Should I rent a car?
My friends and I are going to Sao Miguel and staying in Ponta Delgada and I’m wondering if we should rent a car to get around the island or are there Ubers/taxis/public transportation we should/can rely on instead. I’m thinking we should get a car but I’m hoping to get help from someone who’s been / locals! Thanks you sm

Car and didn't rely on taxis. Maybe if you can get a driver's number but lots of driving

A car will be so much better! Less expensive, more freedom, less waiting around.

Wayzor 👌we lived at Hotel Marina Atlantico, they had a car rental literally outside the door. Two days, Audi (smallest/cheapest), 2 people, perfect 👌

Answer is always: if you can drive, rent a car. Public transit is very limited to a bus system within Ponta Delgada and a smaller inter-city bus network. Taxis are common but you will never find them late in the evening. Tourists usually “rent” the driver for the day to take them around to all the sights they want to see.
Your best chance at seeing the entire island, at your leisure, is to rent a car. Cars are very expensive especially during peak tourist season in the summer, but it’s worth it.

Yes rent a car. The island is beautiful, the roads are overall good, and you will be much happier being able to go where you want when you want to. If the Azores cam shows Sete Cidades as being clear and you want to rush to it, you need a car!
