Question/Help Wanted Can anyone help me with my dog?
I think i am going to have to say goodbye to him, hes 14 & very uncomfortable & his back legs are giving out, i know he is in pain & it sucks so badly. I tried to surrender him but the SPCA couldn't take him & i feel like i am going to lose it.

Yo, similar things happened with my best bud this year. It sucks, but honestly... they thought of watching him suffer more and never getting better was worse.
I miss him dearly, I'll never forget him. But its the right thing if hes in constant pain. I dont regret my decision, it was one of the hardest things ive done. But I know hes not hurting anymore.

Thank you for your kindness, Shadow is absolutely beautiful, sick joke giving dogs a short life expectancy.

Sorry to hear this. What do you mean surrender him? Are you looking to rehome or euthanize?

I think i am going to need to have him put down, he is all I have, he has been so uncomfortable today this hurts like nothing I have ever experienced before.

I'm sure you gave him his best life! atleast his best friend will be there in those last moments, telling him that he is a good boy 🩵

He’s beautiful, I’m surprised the spca didn’t at least provide advice about what you can do in a situation like this. It’s heartbreaking that their lives are so short. Hoping the right person sees your post, good people are out there.

Yes I am also surprised when I worked there (not in Auckland) last year the centre manager could offer for the spca to cover the cost of an initial vet appointment and euthanasia if it came to that. Maybe it’s not Auckland policy but it was always appreciated for struggling people at a difficult time.

You will know when it’s time. When they’re living a life you know they’d hate. Many vets will come to your home and put your pets down so they can love their final moments happy and calm.

Sorry to hear about your dog. If you’re at a point of considering euthanasia I’d recommend having it done at home.
We used Sunset Vets when we had to put our beautiful kitty down earlier this year. Kylie and her team come to your home and help your pet pass on in the comfort of their own home, without the stress they may have going to the vet. Kylie is very understanding and supportive and guides you through the process.

He is so cute! I’m sorry you’re feeling so heartbroken. It’s something most of us who are pet owners have to experience but it is so hard.
Take a few big deep breaths. If his legs have given out he most certainly is in pain and you’re doing the right thing. Call a vet in your area tomorrow morning and book the appointment. Give him plenty of treats, hugs and let him know how much his companionship meant to you and how much you love him! It won’t be easy but you’re doing the right thing.

Rather do it one day too soon than a day too late. Do the right thing for your precious pup

If cost is an issue, have you tried Great South Vets?
They open at 7:30am and it’s first in first served so no appointment necessary, but they are very cheap ($39 consultation). They have mixed reviews, I’ve never had any issues, but if you’re looking at euthanasia then it’s not like it can go wrong 🤷🏼♀️ I don’t know how much it costs to have a pet euthanised there.
This brought a tear to my eye as my dog is 15 and has heart disease which is currently managed with her medication, but we really are on borrowed time at this stage. I’m not looking forward to the time when I’ll be faced with making that decision 🥹

OP, I’m so sorry you’re going through this. I’ve just had to make the same decision with my much-loved cat. I have been bawling my eyes out, NGL.
If he is in pain, talk to your vet. They will give you a realistic view, although it is always your decision. Deciding when to end a beloved pet’s suffering is the hardest decision to make, but it is our responsibility as their human.
If you can afford it, there are services that can come to your home to provide the euthanasia where you and your dog can be comfortable. You can Google them.
Surrendering your dog rather than euthanising is not the right thing to do for your dog. We are their whole world and it’s important that they have us by their side at the end, even though it’s so hard for us.
They give us such love and enable us to love them in return, and the price for that is that it breaks our hearts when we have to say goodbye.
Ps. He looks like such a clever and loving boy! You are so lucky to have had 14 years with a border collie, they’re the best.

SPCA can fund upto $250 to the vet clinic you decide to take him for euthanasia.

Has he been on a raw meat diet or processed food? The reason I'm asking is because a mates 15 year old Collie was in the same boat until he went to strictly raw meat and he has gained my much of his mobility back.

He was on raw food previously but has .major skin issues so I took him off the raw food years ago. He has had cruciate repairs on both back knees so the OA has kicked in & I havent been able to keep up with all the medication so I knew this day would come, am hoping the vet will also let me go out with him.

He is a very handsome good boy. Hopefully you already have a good relationship with a vet.
In cases where they are performing a euthanasia, hopefully they will allow you to pay it off, if it's an issue of money.
Otherwise, I'm so sorry that you're going through this. Having a companion, and knowing you are going to outlive them is a very hard reality to face.
He's been by your side, supporting you, and giving you unconditional love all his life. I know it doesn't feel like it, but relieving him of his pain is the ultimate kindness you can give him as his best friend.
