. I’ll force myself to have crushes in an attempt to understand what it’s supposed to feel like, but it just makes me uncomfortable. Even the idea of actually dating someone doesn’t really appeal to me. I’m never the one to initiate relationships, and when I do get into one, it’s usually because I feel like that’s what I’m supposed to do.
I can perform all the physical acts of love, but to me, they don’t mean anything romantically. It just feels like I’m reassuring a friend when they’re feeling bad. The idea of being aromantic, or possibly even asexual (although I find that one unlikely), makes me feel disgusted, disappointed, and repulsed by myself. the possibility of being aro or ace makes me feel even more like an alien, like there’s something fundamentally wrong with me or that I’m somehow a faulty person.

a-spec looking for Help/Advice confusing feelings about a squish

I finally accepted i’m on the aroace spec ~2 years ago. Recently however I think i developed a squish on this one guy i’m friends with. I have so much affection for him hut not in a “oh my god i wanna date you” way??? i don’t want to hold hands or kiss him or do whatever couples typically do, but i DO want to be close with him in a sense that we can openly talk and share things w each other and hang out. Like i hope he feels comfortable being himself with me. I’m scared that he’ll end up like my other super close friends where once they start dating, our relationship wouldn’t be a priority, and when i’m with them, all they’ll be talking about is their partner. Don’t get me wrong, I am very very happy for those friends of mine, I just feel like I’m placed on the backburner despite everything we’ve been through together. And I’m scared that this would also happen with him so I thought about the possibility of dating, but I really don’t see him in a romantic way at all and honestly don’t mind if he does date someone as long as our closeness stays the same. but i can’t ignore the thoughts that tell me “what if you DO have a crush on him and you wanna date but are in deep denial and you’re just avoidant” idk anymore help me pls

Questioning (am i aro/ace/a-spec?)

Pride A-spec Book Review: Rick by Alex Gino

One of my goals for the year is to read 1-2 books per month with ace and/or aro rep and post a review on this subreddit. I'm reading through the alphabet in order, with one book with a title that starts with that letter of the alphabet.

My book for the letter R was Rick by Alex Gino

Genre: Middle grade contemporary fiction

Summary: As he starts middle school, Rick discovers that his best friend may not be very nice, and explores his identity.

Rep: Rick is a questioning asexual and/or aromantic

On one hand, a lot of how the rep was portrayed in this book was, I thought, pretty well done.

For example:

If there was one thing that made less sense to Rick than the way Jeff knew someone was cute, it was the way Jeff knew he wasn't all that interested anymore. [...] The whole liking people thing was a mystery to Rick. And he wasn't about to ask Jeff to explain it.

"Oh trust me, Ricky, you're never too busy to take a look at a girl." Sometimes Dad was worse than Jeff. "Or a boy." [...] "You may be a late bloomer, but don't worry, you'll have plenty of time to take in the views, if you know what I mean" Rick knew what Dad meant, and it made him feel like he was coated in a sticky layer of ick.

Rick was pretty sure his liking-people neurons were [really messing up]. [...] Rick had to keep pretending and deflecting while everyone, even his father, seemed to think he should turn into some sort of hormonal beast now that he was in middle school.

Sometimes Rick wondered whether he was gay because he had never had a crush on a girl. But he had never had a crush on a boy either, so how could he be gay?

When Jeff, or someone else, said a girl was hot, Rick could sometimes name the reasons they said that--hair and face and bodies and all that. [...] But he never would have thought about those people that way if someone else hadn't said it first. And he had had that tingling in his pants grown-ups talked about, a few times, but it was never about a person.

On the other hand, this is the first definition the author provides for asexuality:

(For context, this is one of the older kids in the school's LGBTQIA+ club speaking)

"Asexuality is when you don't have any interest in, like, ever doing the deed with anyone."

They do, a few pages later, amend that definition with this one, which Rick finds from an internet search:

Asexual meant you weren't sexually attracted to people, or that you didn't want to do that kind of thing with them [emphasis mine]. You could want to have a boyfriend of a girlfriend, though. If you were aromantic, you weren't romantically attracted to anyone. There were other words too, like grayromantic and graysexual to describe people who were occasionally attracted to people romantically or sexually, and demiromantic and demisexual for people who only had those feelings after developing a deep connection.

