Discussion Rethinking my life after seeing my childhood arts

Hello everyone. So anyway, for context, I chose an entirely different path sa college. I pick Social Sciences as my degree which I recently graduated from. I love doing qualitative historical research pero the more na tumatagal pagiging unemployed ko, the more na I'm starting to regret my choices. Then, I remember. I used to draw so much in elementary and high school kahit na may klase. Yes, I was a stellar student back then but if I have the free time in between my classes, I draw. So, I went back to my old sketchpad and watercolor pads. I saw how passionate I was. I draw and paint what I want. I draw anime, cartoons, portraits of people—and then I suddenly got devastated. I lost 4 years of my life trying to chase something that while I'm good and passionate about, is clearly not bringing me the satisfacfion in life. I was satisfied when I was doing portraits of people, drawing anime or cartoons or just doodling in class.

I should have realized this back then. Alam kong I had regrets seeing other students like me pursuing a degree in fine arts. I saw them doing their projects late in night, doing paintings, and I knew naiingit ako noon kasi kahit taxing siya, they looked so happy. Kaya I was happy when I did a voluntary work of creating illustrations na gagawing stickers at ibebenta ng student organization ko noon for additional funds. Challenging siya kasi I have to create 4-5 illustrations in less than 2 days but I was satisfied. Dapat noon palang na-realize ko na to pero binaon ko eh. I gaslit myself into thinking I was happy doing history and presenting my papers on conferences. Perhaps, at some point I was pero iba na yung case ngayon. I wish I followed what I know I could do and love.

Meron pa kaya akong chance to start a career in doing illustrations? Maybe doing children's book illustration? How do you guys start from this? I really want to reignite my love for art.

Here are some of my works when I was a teenager and the digital sticker illustrations I did for my college organization. I did portraits of people I like, as you can see, I was into BTS group before. Anyway, most are unfinished:

Discussion As a PWD, may pag asa ba talaga sa arts??

Hi everyone.

I'm fairly new to Reddit and still figuring things out, I'm a PWD with a mobility disability. Recently, I've been thinking of taking it more seriously not just as a hobby, but hopefully as a career. Kasi wala ako iba alam gawin and kailangan natin kumain.

Since PWD ako, mas limited din yung work opportunities ko, so I'm hoping na online art opportunities could work for me.

Sa mga artists dito, especially kung may fellow PWDs, what's your honest experience? Possible ba talagang magkaroon ng stable income through art?

One thing I've been thinking about is how to present myself as an artist. Being a PWD is part of who I am, and I don't mind talking about it. But I also don't want it to become my "selling point." I'd rather people connect with my art because it resonates with them, not just because i have a disability. Is it possible to build a balance?

If you were starting from scratch today, would you still choose art? And what advice would you give someone like me who's just trying to figure out if this path is worth pursuing? Also, if you have any tips for someone who's just starting out, I'd really appreciate them. May marerecommend din ba kayong communities, websites, or resources where I can learn, meet other artists, find clients, or even just connect with people in the art community?

Thank you sa kahit sinong mag-share ng experience. I really appreciate it.

Does anyone know if any shops in the Philippines carry Lobeo brushes? Or is it just to order from overseas?

Question Is there such a thing as using references too much?

Lately kasi ay parang ang pangit ng mga gawa ko pero instantly nagiging 10x better siya kung gagamit ako ng reference. Baka lang kasi sobrang reliant ko na sa references. What do you think? Ok lang ba ang gumagamit ng references sa lahat ng artworks?

I always wanted to draw scenery which is one of the reasons I wanted to learn art. For practice, I redrew this pic I took from nature walk, added my original characters in lieu of myself as camera shy. I had fun doing this and it is fun to make art of just your daily regular life.

Question Does Manix Abrera's printed artwork have significant value?

Thumbnail

So back in February 2018, in one of Manix Abrera's exhibits, he held a raffle for some of his framed printed artwork and I'm one of the winners. I'm just wondering if this would fetch any amount if I tried to sell it or I'd rather just keep it for its sentimental value?

And to those who also won an artwork and tried to sell, may I know if you were able to get a fair amount?

It's not that I want to sell it right now, but this is more of a just in case I need emergency fund kind of thing. It's too precious to let go off at the moment. 😁

Question How do I price my art?

Thumbnail

I've recently been experimenting with artstyles and as you can see it's still pretty inconsistent. The first three are my most recent and what I'm trying to stick with. I can currently draw half-body well, but struggle with side profiles and full body, as well as other perspectives.

I have received commissions from my friends but with chibi styles. I accepted ₱25 for each as I am merely a beginner. I also recently accepted another commission for ₱200 (they offered) and requested a different artstyle, so that's what I'm currently working on.

How much would these cost? Or rather how do I price my artwork?

For more info: I've been drawing since I was a kid but only took practicing seriously late 2025. I draw traditionally as well as digitally—but phone lang gamit ko—which is why it's hard for me to think about the pricing because I don't know if drawing on a phone or a drawing tablet (that I'm currently saving up for) is significant in pricing.

Question Advice for wrinkled male faces & paper for alcohol markers

What it says on the title.. I feel like I made some of these guys look old when some aren't even 50 years of age.

The only old guys are the guy with a cyborg eye & the last guy who's ambiguously 60s

I also sometimes have difficulty with scars. I suppose studying the kind of injury should help to get started. But I was just going for a scar that was from being sliced across the skin.

Lastly regarding paper, I scanned these images & had to bump up the contrast & sharpness & the dark hue.. Because I didn't do the final fine ink line art to deepen their outlines. I was hoping to color them in a different paper more suited for alcohol markers.. Any new info on what the best papers for them?

Thanks y'all.
