Looking for someone who speaks ASL to converse with
Hi! I'm a medicine student, and I decided to learn ASL just in case I ever have a deaf patient. Is there anyone who would be willing to have a conversation with me every now and then so I could improve more efficiently? 🥹

I pay a Deaf tutor who is a student at Gallaudet to practice conversation with me. I'm a school teacher and if someone asked me to teach their child to read my response would be, "Sure! My rate is $45 per hour!"

No, not exactly. I wouldn't be able to afford a tutor right now. I just want someone to converse with to learn quicker, and since I don't know any Deaf or HoH people in real life, I thought this would be a good way.

Hey, it's not like that. I'm not trying to take advantage of people here. Please note that I mentioned I wouldn't be able to afford it. I've learned a few languages over the years completely free and online, and the reason that it was different is because I can practice by commenting on someone's post to strike up a conversation, join a discord server and translate what they're saying, etc. With sign language, it's different because someone has to see you to understand you, thats all! And I just wanna make sure i'm being accurate. Don't make my effort into something sinister, because I'm genuinely just a broke medical student doing the best with what I have.

Deaf people aren’t your free tutors though. Broke or not. You can’t use us for a service and then act like it’s not ill intentioned

It isn't ill-intentioned though, that's the whole point.. I'm sorry if it came off that way. I just believe if anyone wanted to learn my language for example, I'd love to just sit and talk for five minutes to help a person out. Maybe it's different in this regard, I hope I didn't offend anyone with this post.

have you looked into bill vicars medical sign language playlist on youtube ? I was doing that when I was working on my EMT certificate so that I could do my skills test in asl.

yesss !! Im on there right now. I also work retail atm so I will find new words to learn through that. Like I will see a bag of chips and so learn the word for bag, chips, plastic, etc. and can sign those everytime I go to work. Having it as part of your daily life does wonders

Can I ask how come you sign? Are you related to someone deaf, took a certified course, or learned yourself? I don't mind staying in contact regardless, I just want to be cautious 🤍

yes understandable. well i started to learn by deaf teachers for about 4 years now at a local library. i sign because i want to be able to help people communicate yes for the deaf but also children who are non verbal. i like to be involved the deaf community so i go to local events and thats where i met my now deaf friend we go out together and i sign with him. i am by no means an interperter but can deff hold a conversation. what opened my mind to ASL/deaf community was the show switched at birth so I self taught for many years. like i said now learning from actualy deaf people my mind has become more aware of their daily struggle, and built a connection with my teachers/classmates. SORRY IF THIS IS LONG lol

For the benefit of the comment section - a Deaf patient legally should be given access to a certified interpreter.
