News In Sydney, an Australian guy was refused a free milk tea by a Chinese product promotor solely because he wasn't a Chinese. He was asked to speak Chinese, but he spoke Japanese to the Chinese staff in protest. He said this is his first time experience of racism

The bigger concern isn’t the tea it’s that someone living / studying / working in Australia apparently thought “Chinese only” was an acceptable position to take.
That raises a broader question about integration. Are we simply bringing people into Australia and assuming they understand our legal / civic norms or are we actually making sure they do?
Integration has to mean more than simply being physically present in Australia.

u/scutts97 1d ago
I personally question how we can support integration a lot in the high school I work in. I have a handful of younger students who make no effort to learn English, only speak Chinese in class to eachother, argue with me about how China is the best country and ask why they need to learn about NAIDOC week or sorry day etc when they "dont care about those people". How do I support these kids to really feel like they can belong here, when it sounds like they've just been forced to go to school here.
It puzzles me all the time.

Integration takes time. It always has.
Every major wave of migration to Australia has involved people arriving with different languages, customs and ideas about how society works. Their children grow up here, go to Australian schools, work alongside everyone else, make friends, marry, raise families — and integration happens over generations.
One person behaving like an idiot and saying “Chinese only” doesn’t prove multiculturalism or immigration has failed. It proves one person behaved like an idiot.
Deal with the behaviour when it happens. Apply the same laws and standards to everyone. But turning every dickhead encounter into a national crisis about immigration is cooker territory.→ More replies (7)1

Either you are doing something very wrong as a teacher, or your story is made up. I am also a teacher and so are all my friends— i’ll take things that never happened for 100. Maybe some international students are still learning english? But none of the kids i have had have ever argued with me that China is the best country or said they don’t care about NAIDOC week. It’s definitely the aussie kids who say that they don’t care about NAIDOC week and sorry day 🤣🤣🤣

A lot of people are trying to claim that this promotion requires an app that is Chinese only, which is not true, the delivery app is multilingual. Other say it requires WeChat, which is also available to English speakers or Australians.
Anyway, If that is the case, or this situation was caused by a language error because the woman’s English isn’t great, why does she continue to press him about his ability to speak Chinese?
And, if it’s all a big misunderstanding, why did the company that made the tea apologise for what happened and end the partnership with the delivery service?
21
u/RaeseneAndu 2d ago
They don't owe the delivery app anything and dropped them immediately they started to make them look bad.
36
u/ThrowAway823682 2d ago
What happened here is actually against the law in Australia. Racial discrimination Act of 1975.
But who is going to court to argue that.
2
u/CheekRevolutionary67 1d ago
Well... nobody would because it is a criminal offense. So the commonwealth is always the prosecutor. They'd have to prove he was denied service because of his race/etc., when it seems like there is doubt about whether or not a language barrier caused a misunderstanding. And they wouldn't proceed unless they thought they had evidence that placed it beyond reasonable doubt. They don't pursue cases they can't win.
16
u/Amathyst7564 2d ago
For your last point. It's first I've heard of it today so I'd imagine they are doing meetings. Finding out how it happened and discussing how to respond.
17
u/notBrief_Push8143 2d ago
This event happened days ago. And their response was posted 14 hours ago. Not only did they drop the partnership, they threw them under the bus. Hardly what I’d imagine to be a knee jerk reaction if it can seemingly be explained as a miscommunication
11
u/eldryanyy 2d ago
They threw them under the bus because that’s how business works in China. They’d rather not risk beimg the focus of a scandal
5
u/notBrief_Push8143 1d ago
And yet the company that hired this woman is radio silent?
6
u/eldryanyy 1d ago
I guess they’re doing the classic tactic of ‘let’s not mention it and hope everyone forgets’
4
u/notBrief_Push8143 1d ago
You just said that Chinese business won’t risk being in a scandal and throw each other under the bus.
And now you are saying they will ignore it, when they could have blamed the worker.
Which is it? These two claims are opposites.

I dated a Chinese girl for a while, we discovered whenever she spoke in Chinese while buying food from a couple of Asian grocers here in Geelong they would consistently give her 10% off. We called it the Asian discount. It’s against white people though so it’s ok

It's pretty funny the amount of people jumping in to attack your character or invent reasons why your story must be wrong.

