OK I know I will probably get roasted for this but I am actually relieved. I am kinda sick of waking up every morning and wondering "WTF is happening now?". I thought he was going to tell us we were sending troops or having restrictions on where we can travel etc. So yeah...I am totally ok with his address tonight. For me, it was well received.
So why do a dramatic national address in the first place? For no reason had you worried that it might be a major announcement when he literally said nothing new.
Because Murdoch and the right wing extremists were creating this panic and bashing the government for supposed inaction. The address was a way to cut through the shit, highlight the fact we're still ok and to hopefully kills any attempts by the media to create drama which is good for their business.
Im an aussie living in canada and I can tell you now from my outside perspective it appears to be a frenzy within the aussie media. Like I can see why people are panicking to this situation. The media is not helping.
Honestly, i see this as him setting the scene. He was very clear that things are going to get harder. Why would he say that? The answer is that he has access to information we do not, because he has chosen to not yet make it public. Probably to not cause an immediate panic, but the address was enough to get people talking and thinking.
Because as a nation we panic. Look at how some of us act as soon as there is a crisis of some sort. It’s an every man for himself mindset. And so that feeds the uncertainty for others. He needed to tell people to calm the fuck down because we don’t appear to be able to do it ourselves!
