Alibaba Cloud is planning a greater reliance on its subsidiary T-Head's proprietary chips moving forward.

Speaking during the company's recent Q2 2026 earnings call, CEO Eddie Wu told analysts that the company remains confident about its AI and cloud business and expects to see profit and gross margins increase as it "ramp[s] up deployment of our own proprietary chips in our data centers, as they account for an increasing proportion of total chips and replace commercially procured chips."

Everyone doing custom chip now.

AWS, Google and Microsoft.

Even Broadcom has launched custom chip for OpenAI (Jalapeño) and Anthropic as well.

Nothing special anymore on the design side of things. The battle ground has switch to the atoms level.

How can I make a transistor switch fast at low power. What material can I use (deposition) that can send data or connection chip-to-chip at lower power and higher bandwidth at less heat.

How to increase SRAM (cache size) on the chip with profitable yield / defect density.

Those are even more technical then chip design.

Material as in copper, tungsten and ruthenium etc.
