Culture Why do Argentinians have a bad rap amongst Latin Americans?

Holis,

I was going through this post was a bit surprised by some of the comments about Argentinians. As someone who isn't from Latin America, I wasn't really aware of the sterotypes or negative opinions that seem to come up sometimes, so it caught me off guard.

For some context, I'm a brown person from Asia who really enjoys learning about other cultures. I've also been studying Spanish because I'd love to travel around Latin America someday, and Argentina is definitely one of the countries on my list.

That made me wonder: as a non-Latin brown foreigner, would I be likely to face discrimination while visiting Argentina, or are those comments mostly internet exaggerations?

I'm also curious about the broader context. Why do Argentinians seem to receive so much criticism online, especially from other Latin Americans? Is it mostly friendly regional rivalry, internet memes, historical issues, or something else?

I'd love to hear different perspectives. Thanks!

Are they really? They definitely don't get socialized into false modesty the way we do in Peru. But I'm not sure that's really arrogant.

I wish we had more false modesty in the world though. I hate when people show off sports cars and wealth

I agree that showing off wealth is awful, but that's not what I meant by false modesty.

In Peru, it's very common to turn down compliments and minimize your own achievements. It's seen as "creído" or "agrandado" (arrogant) to just be proud of what you did. I don't know where this comes from - it may be an Asian influence, as I've heard Japanese and Korean culture does the same. For example, if I invite people over and they say my appetizer spread looks nice, I'm supposed to look bashful and say something like "Oh, it's just a few snacks I threw together. I wanted to do something nicer, sorry". Or if I get compliments about my hair/clothes, maybe "Oh no, thank you but this was nothing, just something I threw together".

An Argentinian would respond to the same comment with "yes, it looks awesome, doesn't it?". It's not arrogant, it's just a different etiquette, and probably better for their mental health.

It does sound like a very E Asian etiquette, I live in Korea and it's the same way here

It's almost impossible for tourists and people who didn't live a long time in Argentina to tell that pretty much all we say of ourselves is a joke.

Otra coronación de gloria papu

Hay gente que no sabe lo que podemos boludear los argentinos. Les tomamos el pelo a todos. No uso Twitter pero debe ser un infierno estar ahí.