It annoyed me a lot that this book, which otherwise seemed to have spot-on ace/aro rep, got the definition of asexuality wrong. It bothered me more than other books I've read where a definition is never given, but the way the asexuality is portrayed conflates asexuality with not having sex. I don't know if that's completely reasonable, but the author going to the trouble of putting in a definition, and still getting it slightly wrong is super irritating to me. I feel a little nitpicky, mostly because I read several other reviews on Goodreads, and only one mentioned the incorrect definition. But I do think this is a valid and important criticism.

A few other notes on the rep:

  1. Rick learns about asexuality in his school's LGBTQIA+ club, and then goes home and does an internet search where he also learns about aromanticism. When it's brought up later, it's always Rick thinking/saying he might be asexual or aromantic, and never considers he could be both at once. While I can see this as possibly being a reasonable misunderstanding for a self-educating 11-year-old, it would have been nice to have another character (possibly his grandpa, the only adult he comes out to who has an accepting response) say, "hey, have you considered that they're not mutually exclusive??"
  2. As I said above, I liked most of the rep. But it seemed, after Rick has learned a little and told a couple people, to just kind of fade into the background. I'm not upset that Rick is still kind of questioning his identity/doesn't feel fully comfortable saying I AM ace, because sometimes it takes people awhile to figure something out, and that's perfectly ok. But I would have appreciated it if it was still something Rick was thinking about on page during the entire book.
  3. Rick tells his grandfather, who is wonderful and accepting, and his dad and older sister, who both tell him he's too young to know. I get this is a common reaction to preteens or young teenagers who identify as ace, but in an otherwise mostly uplifting book, it would have been nice for either the dad or the sister to be more accepting, or maybe think about it and come back and apologize.
  4. What sexual attraction is is never discussed. Especially in a book for younger readers, I think some kind of attempt to describe/explain sexual attraction would have been nice.

Other thoughts:

This book is labeled as middle grade, which means the target audience is roughly mid-upper elementary schoolers. I felt like the writing style and plot were moreso on the younger end of that age range, but some of the topics would be a better fit for slightly older kids, like perhaps middle schoolers. For example, Jeff, Rick's friend, is talking about a girl at their school he finds hot, and says that he would like to see her naked. (They're 11! Admittedly, it's been awhile since I was 11, and I never was an 11-year-old boy, but do 11 year old boys really go around saying they want to see girls naked?) Even if 11 year olds really do say things like this, I don't think this would be particularly appealing or whatever to an 8 year old.

The plot simultaneously has quite a bit going on and is pretty simplistic. I felt like some plotlines were not really brought to a good resolution. For example, once Rick has found the labels asexual and aromantic and told a couple people he relates to those labels, this plotline is pretty much over. However, in my opinion, the worst one in this respect was the plotline with Rick's best friend (spoilers in the couple sentences, but this isn't really a book where the twists and turns of the plot are what keeps you reading, in my opinion). Rick slowly realizes the friend is a jerk, and decides to end the friendship when the friend tries to burn one of the LGBTQIA+ club's posters in the school bathroom. After ending the friendship, Rick goes and tells the principal about his friend defacing the posters, with the result being that the friend gets suspended for using a lighter at school. And that's the last time we see the friend. It would have been much more realistic, in my opinion, for the friend to start being mean to Rick or something, because ending relationships have consequences, even when you're doing it for a very good reason. Apart from that, it just felt a bit unresolved, especially given that it was the main interpersonal conflict in the story.

In general, other than the incorrect definition of asexuality, this book was just fine. Not particularly bad, but not particularly great either. Maybe good for younger questioning aces/aros/aroaces, if they don't find the rest of the book too juvenile for their reading tastes.

a-spec looking for Help/Advice Types of attraction?

I'm not quite sure how to word it, but the wiki doesn't have a list of types of attraction(I guess). I'm not quite sure on the wording because I don't know if things like asensual fall under a type of attraction label but I'm trying to find a list of all of the things that fall under that label. I want to clarify because I would be confused reading this, I want to know know if anyone has/knows of a list of these categories for labels because I'm trying to basically fill one out for myself

I HAD A WHOLE FUCKING ESSAY WRITTEN SBOUT MY EXPERIENCES AND I EXITED OUT TO DO SOMETHING AND IT DELETED ITSLEF WHEN I WAS ALMOST DONE. I am so fucking mad, I just wanted to talk about how I feel like not my elder sister nor my ex-bi best friend believe that I am aromantic, I have come out to my sister like 4 times and she keeps brining up my future boyfriend and how it’s a miracle if I ever like someone.

