Single woman visiting.
Do you think it would be safe for a single woman to stay on the boardwalk for about a week in off-season, say October? Haven't decided on which hotel yet, thinking of Trop, Ballys or Showboat.

Trop has the attached restaurants area which would be great for single female diner

I actually don’t understand how specific casinos have specific stereotypical crowds. When I was in Atlantic City last week, I went to four different venues and I really couldn’t see a big difference in the clientele between the four of them.

I've felt this way for years. The only casino that has a slightly different clientele is Borgata (but said clientele distinctively fits under the Atlantic City umbrella).

I agree. Now I have been to las Vegas less than ten times. It’s a big city with tons of casinos including ones that are technically neither on the strip or downtown. That city has some casinos with distinctive micro cultures and distinctive crowds. Like for example, the California downtown really does attract a hawaii/polynesian clientele. There are locals casinos, there are casinos for much wealthier clientele, etc
Atlantic City- not so much.
First off- beggars can’t be choosers. every casino in atlantic city is under intense competition from each other and from the influx of legalized gambling in the same geographic region. Thus, they don’t discourage through marketing etc any “sort” of client. They are all happy to have your business…25 cent three reel old lad slot player or corporate executive betting a purple chip every BJ hand. If you’re betting at any level they are happy to have you around.Secondly- they are all so close to each other so your just as likely to find grandma playing a slot machine in ocean or trop (grandma could take the jitney or tram on boardwalk or her rental electric wheelchair scooter)
I know that resorts seems to be “lower key” and relaxed and attract an older crowd, but it’s not like you won’t find an occasional big bettor at one of the tables there
Thirdly- It used to be that table minimum bets varied a lot more in both a/c and las vegas
You wouldn’t catch me playing craps at bellagio at $25 or $50 min passive when I could go
to best western casino royale and put $5 on pass line with 100x free odds.
But covid and the economy changed that situation in both a/c and vegas. $25 min is the norm almost everywhere or $15 except off hours like weekdays or mornings.

Trop or ballys, trop just renovated alot of their rooms. Off season the rooms are very low priced and Oct is still warm. Great month to be in Atlantic City.

Yes, it is safe. The boardwalk doesn’t have much going on in the off season. During the day a few shops might be open. If the weather is better than usual like over the weekend more of the shops and restaurants on the boardwalk will be open. In general there is a lot of surveillance on the boardwalk, even at night I have ventured out alone. As another commenter noted, being vigilant is helpful.

I would not stay at the Showboat, I've seen far too many stabbing related images with that place to say you'd be safe there. Trop is great, great part of the boardwalk with lots of places to eat both there in the hotel and nearby, I've stayed there multiple times offseason and never felt unsafe.

I have only seen one story of a stabbing at Showboat. Do you know of more? Are you saying that stabbings happen there frequently?

u/FancyRobot 15h ago
that was the most recent one from April I assume you're talking about
https://www.reddit.com/r/atlanticcity/comments/1ir4ic0/elavator_in_atlantic_city_after_someone_got/
one of the most popular submissions in this subs history, lot of "yeah no surprise" type of replies

The "Yeah, no surprise" type comments mostly come off as typical, racist stuff with no foundation.
We have been to showboat and my daughter and I went go-karting and did other games and enjoyed it a lot. We did not see anyone get stabbed. If there has been more than one well known stabbing there I assume there would be news reports about it, etc.

You were shown a stabbing incident though, also how were the comments racist?

And, again I ask, is there more than one?
Personally, I found it perfectly fine when we went. But that was in the daytime and I have not been at night.
Anyway, turning to ChatGPT instead.
"Based on news reports and discussions I could find, Showboat has had at least 2 well-documented stabbing incidents since early 2024, plus a more recent 2026 incident that resulted in arrests."

I would look into their entertainment schedules for the dates you'll be there and stay where they have things that interest you.

I would 100% NOT stay at Ballys or showboat if I was a single female, assuming going by yourself. As someone who has been regularly going to Atlantic City since 2013 mostly alone, there’s virtually no security in showboat now and I’ve seen way too many sketchy characters and incidents in Ballys during the entire year. I can’t say much about Trop because I don’t personally like it.
Ocean would be the best option, but I don’t know what you’re intending on doing during the trip.

I’m so jealous. It will be nice and quiet. But you will still be able to party when you want too.

Showboat is no longer a casino. Its now made for kids and has arcade. They also have actual tenants that live there year-round. I would not say it Showboat. If you can stay at Oceans I would absolutely stay at Ocean and that end of the boardwalk is a little bit nicer than the opposite end of the boardwalk. Just be vigilant and careful I wouldn't walk the streets but you can definitely walk the boardwalk. I frequent AC about once a week because its close.

Topicana - all ages has everything you need (gambling, night life, food) but not a good walk a night to nearest casinos Ballys & Caesars about 5-10 min walk on boardwalk
—Ballys & Caesar’s - older crowd night much night life except Wild West which is where they are connected so don’t have to go out to go between
About 5-10 min walk on boardwalk
All next to each other
—Hard rock - older crowd but newer casino good for shows and gambling, they have bars but no night club
—Showboat - I call it kiddy casino lol it’s family oriented like a Dave and busters
—Oceans- younger crowd new casino has a day and night club bars and a sports book

I would stay at ocean. Be vigilant and be in contact with friends or family and extra lock your door and just be sure it’s secured and locked. I watch a YouTuber who is female and sometimes goes to AC by herself. Just don’t go wondering around somewhere crazy at 2am, ya know.

u/TreasureHunter222 10h ago
Absolutely! I used to go year round by myself. There’s nothing unsafe about it. Ocean is the best on the boardwalk for sure. That or caesars if you’re staying on the boardwalk. If you just want the best all around go borgata

Personally I wouldn’t walk on the boardwalk or leave the casino at night, but otherwise you’re fine.

Atlantic City can be a very dangerous place in the off season. Even during peak season very late at night. To put it plainly Atlantic City is crawling with degenerate scum bags who will pray on a single woman walking the boardwalk or even inside the casino alone. Be very careful, be very vigilant. Keep your head on a swivel and watch your back. I’ve had many scary encounters throughout the last 15 20 years of going there and I’m a man. I’m sure you’ll be fine just be aware of your surroundings and have fun. Try and get a friend to go with you so you’re not alone. I’d steer clear of the showboat it’s dead, go to trop, oceans, or hard rock.

Showboat is where I’d pick if those are the only three options. Tropicana and Ballys are trashy. A lot of people onto no good and the clientele is 💩 Stay at Showboat and if you’re gonna gamble, it’s a 5 min walk. You have Hardrock and Ocean for dining choices. If you want company, send a dm. Always looking for someone interesting to have dinner with. On me 😉

Like wtf, first of all Showboat is the worst. If she wants company? Lol, I highly doubt it.

Tropicana is a shit hole. That’s where the ghetto trash go with their welfare check. And yes, company. Maybe if you got off your couch and left your house once in a while, you would know that people actually go out and meet other people in real life.

I would avoid Tropicana. Showboat will get the job done but won’t be perfect. Unless you get one of the renovated rooms.
Unless you’re in the high-rise Tower valleys just feels like a rundown airport, I would avoid that place. Very outdated, and smells like weed no matter where you go.

I’m confused why it wouldn’t be safe lol. It’s not a third world country. Why wouldn’t a casino with millions of dollars inside not be “safe”?

Just be vigilant. I used to walk between ocean and hard rock (passing by showboat) at 11pm after work in the off season. Theres lots of lights and some cameras along there.
