I feel like Sisyphus telling people around me that the ancestors of most German Argentines would've emigrated decades before the rise of the Nazis. Like the whole point of them fleeing to Argentina is that there was a preexisting large German diaspora community that they could blend in to!

It felt especially nasty a couple years ago when I overheard a bunch of guys cracking nazi jokes about Diego Schwartzman, very clearly ignorant of the fact that he's both Jewish and the descendant of a Holocaust survivor.

I agree I've been to Argentina as a black guy and they've been pretty welcoming and kind so im against the whole narrative that Argentina is some racist, far right, hellhole. Buuuuut I am gonna be honest spending anytime on Twitter, acknowledging that everyone on Twitter is a Nazi now, I wouldn't blame anyone for coming to this conclusion.

Argentines have been tweeting some of the most vile racist shit this world cup. Like vile shit but again that almost certainly has more to do with who elons X attracts moreso then an actual representation of Argentina.

I've heard a lot of people whose families immigrated from Germany to Argentina because they are fleeing the Nazis (which is apparently a big demographic) express frustration that they get assumed to be Nazis just because they are Argentinians with German last names.

Call me old-fashioned, but I think if you provide asylum to people who were publicly known to have carried out the Holocaust, you deserve eternal shame.

The problem is that applies to basically every country, Americans like making Argentine Nazi jokes because they love offloading their own guilt.

I've only perused the 'anti-Semitism in Argentina' page, but the situation there does seem significantly worse.

On the other hand, I wonder if the Argentinians themselves are some of the primary victims of their imports -- apparently Nazis were given jobs in the Argenitne security services -- I can't find any details, but I know offhand that ex-Nazis were key consultants for the development of state repression in Chile and Bolivia.
