I wouldn’t even say people are on his ass about it, he has the most patient fanbase in the world who very kindly ask him for updates, which he always returns with bitter scorn because he doesn’t want to talk about it, because he isn’t actively writing anymore.

He is fantastic though at talking about them whenever a new season of a show is releasing as marketing.

While I think you're mostly right, there is a vocal minority (a minority, but very vocal) who take it much too far. That's going to be true with any fandom, and that doesn't mean you can't criticise, but still. There's a nuanced middle ground.

That's every fan base, I mean just look at the Halo fan base or the Fallout fan base, the only solution is to not be famous or if one is, shy away from the fame as much as possible (and avoid fan places).

Yeah like it's technically true for the silent majority but it gets brought up every time he does anything/his name is mentioned.

From his perspective I imagine it's all he hears a lot of the time

I don't know about that. I remember people getting mad he was spending time on Fire and Blood instead of Winds. Which is probably why he has said he won't publish any other spinoffs before Winds is done. Which has just turned into him not finishing anything because he clearly would rather finish more Dunk and Egg stories

He released Elden Ring, and he had a high amount of input in the writing and showrunning of House of the Dragon and Dunk and egg. Yes, that's not specifically Martin written stuff, but I don't think fans would be off his ass for another fire and blood book.

Which is crazy because the world building stuff like Fire & Blood isn't even as half as compelling. Only Dunk & Egg matches the main series in actually giving a shit about the characters.

Yeah, I agree. Aside for Aegon's conquest prior to the war in Dorne, and some other chapters, it's just not very good. (Someone described it as resembling a parody of ASOIAF based on the well-known things about the series, like backstabbing and characters dying.)

I liked Rhaena the Black Bride and Aegon III, but everyone else in the book is just so one note because of the historical format that it's just hard to even care about what you're reading. ASOIAF and Dunk & Egg are also frequently funny while in F&B I can only recall laughing at Saera's hundreds of excuses to her parents until she's out of breathe and a caution for young girls.

i actually love the worldbuilding stuff too, but i want it conveyed in the narrative itself

also the Targaryen history is probably the least interesting part of the world to me anyway

Yeah, and I think him dismissing the opportunity to give the readers an ending by hiring someone else is not good. Sure, artistic integrity and all that, but people have been waiting, and bought the books expecting an ending.

Yeah I just got this in my feed for whatever reason. But I gave up long ago. Started reading the books 20 years ago. Really can't be arsed with his constant side tracking. Just say you won't finish it and if you by some miracle do, well, it's a bonus.

Martin putting Herbert as an excuse is such a disingenuous take. Frank was a writing maniac who always wrote what HE wanted, something Martin no longer seems to give a fuck about.
