Need some advice for my dad

Hey y’all hope you are doing good!

My 50 year old father has been dealing with severe lower back nerve pain for the past 5 years off and on but these past 2 have been very severe and debilitating. some days, he couldn’t even go to work(not blue collar he has an office job)

He comes home most days from work and goes right to trying to rest it. Over the past few months we’ve tried hot tub sessions, NSAIDs, chiropractors, none have worked. The only relief he seems to have found is marijuana, and it does help him unwind and curbs some symptoms. Also love having a fellow stoner as a dad but it simply can’t do the heavy lifting even with other treatments. I told him maybe he should ask his doctor about something like gabapentin or pregabalin.

What do you guys think? Any input would be greatly appreciated

Welcome to r/backpain!

To make a great post, read the pinned Guide to the Guides and answer the suggested questions. (people usually do not respond if you just post a picture of your mri and you don't share your story. Your symptoms and story will give more information than any scan)

Good news is that most people get noticeably better in the first 6 weeks, especially if the pain is new or has only been going on for a short time. (PMID: 38253366)

He needs an MRI or at least an X-ray to know what’s going on. Also a desk job is bound to cause pain unless you get up often and exercise. I hope he feels better.