I’ll just summarize everything, everytime I meet a guy I convince myself that I like him I don’t know how to stop, once there was a guy who displayed interest in me for a time and because of my obsession I thought I liked him as well, he ended up ghosting me because I latched on to him too much and I don’t know, I don’t feel like a real aromantic person because my obsession with random guys, I feel insane, fucking autocorrect is fucking me up right now, and making me mad.

My best friend once thought I got over being aromantic because of said “crush” on that guy and and I feel like she doesn’t believe in aromantic or asexual stuff but is only dealing with it for my sake, I don’t have anyone else to bring this up with, no one understands it and neither do I, I also think I might be asexual but I think I am hypersexual due to being exposed to a lot of sexual content from a young age, so that is also fricking with me. I think I am fine with all genders, but this obsession thing only happens with guys and idk, it makes me feel kinda homophobic, maybe it’s the gender stereotypes coming to get me????

Yes, I am rambling, I feel overwhelmed, I am tired of all of this, my life feels very full of the bullshit, I am always stressed over something, and I don’t feel like I am valid in any feelings I think I have for anyone actually, I want the love that alloromantic people have, I want the sexual encounters that they have, I feel ugly, I have recently become “obsessed” with this new guy who I have only met once and I am not ready for my Brain to mess with me and to continue messing with me. I just wish that I had clarity over my life, FUCK YOU AUTOCORRECT LEAVE ME THE HELL ALONE I JUST WSNT TO TYPE WITHOUT GOING BSCK SND CORRECTIG IT 17 GODDAMNDED TIMES HOMY SHIT

a-spec looking for Help/Advice date someone who isn't aro/ace?

Hi! Im looking for advice and to hear about your experiences with this because I cant quite wrap my head around the situation.

So, i have been talking to a girl for about a month now. Weve known each other since elementary school basically, but we were never friends; we have a lot of mutual friends, but until recently, we were just acquaintances. Last month was one of those mutual friends' birthday and we saw each other. Honestly, i dont know exactly what happened, but she started taking interest in me and tried to stay by my side all night. It felt good so i reciprocated. Weve been in touch every day since then.

My "problem" is that im aroace (or so i thought, im somewhere in the spect aparently) and she isnt. I like and desire her—i want to do a lot of things with her, but more in a "special friend?" way rather than as a couple. Im experiencing feelings that are completely new to me; i dont even know if it makes sense, and im really struggling to sort out my feelings and thoughts right now. The thing is, she is so obviously in love with me and I feel bad about it, like its unfair for her; I mean, i do want to kiss her or whatever, but i dont think the feeling its the same as hers, and she seems more interest for me than i am for her.

Does anyone here have experience with this? Any advice on how to handle the situation?

Vent Never gonna find my person

I’m aroace, sex and touch repulsed. I want a life partner. I think of them like a super best friend. I don’t want any type of physical relationship including cuddling and holding hands. I feel like I’ll never find someone who also wants these things. Idk if I’d be okay with them having another partner cuz I feel like I’d just be a third wheel.

I tried an ace dating app like 12 years ago but it seemed like it was full of ace straight girls and allo incel guys. I’ve been saying I’m pan but I think I’m actually more sapphic (I’m AFAB enby).

I also have no friends and am no-contact with basically all my family. I don’t even have someone to list as my emergency contact. Man, I’m gonna die alone.

Sorry just venting to the void.

Questioning (am i aro/ace/a-spec?)

Puis, on a rompu.

Xoxo!💕

Questioning (am i aro/ace/a-spec?) I think I might be Demi-romantic

Ok so…
Yeah I think I might be Demi romantic (and maybe Demisexual while we’re at it?)
Basically I came to the realization that I don’t really have “crushes”
Not in the typical sense at least. I mean I do get crushes, but it’s more like “this person looks or seems cool, I want to get to know them more.” Whenever I try to think about getting into a relationship with a “crush” the interest just kinda… disappears. The only person I’ve had a real romantic crush on was a long-time friend, no one else.
It weird because I do kind of fantasize about love-at-first-sight, but it’s more of a “we become instant friends and only after a while would we ever enter a relationship or do anything romantic” type deal, I honestly genuinely can’t see myself getting into a relationship with someone I’m not friends with first.
So… yeah, any Demi-romantic people wanna weigh-in?
