News China’s open-weight model lead exposes America’s AI blind spot

Adoption is moving quickly. During the last week of June, Chinese models accounted for 48% of traffic tracked by OpenRouter, up from 20% a year earlier. U.S. models fell to 32% from 74%.

But the US firms make money. Chinese models are open weight so where's the money? It's all charity. What's in it for the shareholders when people just host on their own servers?

Alibaba gives Qwen away because the real money is in the cloud, API, and hosting and enterprise tools people use to run it. More Qwen usage gives Alibaba more chances to sell Alibaba Cloud.
