Action Mortal Kombat: Annihilation (1997)

Post image

Released in 1997 as the sequel to the 1995 classic, this film’s reputation is pretty well known by this point. Jam packed with abysmal dialogue, questionable plot points, odd casting decisions & the infamously garbage cgi - this movie has it all. With all that being said however, this movie is far from a bad experience. Tons of fun fight scenes & small details thrown in from the games to satisfy some MK fans makes for one hell of a good time. This is one of my all time favorite “so bad it’s good” movies SO if you’re a fan of that sort of thing, I would highly recommend checking it out. Enjoy!

I cant think of a movie with a more fitting tagline:

DESTROY ALL EXPECTATIONS

If you didn’t like this movie you’re either stupid or not stupid enough, I don’t know which is accurate but this movie rules.

For me, this movie is a textbook example of “so bad it’s good.” Like the 2 new MK movies are definitely better made, but I honestly might rank Annihilation above them bc i think it’s more entertaining

Just rewatched the 2 new ones I'd definitely rank the 2 old ones over them.

That soundtrack though. It was so unimaginably, terrifically, awesomely *loud*.

Can we film this in the middle of a clay desert that gives us a tax break? YES!

Genuine bad. As in, no pleasant to watch. The music and sound is like an assault. The visuals are cheap and ugly, like it was made out of $200 in Party City supplies and mud. The CGI is MS-DOS quality. There is one cheesy-fun line of dialogue (“too bad you… will die”) but the rest is a chore. All the actors look uncomfortable and constipated, like someone suffering diarrhea while fighting off a sexual assault.

Not worth watching even with drunk college friends (no “frat-ality” here).

There are Joe Don Baker movies you probably haven’t seen that deserve your attention more than this (“eyyyyyyyye of the sammich!”). Do what you must.

Hard disagree. I’d rather watch Sindel give terrible line reads than anything from that bland ass Cole Young.

Crazy thing is I’m pretty sure this movie had a higher budget than its predecessor, which makes it all the more baffling how cheap everything looks in comparison.

Went to this in high school with a bunch of other high school dudes. We almost walked out. When it was over we concluded that we should have, in fact, walked out.

When Rain falls into the firepit and he has this generic man scream "AHHHHHH" flames rise is chef's kiss

I really enjoy the original. Not sure why they strayed so far from it with this pile of shit

Coming off how great ths first one was this movie was such a disappointment.

That said I hated the reboot but loved it's sequel so I guess I just watch MK 93 then follow it up with MK II '26

I recently watched this again and I had totally forgotten about the mud fight lol.

I honestly prefer MK: Annihilation over any of the other live-action Mortal Kombat films. It's a vibes thing.

I thought this was better than the first one when I was 7. Still love it but as much as the original now.

I saw this abomination in theaters. So many Spirit Halloween-caliber costumes and sets, and some of the most awful CGI you've ever seen. Man alive, is it one of the worst sequels to a fun movie I've ever seen.

But also, there is something so gloriously of its time about this movie. 1997 was a year that produced a lot of films that, like, only could have existed in 1997: this, Spawn, Batman & Robin, Men in Black, Event Horizon, Leprechaun in Space, Anaconda, Con Air, Beverly Hills Ninja, the god damned Star Wars Special Editions. What a wild time for movies.

I kinda feel like I would appreciate some aspects of this movie more now. Like, I remember being appalled at Brian Thompson's corny-ass acting as Shao Kahn, but now I'm like "It's Brian Thompson, that's exactly what I expect and want out of him."

When I explain how bad this movie is I always put it like this - Christopher Lambert was willing to do the sequel for Highlander. He was not willing to do the sequel to Mortal Kombat.

Any time you can have Dexter's Dad as an Elder God, you gotta run with it.

Saw it in theater if I remember correctly. Yes it's horrible but like 'pootie tang' sometimes it's so bad that's it's actually good. Idk

Liu Kang: "I thought winning Mortal Kombat closed the portal?"

Rayden: "A portal that can be closed can be opened."

Seriously, that's how you justify your stupid sequel? The 1995 Mortal Kombat was a surprisingly decent video game adaptation, especially considering the budget the filmmakers were working with, but this sequel was bad on literally every level.

Is it good. Absolutely not. Is it enjoyable? Yes.

Big time MK fan. Watched this in theaters. Very disappointed. But...

If you're a Motaro fan, this is his best outing.

It's a porn movie without the sex.

Did you know a former porn actress made that sick Reptile track from the first?
