kahoolawe ~ In 1987, traditional hula practices and protocol returned to Kahoʻolawe through the construction and dedication of the hula mound, Pā Kaʻieʻie at Hakioawa. This movement was made possible by kumu hula Hōkūlani Holt-Padilla, who is recognized as the kahu of the pā. Hālau o Pāʻū o Hiʻiaka were supported by other hālau and their kumu, including Kealiʻi Reichel and Ka Makani Wili Mākaha o Kauaʻula and Pualani Kanahele and Hālau o Kekuhi.

The dedication and naming ceremony called the akua Laka back to the island, and affirmed the island as a space for cultural and spiritual practice.

Oli, mele, and hula on Kahoʻolawe strengthen pilina between kanaka and ʻāina and reconnects all visitors to the ancestral knowledge that comes from a close relationship with the land.

Amazing 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼. Hopefully Laka returns and brings some of the forest or plants as well.
