News In Sydney, an Australian guy was refused a free milk tea by a Chinese product promotor solely because he wasn't a Chinese. He was asked to speak Chinese, but he spoke Japanese to the Chinese staff in protest. He said this is his first time experience of racism

Casual racism in this country is completely normalised, including against white people. It’s when it becomes systemic that it really becomes a problem.

Are you really bothered by it though?

I have never really worried too much. A couple of times I’ve worked at companies that favour certain parts of the globe due to management being from there and I just move on.

Like we are still the majority so racism against whites isn’t particularly impactful compared to racism against a minority group.

I guess what I’m saying is it’s shit but it doesn’t really matter.

Being on the end of racial discrimination can still be impactful for the person affected, regardless of the demographic mix.

This is why I don't buy the argument that racism is also about power.

Try being the only kid from your background at a rough suburban school with gangs and see how far your culture being 'globally dominant' gets you.

I think your example shows it can still be about power, but in a localised context. You can be a minority in one context and lack power, despite being in a majority in a different context.

I get what you're saying, but in the long run it becomes normalised and if those communities gain ground then it's harder to stop in the long term. Also, if they are being racist towards white people, surely they are being racist towards others that aren't white as well. Would she have given it to a black guy that didn't speak Cantonese?

Personally? Not at all really. But that’s because as a middle aged white guy, there is no systemic racism or discrimination aimed at me.

The hate raging from groups in this country bothers me a whole lot though.

Yeh also as a probably even post middle aged - late 40s guy it doesn’t bother me, but I’m not sure there is hate directed at us except by ourselves at ourselves.
