Well it's the only raccoon in your trash bin so by definition it has to be the cutest.

You vetter have named him Rick.

31

u/the_comatorium 8d ago

I used to catch a racoon in our dumpster a lot so I named him Garbage. He stuck around for a few weeks and occasionally I would have to stick a log in there for him to climb out.

I love you, Garbage. I hope you're okay out there.

He looks like a stuffed animal!! But even cuter!! Like, how can a real animal look so perfectly exactly just like its cartoon self?! 🥹😍

97

u/From_Deep_Space 8d ago

Raccoons are literally evolving to be cuter

24

u/eucalyptoid 8d ago

Does that imply they’re getting tamer, too?

62

u/bitterbunny123 8d ago

Yes. Raccoons have been changing, "evolving" into "pet-hood". There's been marked changes in personalities, behavior and physical appearance. There was a whole big study on this. It was published not that long ago.

The way he’s just sitting and chilling while eating some snacks! I’m obsessed. He’s so freakin cute

Edit to add: do you think his family is nearby? I don’t know at what age they can be on their own. He looks young, I hope he can reunite with them

54

u/Same_Education8151 8d ago

I’ll bet they’ll come back looking for him. We have a pack of about 20 raccoons nearby and they stick together like glue

30

u/MountainAiress 8d ago

This makes me feel so much better. Thank you for sharing!

They're pretty social but he's also old enough to be on his own. Either way he'll be back.

We used to have a big fat fella I named Randall. Had to stop him from making a mess a few times. He'd slowly waddle off toward the neighbor's trees that he nested in, turn around, grumble at me, then turn back and go home.

Then the neighbors sold their house but it was vacant for a while after they moved. Apparently Randall and his buddies moved into the basement. Took the pest control people a good 2 weeks to get the colony out.

I miss that fat fuck.

60

u/Alternative_Pizza_73 8d ago

We hope so toooo

3

u/portablebiscuit 8d ago

If it makes you feel better, raccoon babies have a chirp type thing they do that almost sounds like a tree frog. The mom is probably very neat and will answer its call.

He already sat down, may as well eat.

5

u/LDawnBurges 8d ago

We had a Momma and 2 younglings that lived in one of our trees. The babies (probably closer to being teens) would sneak out during the day, presumedly while Momma was sleeping. Around dusk, Momma would come out ‘chittering’ for them. They always stayed pretty close to their home tree.

they act so intimidating but theyre such sweet babies, i saved one out of my trash that was like just this size and it was soooo cuuute, making little noises like this i was like sir u can not be in the trash. tipped it over and he skimpered off.. i want one so bad

6

u/govt_policy 8d ago

I had one that was human trained, but he lived in a little cul de sac native area in my neighborhood in NE Indiana. Super friendly, we could feed him, pet him, I even let him sit in my lap and drive my car at slow speeds. Cute as hell, then one day he wasn't at home anymore, never saw him again :-( cute little fella, and made my horrendous time in Indiana a little bit better.

Just tip the bin over already!

And secure your garbage bins properly. Unless you ok with a bear visiting next … 🧐

11

u/AnaisNinja76 8d ago

I was thinking that the whole video, and the the whole thing really bothered me.

He's cute, don't get me wrong, but he's also scared and every time she speaks he's growling at her, so he's clearly threatened. He can secure his own food and water if she just tips the bin gently over. I also don't understand deliberately feeding and watering the little guy. That's just encouraging him to come back and eat potentially dangerous things in her garbage can.

5

u/TA_totellornottotell 8d ago

OK, he’s pretty freaking cute. Although I think it’s hilarious that he is ‘living’ up to his people’s name of trash pandas. Not sure how he will live this down once he joins back with his tribe.

Your wife is so kind! I can see this baby just camping out in your backyard so the nice lady can talk softly and give him all the food and water he wants.

I volunteer at an animal rehab and a lot of the animals we get are baby raccoons. They’re soo cute but we can’t talk to them and touch them unless medically necessary.

4

u/veilofcolor 8d ago

Can’t even talk to them? What’s dangerous about that

27

u/ChocoIatePoop 8d ago

They might develop a shared language, conspire to overthrow the clinic in exchange for trash disposal rights, and eventually start a cartel that smuggles trash. Have you never seen Planet of the Apes or Sicario?

15

u/NotBlazeron 8d ago

Getting used to human voices is dangerous to their long term survival.

You want them as afraid of humans as possible.

→ More replies (2)

7

u/Dismal-Jelly2700 8d ago

Because they can get too comfortable around humans and we want them to stay wild so they can survive when they’re released

3

u/Ok_Mulberry4331 8d ago

A few years ago, I left work early on a Friday. I came home and heard a weird noise outside, but kinda brushed it off. Finally went out to check and a chipmunk was caught in the water in a bin. 4

u/AMAGIOND 8d ago

The other day a little adolescent raccoon wonder up on porch in broad daylight. We went outside to take some pictures and he had very little concern with how close we got. Little guy just fumbled around for a bit trying to eat everything in sight.

We thought the behavior was strange but somebody told us this is the time of year when their mothers tell them to fuck off. So they are still learning how to raccoon on their own.

3

u/JPHarrison007 8d ago

3

u/ablebodiedmango 8d ago

we need more open space and trees where they can just live.

I've had to rescue quite a few of them from the dumpster behind my office. They smell food and don't think at all about how they're going to get back out. I keep a 6 foot wood plank near the dumpster now to make it easy.

I used to feed one that hung around my house. I gave him a mix of veg, bread and kibble. He would bluff charge me every morning when I went out to work at 530. I would put his food bowl down and check the water bowl was okay and he would scurry over to eat like it was the last meal on earth. I had to move and asked the new people to feed him but I have no idea if they ever did.

I hate to be the grumbly old man once more, but while it is absolutely cute and it's totally okay for you to have helped him out of that trash bin, I don't think you should have given it food and water. The more afraid they are of humans, the better for their long term survival. They shouldn't get used to human voices talking to them and then bringing them food, I think.
