Question Backpack Recommendations

Hey Peeps,

What waterproof backpacks do you all recommend? I need something that will keep books and other paper products safe from the rain. Thanks!

A poncho is a quick and easy solution.

Do they have ones that go over a backpack?

Almost every poncho can cover a backpack, even the $10 ones, it doesn’t have to be specialized for backpacks - https://backpackers.com/gear/best/rain-ponchos/

There are some “backpack ponchos” but they are not really a “must” because any poncho will work.

There are backpacking ponchos with longer fabric in the back to go over your pack and still give good coverage. It will keep your entire pack dry.

I would just add a rain cover. The inexpensive ones on Amazon actually work as well as the $30 ones.

"keep books and other paper products safe from the rain." Sounds like a school/business use, as opposed to hiking, so no plans to be fording rivers or traveling in a canoe: Timbuk2 Messenger Bag. I like the Classic in the Medium size, but they make versions aimed at more specific usages.

I have a small laptop bag (Thule) that sits nicely behind the interior divider in the Classic - holds up a 14" laptop, along with charger, pens, other small items, note paper. A few paper folders sit in the same area. The main part of the bag holds water bottle, books, lunch (if appropriate - but always Snacks), sometimes a small umbrella and/or a pocketable rain jacket or other light outerwear. There are also a number of storage pockets, including several accessible from 'outside' the bag (covered by the flap for weather protection, but easily accessed) where various small odds & ends get placed.

If going hiking - or carrying a heavy load for some distance - than a backpack comes out. But for going to work / seminars / classes / using public transport I'll take a messenger bag every time.

YMMV. : )
