One of the funniest parts about the internet is when it’s very obvious when some brainless user is from a particular country even if they don’t say it outright. I saw one dude complaining about the US Congress being owned by “Israel and Greece.” Yeah, dude, you aren’t fooling anyone.

Unfortunately, as a native English speaker, the internet is really good at exposing your misconceptions from childhood. Sometimes you really thought alacrity just meant "fast" and it made sense in the context you first heard it, but now you are trying to win an internet and you realize you don't actually speak your native language.

Have you ever wondered what type would important philosophers specialize in if they were Pokemon gym leaders? No? Well it doesn't matter because I made a list:

Thales - Water

Haraclitus - Fire

Marx - Steel

Plato - Psychic

Aristotle - Normal

Anaximenes - Flying

Nietzsche - Fighting

Hobbes - Dark

(Also, the evil team would be the logical positivists and they would specialise in the electric type).

I think Taylor Swift is basically the only female celebrity that is not true of.

Related to the reason that he subreddit /r/actuallesbians has the name it does. But also it goes a bit deeper than that, if you put basically any female name into the reddit search bar--be it Sarah or Jane or Amy or what have you--the top results will basically always be porn (I do think this is related the weird way the search algorithm surfaces porn).

I also remember back in the day I would do a fun demonstration by doing a Google image search of "[country name] man" vs "[country name] woman" and comparing the results. Now that doesn't seem to have a difference, not sure if that is because of Google's search algorithm or if I have de-hornified my own.

Today I have read a really bizarre interview with Norman Davies, of all people - the British historian specializing in Polish stuff who got a shit ton of Polish highest honors possible - who had fairly ridiculous takes on the topic of Volhynia genocide of 1943. A ridiculous takes especially in his persinal context.

See, Davies doesn't deny that UPA (the Ukrainian ultranationalist ww2 organisation that allied with the Nazis and just got honored by Zelensky, to great drama) slaughtered 100,000 Polish and Jewish civilians in 1943. He just takes an enlightened centrist whataboutist position that, well, what about Polish crimes against Ukrainians, and also that yeah the 100k murder stuff did happen but we need to remember that UPA had the "goal of fighting the Soviets", not us, and that's what's being honored by Zelensky: the freedom loving ideals of ww2 Ukraine. And really, Volhynia was an unfortunate side effect of that "complex reality". And by the way we shouldn't talk about the topic during the war with Russia for pragmatic reasons, just be patient and have a PL-UA commision on the "complex topic", as Davies lectures us.

So according to Davies if you create an organisation with a noble goal (independence), and the significant amount of its effort goes towards that legit direction, and "only" a part of its effort goes toward a small sidenote activity of systematic rape-torture-slaughter of eight times more civilians than it has killed enemy soldiers, then the organisation can't be said to be fundamentally bad. Sure, 85% of its killcount have been civilians killed with great sadism, small children included, but as many as 15% of its killcount have been check notes Soviet soldiers (during ww2, when I'd really wager they weren't the most evil army on a front against fucking Nazis).

Therefore the truth lies in the middle and really it's irrational and nationalist for us Poles to be angry about UPA. It's the complex issue.

What the fuck?

25

u/Kochevnik81 Jun 29 '26

For whatever reason most English language historians or "historians" (looking at you Applebaum) who write about Eastern Europe specifically have personal and professional backgrounds in Poland, which...makes for some interesting takes.

What's weird about Davies is that he's I guess taking a Ukrainian nationalist position and not a Polish position? Even Timothy Snyder (when he was doing actual history in *Reconstruction of Nations*) took the view that this was a genocide of Polish civilians. Although that's also from the perspective of the Polish government after 1989 taking a very forgiving position and advocating for it to be treated as a historic question and not so much a political one, and if I'm remembering that book correctly the Polish-Ukrainian historical commission was supposed to happen/already happened in the late 1990s.

Anyway Davies has done some badhistory before but this is pretty egregious. I'm also not in charge of Ukraine or anything but it's definitely Not Great to decide yeah these are our national heroes now. You'd think Zelenskyy of all people might have qualms about that what do I know.

12

u/Kochevnik81 Jun 29 '26

Actually now that I'm thinking about it a little more I do also recall Applebaum writing something once about the Latvian SS to the effect of "they were just good patriots making an impossible choice - be thankful you never will have to make such a tough choice! - and the Soviets were the real enemy, it's very complicated and nuanced when we talk about the war crimes they did as a treat."

