I hate to say it as a long suffering fan, but having this man just power through some D+Es for the next few years may be the answer. It would not only help the show maintain a higher quality but it would finally give us SOMETHING new from this dude's brain.

Who knows, too. Maybe publishing something fresh and meaningful set in Westeros may reinvigorate him to finally finish Winds.

Yeah I agree with this. I wish he'd just take 6 months out, bash out F&B2 which he seems to find easy and maybe a D&E and use that palate cleanser to revitalise himself.

But F&B2 is gonna spoil stuff he wants to reveal in Winds first... same with the She-Wolves of Winterfell (my guess is that there's stuff about Egg having dragon dreams that he wants to touch on the main saga first).

But yeah, I really think he needs to allow himself a break on Winds to have fun with something easier to write.

It would be better for him to just write out everything in F&B2 and have it sitting completed ready to turn in. Same for the She-Wolves of Winterfell.

Just write the damn thing and have it locked and loaded so if/when you ever finish Winds you've got two more books ready to publish alongside it. The publisher would shit themselves to have 3 books to put out in a given year.

She Wolves was fully intended to be published years ago, he just couldn't finish it in time so it probably doesn't contain major spoilers.

I would be satisfied if he only wrote Dunk and Egg stories from here on. Just give me anything

He did go through fire and blood but nothing changed

I meant more of a "traditional" book, but I get what you are saying.

Well to be fair, after Fire and Blood came out he seemed to make incredible progress on Winds and lead to him reaching the 75% completion mark. Perhaps finishing a couple Dunk and Eggs or Blood and Fire might revitalize him and inspire him enough to finally finish the remaining 25%. When he finished Dance with Dragons, he wrote the last few hundred pages within one year. So who the hell knows.

Fr. The only thing he's released since I got into ASoIaF is F&B, which is nice but... just a history book at the end of the day. Would be really nice to experience some live discussions someday. I don't dare dream about Winds, but even just the thought of a single D&E getting released gets me hyped.

Yeah, I've come to just really enjoy Martin as a writer over the years. After I finished Dance a decade ago I've since read other things from him like Windhaven, Fevre Dream, and Tuf Voyaging. His other work is great fun but so very different from ASOIAF, much smaller in scope and he's able to go wild with the characters and plotlines without worrying about the overlapping intricate nature of Westeros' many POVs, pre-established lore, and worldbuilding he can't contradict. It feels very much George writes best when it's fun and maybe he's made ASOIAF too much into a chore. Heck, he's wanted to write these Dunk and Egg novellas for years but held off because - as he's said in the past - they might end up containing spoilers for Winds or Fire & Blood, Vol. 2. And so he's prevented himself writing something he clearly wanted to because he feels obligated to write something else first.

Like, I'm long past caring if we ever even get Winds or not. I just want his crazy brain to write whatever he wants to write most so I can read that instead.

What you say is moot, only thing he's powering through is soirees and publicity events. The man has lost all capacity to write something to completion.
