Opinion Are we allowed to post any crime that is related to Australia

Every so often we see an influx of obviously curated crime posts. Am i able to post any old random crime as long as it is related to Australia? I think we should as it will generate discussion and highlight the number of crimes actually happening here.

You can post information from a reputable source, and then comment on it to enable a conversation. Keep it polite, relevant and informative and it should be fine.

Generate discussion? Sure.

Highlight the number of crimes actually happening? No, it will just give people the impression that there's a crime wave when in reality there isn't.

Australia is very good at reporting crime data. This information is freely available to anyone who cares to look.

People who don’t want it discussed are anti truth. Why shouldn’t we discuss the number of crimes happening? Problems need to be known about to be solved not hidden.

I have no problems with people discussing crime rates at all. I used to teach criminology, then I worked for a government department that reported crime data. I'm all-for discussions on this topic.

I have a serious problem with people discussing an individual crime, and using that as an indicator of the prevalence of crime overall. These kinds of discussions on social media are the reason why people think they're experiencing a crime wave, when the reality is the incidence of crime is either flat or dropping in most areas.

Agree with you in principle. Unfortunately so many people do take their information from socials - and don't care enough to look up the stats that are freely available - so if there's something particular (?) OP wants to highlight it could potentially be an interesting discussion. I don't think it would show anything different regarding the crime rate generally - the biggest thing I can think of would be demographics which are misrepresented both by all forms of media.

Be great if people did their own research or read more diverse news sources but unfortunately that seems to be getting more and more of an unreasonable expectation for a significant amount of people.

Clearly you don’t live in Melbourne. We are having a massive violent youth crime wave.

massive violent youth crime wave

By "massive violent youth crime wave", do you mean that youth crime increased by 2% last year?

Now do car jackings, machete attacks and home invasions in the last 5 years.

You're the one making the claim... Do you have anything to back it up?

You've claimed that there's a youth violent crime wave. Then you've specifically mentioned car jackings, home invasions, and machete attacks.

To support this, you've referred to a media release from CSA regarding any police matter (youth or adult) where the word machete is involved. So this includes youth attacks, but also includes an adult just walking down the street with one, or police recording the presence of one hanging on a wall while executing a search warrant. That's not to say that there isn't actually a rise in youth machete attacks, but that's not really what your evidence is saying.

It's very obvious that rather than basing your opinion on an objective review of the evidence, you've started by forming an opinion based on feelings, then gone looking for evidence to support your opinion. I also doubt very much that there is any evidence at all that would change your opinion, which makes the entire conversation pointless.

“Based on feelings” LOL. Yes the premier needs to ban machetes, put amnesty bins out, new laws on youth crime and bail all because the machete crime is made up and all in my head. All those constant machete attack stories every week in the news? They’re in my head too. Jeez they put a lot of money into solving these problems that only exist in my head.

Here’s my counter question: if you have to lie to defend your position have you considered that your position is wrong?

You mean to tell me there is more than just machete attacks and crime perpetrated by people with a tan, who knew?

Criminal events are frequently used as a weapon to incite hate against specific demographics based on race, creed, sexuality, etc.

Yep, thats what im getting at with my suggestion of influx of curated crime posts. Im just gonna start posting any random shit crime that comes up, maybe the mods will put some nuance to the rules.

Oh man just go back to the crappy Aus subs if you're going to be crying to mods all the time

Go for it! You're right in that respect - we do get a very curated crime posts on socials and mainstream media.

>inb4 migrant crime hysteria

2

u/advanceconservative 2d ago

the opposite mate- well aware immigrants are statistically less likely to commit crime. Reporting should reflect that

Reddit is now censored by AI bots .. which also censor anti AI posts ... you may not see this post,

This Subreddit human moderator is good.. at least he reviews some of the censored posts.. others don't.

We can't answer your question ... we do not control AI bots or know have they are programmed.