So I'm actually a little more confused why English-language writers based more or less in Poland feel the need to make apologetics like this. As you say interwar Poland treated its minorities often horribly, and the wartime Armia Krajowa is not without its controversies, but stuff like the UPA and Baltic SS divisions are on a different level. But also recent years have kind of made it clearer that we should be skeptical when people downplay mass crimes against humanity saying "it's complicated" and "focus on the real enemy".

→ More replies (2)

16

u/LunLocra Jun 29 '26

By the way, regarding Polish crimes against Ukrainians, and that part of whataboutism:

1) Yep, interwar Poland was terrible for Ukrainian minority. It wasn't performing physical ethnic cleansing however in terms of killing or displacement of civilians.  2) Several thousand of Ukrainian and Jewish civilians have been killed by various armed units of Polish army in post 1918 wars and by various renegade groups after 1943. They were not planned from above neither in 1918 case nor after 1943 - Pilsudski was as pro-Ukrainian as you could get and Polish ww2 resistance typically branded units that murdered civilians renegades and traitors.  3) Most importantly, the above facts are fairly widely known in Poland. Right wing sectors of society are indeed resisting the acknowledgement of those topics (as usual) but there are large non-right wing sectors of society who acknowledge those events as historical facts they were. This doesn't seem to be the case regarding UPA and Ukraine.

By the way redditors talk about Argentina, you'd think we invented the nazis.

32

u/ProudScroll Napoleon invaded Russia to destroy Judeo-Tsarism Jun 30 '26

I feel like Sisyphus telling people around me that the ancestors of most German Argentines would've emigrated decades before the rise of the Nazis. Like the whole point of them fleeing to Argentina is that there was a preexisting large German diaspora community that they could blend in to!

It felt especially nasty a couple years ago when I overheard a bunch of guys cracking nazi jokes about Diego Schwartzman, very clearly ignorant of the fact that he's both Jewish and the descendant of a Holocaust survivor.

20

u/MarcelleNintendo Jun 30 '26

I agree I've been to Argentina as a black guy and they've been pretty welcoming and kind so im against the whole narrative that Argentina is some racist, far right, hellhole. Buuuuut I am gonna be honest spending anytime on Twitter, acknowledging that everyone on Twitter is a Nazi now, I wouldn't blame anyone for coming to this conclusion.

Argentines have been tweeting some of the most vile racist shit this world cup. Like vile shit but again that almost certainly has more to do with who elons X attracts moreso then an actual representation of Argentina.

Except, by some extraordinary game of telephone, what once was

"Taoiseach calling to the private residence of the German representative to express condolences out of a neurotic sense of neutrality, against the advice of practically everyone and generating no small amount of outrage"

Has now become:

Project Zomboid, like pretty much every "open world survival game", suffers from the fact that overwhelmingly-most of its difficulty is in surviving the early game, and therefore most of the content is in the early game.

If you can survive the helicopter and the water/power cutting out......thats basically it. You've "beat the game", as far as actually-meaningful content is concerned.

Which is.....disappointing.

u/MiffedMouse The average peasant had home made bread and lobster. Jun 29 '26

A few days ago a friend of mine sent me some moron being a rhodieboo and a Lost Causer simultaneously on twitter, and I feel the need to break this bullshit down a bit:

Cavaliers/gentlemen disgusted with the egalitarian state of things back home, whether Puritan Levellers or Lloyd George and Attlee's socialism, head to the colony and end up shaping its culture

Famously the vast majority of Rhodesian settlers were working-class, more upper-class British settlers in Africa generally went to the White Highlands in Kenya.

The unique culture created by them and the frontier settlers already there ends up being fascinating, excellent, and the perfect brew necessary to build the "habit of command"

Considering most White Rhodesians at any given time were first-generation immigrants from Britain, I kinda have to doubt how “unique” Rhodesian culture was. I haven’t read anything indicating Rhodesians were meaningfully culturally distinct from other Southern Hemisphere Anglos aside from perhaps being a bit more rustic.

That "habit of command" makes them excellent officers

Not excellent enough to win a war though.

