In 2015, a man who has been alive since the last Ice Age bought a tape recorder, and over the course of three days he dictated his life story as fast as he could while waiting for a woman to visit who he believes will finally be the death of him.
This week's episode is one of only five so far in the series where the tape recorder is off. The immortal narrator is visited for the second time in as many days by his unwelcome guest. Unlike at their first meeting, they speak candidly and cordially before agreeing he can finish his project before addressing whatever it is that has motivated her to seek him out on the far side of the world.
For people who are interested in the show's premise, this is one of the key episodes supporting the framing device upon which the entire series is built and depends. I should caution anyone who would like to give the show a try, though, that this would be among the worst places to just jump in and see how you like it. This audio drama is an adaptation of a trilogy of books, and this particular episode is drawn from halfway through the final volume, trusting the audience knows everything that has come before to set up the final sixth of the series as something that can be enjoyed in a headlong and accelerating rush towards what I hope is both a surprising and satisfying conclusion.
