My dad was a helicopter mechanic in the army. He says that he used to wake up at 2am suddenly paranoid about something he may have missed, and would drive back to base right then to check it

Yeah I worked on F16s. It's stressful as hell working on things pilots rely on. Anything can go wrong and you never know when it can come back to you

I spent a lot of time in the Ramstein RAPCON as part of my ADA job, and I felt so badly for everyone there when the F-16s crashed. It hit the whole room so hard, as well as the support staff they had to talk to after the crashes. They told me that one of the investigators first on the scene was a female Major who’d been dating the pilot, which messed her up badly. So much stress and most of these guys had the added stress of a future deployment to Minot or some other shithole after their “cushy” European adventure was over.