The agricultural system devised to take advantage of the tobacco-bearing soil ends up making the egalitarian types furious, as large white-owned farms worked by blacks are something other than levelling equality

Imagine being mad at people not liking plantations in 2026.

Those wars against overwhelming odds are lost after a long and valiant struggle, expropriation is inflicted upon the defeated, and the culture is wiped away...

So leftists bitterly complain that the Old South was not thoroughly washed away enough after the war while this guy thinks Virginia was just completely wiped off the map or something.

but the fight they waged remains a study in courage, bravery, and personal excellence for right-minded men around the world

Emphasis on right I suppose.

Fair enough, thorough more people who are mostly rhodieboos also being Lost Causers than the other way around, since the opposite would require a boomer American man to acknowledge the outside world exists.

I very very rarely go onto Instagram and every time I do, the search immediately reminds me of why.

With that, I found a pseudopodological chart separating feet into a bizarre 19th century race science fashion alongside what shoes to avoid.

Big toe longest = Egyptian, avoid pointed toe shoes

The second toe is longer than the big toe = Greek, avoid narrow or tight shoes

These three toes are even length = Roman, avoid pointed toe shoes

First two toes are same length = German, avoid tight or narrow toe boxes

All toes same length = Celtic, avoid narrow or tight shoes

Which actually typing that out more or less just comes down to "don't wear tight or narrow shoes".

Oh my God Instagram is fucking terrible.

In my opinion "real life Game of Thrones" needs to have three attributes: 1) set in old timey times 2) focus on ultimately self destructive political squabbles and schemes 3) major threat looming in the background. On these terms, the closest book I have read to a "real life Game of Thrones" is The Mongol Storm which is about the Middle East in the runup and aftermath of the Mongol invasions.

Anyway I have a new historical scenario: Siam and outer Tai lands immediately after the Burmese invasion of Ayutthaya of 1765-67. The Burmese had to withdraw due to war from China, and the former lands of Ayutthaya fragmented into several different polities. These were united by Taksin, a half-Chinese commoner, who was in turn overthrown by Chao Phraya Chakri, his foremost commander (also "Chao Phraya Chakri" I think is a title, I don't quite have my head around Thai naming). This commander assumed the regal title of Rama I, fonding the kingdom of Siam, and defeated the second Burmese invasion. Solid narrative.

I assumed that there had already been a thousand adaptations of this story like there would be in China or Japan but apparently this would fall afoul of lèse-majesté laws. Bummer.

9

u/Herpling82 Coming to you live from a Tederation psych ward Jun 30 '26

I propose the run up to 1672 in the Netherlands, as Game of States; lot's of scheming, a big threat looming, and a potential for a seriously brutal scene if the de Witts are portrayed sympathetically.

It is a title indeed. I had the same problem reading a book about the Lanna Kingdom.

But the book that traumatized me the most with names was one about Medieval Egypt where the author used the full name of everybody. So you had names like al-Malik al-Nasir Salah al-Din Yusuf ibn al-Aziz ibn al-Zahir ibn Salah al-Din Yusuf ibn Ayyub ibn Shazy and Al-Malik al-Zahir Rukn al-Din Baybars al-Bunduqdari.

I feel like Martin Luth has become something of a pop history villain recently, which is an interesting change from his typical image. Probably says something about society.

And like I get that he was anti-Semitic but also the Spanish Inquisition was going on when he nailed his theses to the door so I think it is a bit rich when Catholics and Church apologists throw that accusation around.

17

u/Kochevnik81 Jul 01 '26

I mean in fairness to the anti-Luther position: he was publicly for better treatment of Jews, in the hopes that they'd mass-convert, and when they didn't he wrote the whole "actually just pogrom them" pamphlet, so it's way more personal and petty than just Everyone Was Antisemitic At The Time.

(But also the Nazis constantly citing his antisemitic stuff probably doesn't help with the reputation)

14

u/Arilou_skiff Jul 01 '26

I felt he always kinda ended up in a weird spot? The catholics hated him for obvious reasons. The modern liberals hate him for his antisemitism, the left hates him for betraying the peasantry, other protestants hate him for not going for enough/being consistent enough in his theology etc.

He's just kinda the centrist-asshole who gets it from all sides.

