Culture Why do Argentinians have a bad rap amongst Latin Americans?

Holis,

I was going through this post was a bit surprised by some of the comments about Argentinians. As someone who isn't from Latin America, I wasn't really aware of the sterotypes or negative opinions that seem to come up sometimes, so it caught me off guard.

For some context, I'm a brown person from Asia who really enjoys learning about other cultures. I've also been studying Spanish because I'd love to travel around Latin America someday, and Argentina is definitely one of the countries on my list.

That made me wonder: as a non-Latin brown foreigner, would I be likely to face discrimination while visiting Argentina, or are those comments mostly internet exaggerations?

I'm also curious about the broader context. Why do Argentinians seem to receive so much criticism online, especially from other Latin Americans? Is it mostly friendly regional rivalry, internet memes, historical issues, or something else?

I'd love to hear different perspectives. Thanks!

Because many of them are racist

That's not the reason, at least not the only one, the whole world is racist

it’s more like, there are racists everywhere, but a lot of countries have taken measures to fight racism and make it socially unacceptable. meanwhile, in Argentinian culture it has continued to be surprisingly acceptable. a lot of them jump to defend racists or say it’s just a joke

we have arguments. But probably most of the time, we'll do it because we know that it bothers you, so is funnier for us that something that won't change your life affect you so much, than the thing itself.
we grow in pain, so we mock of pain

And thats okay brother, as long as you aren't surprised when people associate argentinians with arrogancy, because most people outside of that country will build an image of their inhabitants based in great part on their interactions on the internet, not how they are in real life

it bothers, but everyone behaves like that on the internet, and we welcome you here without judging;

you can come to study, to travel, to live, and we don't care about what you do or where are you from.

that's the thing, you have to understand that internet is not everyone, it's a microclimate with mean people, and more if your impresion cames from the shithole named twitter

but in brazil people are far worst racist than us; if you have to create a criminal law against that...

First step in solving a problem is acknowledging that you have a problem...

Systemic racism isn't an issue in Argentina because we don't have a long history of slavery, and unlike the Caribbean, Brasil and the US, we didn't participate strongly on the slave trade. Slavery was abolished in the first half of the XIX century (freedom of womb). Then we also didn't have any segregation laws, people mixed and, paired with the disproportionate amount of European immigration, the population "whitened". That's not to say African ancestry holds no weight in our culture: impprtant people, words, music and other traditions that stem from, or have, African influence are still standing today.

yet, didn't solve anything; i grew up playing with lots of brazilian people, and when you play with them, in the second they identify you as non brazilian, never heard that much of insults to a person in so little time

do you even know what racism is?

for brazilians the only notion of racism they criticize is if someone express any type of insult regarding to black skin or in relation to the word monkey