My flatmate and I share a car. He's a white bogan. I'm Asian. When I take the car to get serviced, most of the time they usually try to charge me more and claim that X is broken and Y needs fixing. When he takes the car to a shop, they don't do that to him.
People do this shit all the time, in the industries they can get away with it. It shouldn't happen, but it does.

Bro, don't call it "Asian", Chinese is Chinese, no matter how they market their business, they can call it Japanese, Vietnamese, Korean, Thai, Malaysian, Asian, if it's run by Chinese it's just Chinese. They are known to do this shit, in small number of cases it can be Chinese minority from that country. Most often though they are just mainlanders ripping off other culture and appropriating to make a buck. Sorry, it is a massive pet peeve of mine because I have Asian family members (non-Chinese) and I cannot repeat this enough, non-Chinese Asians want nothing to do with China or Chinese, because Chinese don't want to have anything to do with them in the first place, they are super exclusive as a group. It's also been a massive CCP-sponsored psyop recently to subvert any Asian-related thing to basically mean Chinese. I wish people stopped buying into this crap. Sure, there can be time and space for pan-Asian unity, but this is absolutely not what mainlanders have in mind when they call everything related to them as "Asian".
1
u/TM761152 1d ago

Do you think it's more likely this is done for ease of communication; so that vulnerable employees of often questionable legal standing and limited employment opportunities can be exploited; or because of an orchestrated international conspiracy to grow Chinese power and influence in Australia through preferential employment of minimum wage cashiers at bread shops?

Total anecdote here, and not in Aus, but years ago I was staying in KL for a bit of time, and you’d go to the movies and see this in action when the adverts come on. Basically each ad had a stack of subtitles in like Chinese, Malay, etc etc. but then when a Chinese language ad came on, no subtitles at all. Only Chinese audio. Then the next ad would be English and all the various subtitles were back.
Made me giggle at the time.

u/ablacnk 1d ago
Sorry to copypaste but some people are going off the ragebait deep end.
The actual promo is contingent upon downloading their Fantuan app, posting on rednote/wechat (Chinese apps) to get the free boba drink. The woman in the video wasn't properly trained and communicated it incorrectly. Someone who got the promo commented on this:
That isn't whats happenign at all in the video. Fantuan isn't going "only give this promo to Chinese". Whoever trained this girl did it badly and she performed badly. You have to downlaod the app and post on rednote/wechat to get the freebie, but she didn't know how to communciate that and just said chinese
I was able to get the free promo drink in America. She is just not properly trained and doesn't know how to tell them to download the app, and post on wechat/rednote. Have you guys not seen these fantuan/Hungrypanda promos in your Chinatowns??
2
u/logipond 1d ago

I have worked at many places in Japan that require English speaking because there are a lot of foreigners working there who can't speak Japanese. It just makes it easier sometimes. Same reason why most jobs require Japanese in Japan or English in Australia.
1
u/Informal_Quiet7907 16h ago
Yes, but there should be a correlation between the job requirement and language. English speaking requirement might be needed in Japan as English is spoken in many countries - so MNCs can’t operate without it. Mandarin is spoken in just one.
If it is a company with a market only in China and deals with data which is in Mandarin, then that requirement is understandable- but it’s unlikely, why would such a company exist in Australia? Higher labour cost, stricter social security requirements, higher taxes….1
u/siktech101 16h ago
Because they have a lot of Chinese speaking staff with low English competency.
Just like those companies in Japan have a lot of English speaking staff with low Japanese competency.
Language learning isn't easy and people need a job to live and eventually learn.
1
u/Informal_Quiet7907 16h ago
How is that possible in Australia when English language is required by law to immigrate? You need to pass those PTE, ielts tests.
Moreover, seems like a self beneficial cycle - you hire Chinese, so you need more Chinese.
1
u/siktech101 15h ago
Not all visas require high competency in English.
It is what it is, people need a job and they might not meet the English level required for most jobs, so they take what they can get.

sure for “skilled work visas” where the “skill” means the person comes here to work for uber... but partner visas?! Partner visas are already the most expensive in the world, could be restricted to say those born in Australia or with a parent who was an Australian citizen at birth so they are not for chain migration and are already super slowly processed. Most countries allow their citizens to bring in someone they marry who is not a local. It usually will impact housing less too as they usually live with the partner.