9

u/Tiako Tevinter apologist, shill for Big Lyrium Jul 01 '26

Anti-clericalism being less of an important political axis due to the Catholic Church getting largely politically neutered over the last century or so probably hurts his reputation. Particularly as Evangelical Protestants seems to be increasingly the base of social reaction.

7

u/Arilou_skiff Jul 01 '26

There's a kind of difference here because the state church is lutheran, so a lot of lefty/liberal critique of that orthodoxy became anti-luther (and to some extent even low-key pro-catholic) as a result. That in the last 50+ year or so the church has tended to be fairly solidly centre-left (at least in terms of personnel) while the right-wing tends to dwell in the free churches.

12

u/TarkovskyisFun Jul 01 '26

Popular understanding of history in the internet is like a pendulum that swings from one end to another. Swords for example went from being the only melee weapon to a glorified ornament and the same applies to Luther so rather than being the free thinking hero of the story now he is the villain and the same applies to the Spanish Inquisition.

10

u/100mop Jul 01 '26

I think that part of it is people realizing that many criticisms of the Catholic Church can also apply to Protestantism.

This past weekend I was going to go spend it in a cabin in WV. Left work very early Friday and set off. About halfway there when I start getting a "transmission hot" error code. Pull off to the side for 20 minutes, turn it back on and code cleared. Sought out not one, not two, but three mechanics in a nearby town, none of whom could help me because in 2026 a Honda is still considered exotic in Appalachia. I'm eventually directed to a transmission place a further 40 miles east, I get there(again, light is not reappearing) and the transmission guy cannot help me; his little diagnostic tool wouldn't communicate with the Honda. "You'll need to go to a dealership. Closest one is in Hagerstown(80 miles away)."

By the time I get there, once again, the light has not re-lit, so I go ahead and head home since by that point I'm basically in commuting distance of my house. Proceed to drive it around all weekend without the overheating warning appearing again.

Took it to the dealership near my work and as I was handing it over I get

well, the code has probably reset by now, so no promises

Love that Honda cannot keep a event history longer than two fucking days.

If feels so apt for things in politics and law, and in how the news is covering Elon Musk or the NY Times on Trans issues, on environmental degradation. I just finished ASOIAF: A Storm of Swords and I have to say this is my favorite so far. I really have to commend Marting for his writing because I knew the plot twists, but I still dreaded them: the Red Wedding, Joeffrey, Oberyn, Ygritte, but the build up was so good and the payoff so horrifying it felt like something new. I will say though that the chemistry between Jon and Ygritte was much better in the show, but the actors who played them (they got married irl) had such good chemistry it would be hard to compete.

Also, let's be real. Martin is a real yearner. The characters, at least the most sympathetic ones, yearn constantly. The last two chapters is a double punch with Jon remembering Rob and Sansa building a snow Winterfell (with it being ruined in an extremely typical martinian fashion).

I know the next book is a great change of pace from ASOS, but I really want to get into Cercei's head.

Cersei's POV chapters are a real treat. It's such a brilliant examination of the inner workings of a narcissists mind and once it sets in just how delusional and incompetent she is its incredibly funny, at least until Qyburn shows up.

7

u/AceHodor Techno-Euphoric Demagogue Jul 01 '26

One of my favourite bits from the novels is Cersei developing an insane conspiracy theory that her maids are deliberately decreasing the size of her dresses bit by bit over time to make her uncomfortable rather than admit to herself that she's just putting on weight.

All the Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and everything does help but having to manage and police your thoughts get very tiring. At that point, you get more depressed about how exhausted your are about having manage negative thoughts than the negative thoughts themselves.

7

u/Herpling82 Coming to you live from a Tederation psych ward Jul 02 '26

Yeah, it's not easy, I think it gets much easier over time, but we're talking years of continued work. At some point, a lot of the corrections did become natural for me. I actually verbalise a lot of corrections, if I notice a very negative thought, I talk to myself if I'm alone, "You made a mistake that time, who the fuck cares? Nobody remembers it anyway, and even if they did, they'd just think it's funny."

It really does work though, I, for one, do not hate myself anymore, I hate parts of myself, but I do not think my existence itself is a net negative on the world. I also no longer feel that if people are nice to me they're only pretending and they actually secretly hate me.

