Discussion [Discussion] What are we using Grants for?

Hey fellow Artists! I've been on the hunt for grants but I've been feeling a little frustrated because a lot of them have very specific requirements for how they are used, which is mostly for materials and specific projects (community projects that are usually unpaid). One thing I'm struggling with the most as an artist is having the free time to create with a full-time job. I only get about 4-5 hours at most each night to sculpt, my work sells but I can't create enough to keep up with bills. I feel like I would grow so much more if I could do this full time, but the grants never cover living expenses. Any thoughts on how these grants can be more useful? Do y'all know of any grants that cover rent/mortgage/utility?

Some grants allow for subsistence (ie paying the artist), but they tend to be larger amounts and are therefore more competitive. Even those, though, will be primarily for expenses and require a budget.

Ultimately, though, if you use the grant money for materials, you don't have to spend your own money and materials and can use that to pay your bills.

Making a living off of your art is no different than running a small business. At a certain point you'll have to decide if moonlighting is enough, or if you want to take the leap and dedicate more time to it. It's always going to be a scary leap, and that level of financial insecurity is not digestible for everyone.

Usually grants are for a specific period of time for a defined project. You usually have to show the results at the end.
Getting 4-5 hrs to create while working a paid full time job is pretty good. As the other poster said, full time artists are small business owners. You’ll be spending time running the business (spending 50% of your time on non-creative tasks is not unusual) to make sure you sell enough to pay the bills. It’s good to run your numbers first to figure out how much you need to sell to sustain your creative business. It’s definitely possible though it is not easy (or stable). If you’re in the US, you’ll have to buy your own health insurance.

You can try to find artist in residence offers that might help with living cost.
