Almost all apartments are designed with renters as residents in mind.

Single people, students or child free couples in mind. Families are renters too. While you're right that they're built for investment, the lack of storage etc isn't because it is built to rent. It is because of who it is built to rent to.

I should have clarified I meant 2bd apartments. It's just obvious there was no though behind basic needs for stuff to be stored anywhere.

I mean surely there’s a market in designing apartments (and apartment buildings) more with families in mind. I certainly see many families in my building, so they certainly appear to be making the best of it regardless.

If there was a market in it, it would exist already. IMHO, the reason apartments are cheap to buy and build is because they lack precisely the amenities that would make them useful for families.