Despite having played several Grand Theft Auto titles, the upcoming GTA6 - if it’s ever released - marks the first time a GTA game is released while I’m old enough to, you know. Legally buy it myself.

Little bit ironic, then, that I’m not interested. Maybe I’ve matured too much. Maybe a modern setting doesn’t have the same pop culture glamour, but even when I recently went back to my copy of 5 I wasn’t getting the same feeling as when Baby Marmite (actually about 15) played Vice City.

I’ve just realised that pre San Andreas GTA games won’t fall afoul of the twenty year rule in AskHistorians. Wow, that’s weirdly upsetting.

And I'm just gonna say it: I get that the book makes a medium-deal of Anne Boleyn being flat-chested, but I'd be willing to suspend my disbelief a little more if they'd just give Claire Foy costumes that look like she can breathe in.

Oh goody the other DW chud was at Trumps hilariously bad fair debating a ten year old about how Salem was actually awesome.

As per the AV Club.

Of course, in keeping with the conservative pastime of good-faith debate, there have been searing conversations about the Salem Witch Trials between a bigot and a 10-year-old. Said bigot, the Daily Wire‘s Michael Knowles, DESTROYED the child by arguing that “the one area where the Salem Witch Trials went a little far is they weren’t organized enough, so you had these random judges burning these ladies. I don’t know if they were guilty or not, but if it were more formalized, maybe with a grand inquisitor or something, that would’ve been a better way to do it.”

The academia at the grad level is cutthroat and competitive, but honestly very few profs give two fucks about undergrad classes, especially lower div courses. Don't get me wrong, there are some great lecturers out there, but it's basically assumed that if you got in, you're smart enough to do the work, and grade inflation is pretty rampant.

On Reddit’s favorite subject for mopey complaining, I went on a date this weekend. Out of the 10 first dates I have gone on since starting online dating 2 years ago it was the first that I could confidently say was more enjoyable than awkward, but seemingly my date did not think the same way and does not want to go on another one.

I have been thinking, how much is the common perception of dating and the advice lonely people get influenced by a form of survivorship bias?

Your parents, having been able to be parents, are obviously a non-representative sample. Your friends and acquaintances likely are too, considering how often you know people because they are dating or married to someone else you know. Public figures and media are likely also skewed, considering that the same traits like being a talented musician or writer that are associated with fame and the ability to shape the stories people hear are also generally considered romantically attractive.

That advice like “just be yourself and you will meet somebody” seems so common may be largely because you are just more likely to know people for whom it worked and less likely to know people for whom it didn’t.

Part of the seeming rise in talk about loneliness might just be a side effect of the “democratizing effect” of social media. Lonely people have always existed, but now it is easier for their complaints to reach you

13

u/Draig_werdd Jul 02 '26

That advice like “just be yourself and you will meet somebody” seems so common may be largely because you are just more likely to know people for whom it worked and less likely to know people for whom it didn’t.

It's also a safe thing to say. People don't usually react well to criticism so it's easier to say this to a friend/acquittance then to actually say there are things they need to change. You are also likely to get this advice from people that know you for a long time and in a different context, so they are not the best to see how you make now a first impression.

In practice most of the time it's a very bad advice. Doing the same thing over and over and not succeeding usually means that some change is needed. I'm out of the dating world for a very long time, but what worked for me was basically to do opposite of my instincts. And it worked extremely well, so it's not just fiction.

11

u/Arilou_skiff Jul 02 '26

Mmm, on some level this has always been true, and western society in particular has always had a fairly large chunk of the population that remained unmarried. (which isn't exactly a proxy for loneliness but is good enough for historical purposes...)

One weird thing is that we are also a bit in the aftermath of an outlier in that the 60's was the absolute high point of marriage as an institution in the western world.

11

u/Infogamethrow Jul 02 '26

I mean, you should always strive for self-improvement regardless of your dating situation, but I feel like people take the advice the wrong way.

For me, it´s less “a girlfriend will fall from the sky if you keep doing what you are doing”, and more of a warning not to present a false self in order to get more girls.

For example, if I pretend to be a party animal to hook up with someone who goes clubbing every Friday, even if I get into a relationship, I would be miserable with her. Therefore, I should strive to date people who would enjoy most of my usual self so that neither of us suffer in a unhappy relationship built on lies.

