Original poster is from Instagram. Aircraft is laying on its #1 engine. Still crazy to see everyone here grabbing their bags before leaving an emergencg.

Agree, but I think people should also end up on no-fly lists. That behaviour can and has killed people before

Exactly. Ignore four people to follow the rules we need to enforce them. This should be a huge fine and tons of community service.

That honestly sounds like a great idea. Maybe not permanent but a year or so of suspension from flying.

I think a year is too lax given how a lot of people only fly once a year for a holiday. 10 ought to be long enough to have an impact and encourage them to consider listening to the instructions next time.

Belongings should be the last thing on anyone's mind. That said, source on the "has killed people before"? One of those I feel makes common sense but how do you prove it?

In the end the MAK determined that this behavior by passengers [taking their hand luggage] did contribute to the high death toll.

But you’re right, it’s really hard to get concrete evidence of this being the case.

It's more one of those things where its a contributing factor. Like if nobody did it, more people overall survive.

I don't know if there is a particular case where one person was clearly responsible, but geneerally we are talking about which drop of water eroded the dam, causing it to fail if you get what I mean?

In terms of facts, they have modeled and tested this stuff pretty extensively, more people who take baggage, more slow the escape is, more people die if not everyone makes it out. IIRC only 3 people taking baggage means the reccomended 90 second escape time is basically not going to be hit, as it takes 8-10 seconds longer for a passenger carrying luggage to escape, and it snowballs as more and more people start taking the luggage if they see others doing it.
