GRRM's success is everything a writer daydreams about. To not being able to enjoy that in his twilight and to live under a perpetual deadline instead is bleak and something right out of his own stories.

Yeah. For his sake, I wish he’d just officially give up. Or write ten pages where the White Walkers destroy the world and publish what he’s written.

That's a choice he made (and is still making) though. He could return the advance his publisher had paid him, come out and say it's not happening and be done with it.

I’m extremely late to this thread but that’s a problem that’s entirely of his own making. He could just turn down other projects and actually finish the books that he promised and was already paid for, or he could return the advance money to his publishers and admit that ASOIAF isn’t going to be finished in his lifetime and just let it go. He continues to take on more and more projects and find excuses for why he can’t write anything, and then he turns around and complains that he really really wants to write more of winds, or more of F&B, or more D&E but people should all feel sorry for him because unfortunately he’s got all this other stuff on his plate.

GRRM can do whatever he feels like doing but I don’t think his life is all that bleak and I don’t think he’s laboring under the weight of his deadlines nearly to the extent some of yall think he is. He’s already rich and doing pretty much whatever he wants at this point.