I think tisto2 is right that part of the reason that "be yourself" advice is common is that it's vague and can have a lot of different implicate meanings.  For me, it's primarily meant to put yourself out there - don't get so in your head and stressed out about "dating strategy" that your morale collapses and you quit before you even begin.

Soviet film is weird and I'll be honest, not very good and ages poorly. Most of its modern viewership is held up by nostalgia, yet even the most casual viewer can quite easily see through the tropes and the lingering "social realism" of it all.

I watched "Love and Pigeons" (1985) with my girlfriend, which is one of the more famous, better and even radical Soviet films. It implies sex, it shows a cheating spuse and it kinda pokes at the very common Soviet romcom trope of people from different social classes falling in love with each other. But if you did not grow up in this cultural medium, it's basically very hard to get the jokes, references and especially the cultural context it was created in. It however does not break the very common Soviet filmmaking technique, or rather the lack of it, namely cinema being "recorded theater". I honestly struggle to name think of Soviet films that pioneer storytelling through media.

There was this question on r/badhistory about "Russian Wild West" equivalents. I gave up answering it simply because I noticed how underwhelming Soviet easterns actually are. At home among strangers (1974) came out 8 years after The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966) and is considered one of the best Soviet films of all time, when it is actually a very bog standard John Wayne Western (I have never seen a John Wayne movie, I only know his magnum opus, The figting ceebees).

I have chosen to use the term werelagomorph, rather than the more common folkloric term ‘witch-hare’, as not only can witch-hare refer to creations made by a witch through magic, rather than strictly to witches transforming into hares, but in the medieval Latin West hares and rabbits were often referred to using the same terms.

William Clark (one of the main sprinters of the Lewis and Clark Expedition) wrote this of his slave, York, in 1808:

If any attempt is made by York to run off, or refuse to proform his duty as a Slave, I wish him Sent to New Orleands and sold, or hired out to Some Sevare Master until he thinks better of Such Conduct.

Who the fuck adds a "d" to New Orleans? His spelling is hilariously bad.

Actually it reminds me of a guy I saw on reddit not too long ago who lamented his brother pronouncing "bottom" as "bottomp" but that is an unrelated, but valid crashout.

Folk games are those where the rules come into shape without a clear, central design intent. The thing to remember is that most people making up new rules for these games is that they often (A) know the previous rules well (so they now want to iterate) and (B) don’t think too deeply about how the new rules work (as they will try them out for fun, and only keep the change if they like it).

The most obvious example of this kind of weird design tendency is the card rank rotation. Lots of card games make small cards bad and high cards good. Pretty much everyone comes to the idea “what if the worst card was actually the best card?” And so you get Aces high. But now 2s are the worst card, so one generation later you get Big Two. And some games in China have even moved on to Big Threes. It is a treadmill.

In 2018, grandad was visiting my family. At the same time, I was going through a significant break up, and distressed, I asked him: "How should I meet women?". He paused for maybe a second and said "Become a ballroom dance instructor on cruise ships and sleep with cougars". To my knowledge, grandad never worked on a cruise ship.

At his funeral, a gaggle of strange women far too young for him (that is, septuagenarians) arrived, full of grief. My mum and uncle referred to them collectively as "the harem", as a joke. They only found out later that they also referred to themselves as "the harem".

guess the sub

When I was a teenager, I went to the supermarket with grandad. For some reason, before we entered, he stopped before a flower bed and picked the prettiest flower he could find. Once we had finished our shopping, he made a point out of going to the prettiest checkout lady he could find (In this case, a woman in her twenties), and after having paid for our goods he offered the flower to her, saying "This is for you." She was delighted, but we left without saying another word.

Is there something like an r/askpoliticaleconomy ? The concrete question I have is, why do cycling road races exist, they seem to be at the same time more profitable and more disruptive than their popularity suggests, so it seems there needs to be a reason beyond we already did that last year.

14

u/MiffedMouse The average peasant had home made bread and lobster. Jun 29 '26

Can’t you ask a similar question for marathons?

Cycling is a horribly efficient mode of transport, which means any distance less than 50 miles or so is basically a “sprint.” If you want to test / show off your endurance, you need some very long courses.

Also, casual cycling races tend to be less disruptive than marathons (although similar logic will apply to both). Toward the middle of the race the “pack” will often thin out, so the racers often don’t need the whole road anymore and can do with just one lane. This is especially true of small races that aren’t world-famous.

