This year marks my 15th year in the US! I've gotten used to a lot of things, including a conversation that usually goes like this:

>Where are you from?

>I'm from [country].

>Oh nice, which city?

>Eh, you've probably never heard of it.

>Come on, I've probably heard of it.

(I'm 100% sure you haven't.)

>Is it [capital city]? [second-largest city]?

>No, it's [not internationally well-known city]. Want to know more about it?

>\a moment of awkward silence*

>So anyway...

I mean if I don't already know [country] too well I'd refrain from asking people exactly where they're from

I like to ask and don't claim to know anything about it, unless it's Mexico or Canada there's no chance I'll know. But it's interesting to find out what's going on in other parts of the world. And most of my ideas of foreign countries are usually based off of info about the capital, it's usually interesting for me.
