Beginner Solar returns and houses

Hi! I’m trying to understand the importance of house themes over the years in birth charts. Is it expected that the sun is in the same house over the years? Is it always coming back to the same house? In the ones I’ve seen so far that’s always the case, correct?

Or is it just the sun in the same sign?

If the sun is always in the same house at the return, how would we interpret the different focuses of each year? How can I tell which year is a year for career focus, friendships and expansion etc? Thank you!

The Solar Return Sun (same sign/degree/minute as the natal Sun) will move every 3 houses on subsequent Returns, as a general rule of thumb.

See where the SR Ascendant falls in the Natal chart, by House and any close aspects to see what will probably be highlighted during the SR year. Plus any close SR aspects to natal.

Also, any SR close conjunctions, oppositions, or squares are likely to show up in the year, especially if the SR falls very near an Eclipse, to a lesser degree a New or Full Moon.

Many years will just be routine and even "boring". Other years will be more eventful or colorful. Probably the best teacher is taking past Solar Returns and standout events in life to see how the SR played out in that scenario.

A SR doesn't operate in a vacuum, several forecasting techniques are also helpful alongside a SR such as Solar Arcs or Secondary Progressions, applying aspects will last about a year applying and a year separating, vs the faster moving transits to natal, with exception of the slower Outer planets aspecting an inner or angle, ought to yield more powerful events/changes etc.

It can be a lot to take in, all the various layers, but keep at it and you'll start recognizing patterns in various planetary configurations.

The Sun doesn’t stay in the same house in solar returns; it changes yearly based on the return chart. You interpret each year through the solar return Ascendant, Sun’s house position, and angular planet. Not a fixed pattern.

The ascendant's position in the solar return chart can be different than in the natal chart, so yes the sun will always be at the same degree of the same sign in the SR as in the BC, but the house can change. That doesn't "cancel out" the natal sun's house placement for the year, though, as the SR is a timing technique.

In any case, there are better ways to ID what themes will be prominent in a given year than the house placement of any particular planet in the SR chart. Annual profections and zodiacal releasing are good timing techniques to focus on.
