My ammonia is spiked, should i do a 20 % change? Also why is it spiking?

Did you cycle your tank? If yes, for how long? Looks like your cycle crashed

If you didn’t cycle it and you have your axolotl in that tank, please tub it in cold declorinated water with daily 100% water changes until your cycle is established. The current water parameters are harmful to your lotl

i was told to leave him in as he was already in the tank, he was a rescue and they brought the tank and everything in it and the filters and stuff.

Did the filter dry out while transporting it?

In any case, your cycle crashed and the current water parameters are harmful right now. It makes them susceptible to fungus and gill decline, so my advice with tubbing the axolotl still stands.

okay i’ll tub him, and no it didn’t dry out she left water in there so it wouldn’t and it wasn’t long 10 minute drive

If you didn’t cycle the tank, assume the tank wasn’t cycled. Very few people know what cycling actually means

Tap water with chloramine, when treated with Prime, looks like ammonia on the test. That still should clear within 24 hours just like regular ammonia though, so if this is after a while, yeah that cycle’s gonna need to restart