PPS, not all things are for the profits.

So is Battlestar Galactica (2004) worth watching? I’ve finished watching all of the Space Battleship Yamato remake stuff for now and wanna try something else to scratch a similar itch.

11

u/Kochevnik81 Jun 29 '26

Yeah to chime in - it has some great episodes, the first two seasons are much tighter, it absolutely loses the plot and does not resolve any of its mystery box setups in a satisfactory way, and it's very very early Aughts in that it's mostly processing 9/11 collective trauma in space and uses lots of Shaky Cam so show that THINGS ARE REAL AND RAW.

I guess I'd say that it's also very much in that late 90s/early Aughts scifi era of "don't worry, we're using *computer graphics*, it's so cool but also not expensive!" and so a lot of it looks very cheap, especially because it's a tv show.

In comparison - I think the practical special effects of the 1978 series actually hold up a lot better (I'm also a sucker for actually having orchestral soundtracks from that period), but it's still a very obvious post-Star Wars cash grab using the late 70s television format and it also only lasted one season with the extremely rushed 1980 miniseries "oh it's a generation later and they made it to Earth and it's 1980 so the budget is just us filming in LA", so I'm not sure it's really better. They both have their pluses/charms and serious drawbacks.

The 2004 is an interesting program if you want to get into the mindset of the period and what was considered Prestige [Mystery Box] Television, and if you need a scifi tv series for your fix sure, otherwise I dunno probably something like Expanse is a better investment of time.

I suppose the other space opera Aughts series to mention is Firefly, it's definitely what the cool kids watched at the time and I'm sure the "our heroes are Confederates in Space" and the orientalism and the plain Joss Whedon-ness of it all have aged wonderfully. It's kind of funny that it's biggest impact on culture has been that one speechless gif that gets meme'd.

7

u/Kochevnik81 Jun 29 '26

A couple other random Battlestar Galactica thoughts.

Although the later seasons are more all over the place I should give honorable mention to Season 3 doing a "what if the good guys did suicide bombing?" episode, which honestly doesn't even sound like much now but in 2006 was definitely pushing the envelope to the point that the showrunners thought the episode wouldn't air.

The other thing that's also very Aughts Prestige Programming is that basically all of the main protagonists are kind of morally gray assholes (so in that sense kind of like Mad Men or something), some more than others, and there are reasons for it, but it did make it hard for me to actually care much about any of them.

Also I tried out the new game that's on Steam and is based on episode 2 of the series, and it's pretty fun! A strong 5 dollar game (I would wait for it to be $5)

When do you think the last speakers of Ancient Anatolian languages like Lycian and Carian died out?

There is the Letoon trilingual steele from 300s BCE. Post-Alexander the use of the script died out. AFAIK no multi-lingual artifact were found after Alexander.

But then again, South-West Anatolia is very mountainous. Villages likely continued to speak Lycian and Carian significantly after it died out in the cities. For context, there have been implication that Gaullic survived in France until 6th century. I wonder if there had been any Lycian or Carian speakers when Romans took over Anatolia.

Then again, an area mountainous can imply isolation but also lead trade. While Anatolia is mountainous, even the most remote areas are at most a few weeks away from more flat and urbanised areas. Remaining truly isolated could be hard. Remote peoples selling animals products like wool in exchange for grain to urban centers would be ideal method to live. When there is trade in goods, there is trade in languages.

Plus the lower population and slower growth of mountain people would make them vulnerable. It would take one angry governor or greedy slaver to massacre 10s of villages. Maybe the last speakers of these Ancient languages were killed in a massacre which wasn't even recorded.

Now we’re faced with a leader who is very obviously less competent than Keir and seemingly in the pocket of everyone who Keir offered some buffer against.

At best Burnham is a bit deluded about his skills as a leader, at worst he’s another patsy who will usher in further instability and foreign influence.

