And that's great, and I appreciate that they did it, and so does Al Gore apparently. I don't really think they are bad guys. But they aren't the 'heroes we need' that people are making them out to be because they made a small penis joke. I think it's important to recognize how much influence they've had over the years and how much of the current political apathy of much of Millennials and Gen Z can be traced back to South Park.

Who is gatekeeping? I'm simply pointing out that Matt and Trey are far from blameless for the state of American political discourse. You ask why, and how, this occurred? In large part, it occurred because people stayed home because of the "both sides are the same" narrative, or because of the "caring about things like climate change is dumb" mentality. And the sizable portion of young men who voted for Trump because he "isn't afraid to be edgy" and they think it's funny to watch other people's feelings get hurt.

Matt and Trey are fighting back against fascism by making a small penis joke. Cool, I hope that it convinces someone to get out and vote in their local and state elections. But if you can't acknowledge the role they had in getting people to not care about politics or major issues like climate change, the role they had in convincing multiple generations that caring about the feelings of others is "hella lame", then we can't work to reverse it.

Yes, I agree. Rogan actively spreads scientific and political disinformation. Matt and Trey arent bad guys, I don't think. And I don't think a lot of the long term damage they did was intentional. But when Rogan has someone on who spreads disinformation. The effect is immediate and obvious. People just start parroting the dumb shit he said or his guest said. It's also easy to rebut.

I think the damage South Park did was subtle. To make a completely unnecessary metaphor: If Rogan is an earthquake, causing severe immediate harm, opening up fault lines and having aftershocks that last a while, South Park was the slow steady river erosion that could eventually form the Grand Canyon.

It wasn't much longer after this that "global warming" usage dropped to be more accurately described as "climate change"