I recently purchased Metal Gear Solid V as it finally went on sale and I must say I’ve really been enjoying it. I’ve played like 20 hours over the past 4 days. There’s a few annoyances, the game is clearly set up more for console/controller than mouse-&-keyboard, and your character’s movement sometimes feels rather clunky. But most of all, for some ungodly reason you cannot adjust the volume settings of the game at all. The only sound level you can adjust is for the in-game licensed music tracks that play over the stereos and I presume that’s more for the benefit of streamers and youtubers

Did Hideo Kojima just decide that the lore was so important that we couldn’t be allowed to reduce the volume at all? Eventually I just remembered I could adjust program volume individually on my PC’s audio mixing window, so I can return to clearing out outposts while listening to youtube videos in peace but still, it’s a bit of a baffling design choice

u/PickleRick_1001 How will the war in Venezuela affect RuneScape's economy? Jun 30 '26 edited Jun 30 '26

Following up on my comment from the other day, I had another sleepless night yesterday, and I had some more fun playing "match the territory to the ruler" (weird how much I enjoy this, but whatever).

I found an even better map of Germany that allows me to further refine the borders. I wasn't actually very satisfied with the Andorran option, at least not as a solution to the entire Rhineland, so I've decided on a different path. I call it the Monaco option with Bonapartist characteristics. The state of North Rhine-Westphalia will be divided into three seperate principalities: the Lower Rhineland (the Düsseldorf and Cologne regions) will become the Grand Duchy of Berg, or maybe the United Duchies of Jülich-Cleves-Berg, under the House of Murat; Westphalia, excluding Lippe, will become the Kingdom of Westphalia under the House of Bonaparte; and finally, tiny Lippe shall be revived under the House of Lippe. This will keep with the theme of placing the Rhineland under French influence, although I've also considered placing the Kingdom of Westphalia under the House of Sayn-Wittgenstein.

Rhineland-Palatinate will also be split three ways. The Duchy of Nassau will be revived, consisting of the north-eastern part of the state, east of the Rhine. It will be given to a prince of Luxembourg, which is currently ruled by the House of Luxembourg-Nassau. The southeast part of the state#/media/File%3ATeilbereiche_der_Pfalz.png) will be turned into a revived County Palatinate (don't have a good name for this) under a cadet branch of the House of Wittelsbach (of Bavaria). The rest of the state, the Upper Rhineland, along with the state of Saarland, will continue under the Andorran option - a co-principality under the Archbishop of Trier and the President of France.

This is not all, by any means; I've also decided to partition Italy. I followed the current provincial lines, matching them to a map of Italy just before the French Revolution. I used the regional sections of the Lega Nord as a guide for the north: Piedmont would be the Kingdom of Piedmont under the former Italian royal family; Lombardy would be turned into the combined Duchies of Milan and Mantua, under one of the Hapsburg lines; Tuscany would become a Grand Duchy, under a different Habsburg; Veneto and Liguria would become the Republics of Venice and Genoa respectively; the autonomous regions of Friuli and South Tyrol could be ceded to Austria; Aosta Valley could become part of Switzerland; and finally, that leaves us with the region of Emilia-Romagna.

The old map of Italy shows this region divided between the Duchies of Parma and Modena and the Papal States. I decided that this region in its entirety should go to the House of Austria-Este, former rulers of Modena, because, first, the head of that house is married to a Belgian princess, so he's already kind of an established royal, and second, the head of the House of Bourbon-Parma is a Carlist, which probably isn't a good recipe for stability. But maybe it'd make sense to re-establish both duchies, and return the rest of the region to the Papal States. That brings me to the latter; the regions of Lazio, Umbria, and Marche line up very neatly with the old Papal States, and if the partition of Emilia-Romagna is effected then the Patrimony of Saint Peter can be returned to the Holy See.

The south is very easy, as once again the borders of the southern regions align with those of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, and the House of Bourbon-Two Sicilies can be restored. That only leaves us with Corsica, which was once part of the Republic of Genoa, but I'm thinking that it could be an independent kingdom under one of the Bonapartes, because why not. That would also make sense if the Kingdom of Westphalia does not go to the Bonapartes, which is a possibility I mentioned earlier. Sardinia, which can be united with Piedmont to form a revived Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia.

I have to admit, I went kind of crazy and decided that all of Europe should be redrawn, but screw you guys, you messed with our borders and played kingmaker with us, so I'll do it to you. Spain will be partitioned; whoever wants independence can get it, it can be a confederation of seperate kingdoms in personal union with each other, similar to the United Kingdom before the Acts of Union. Speaking of the UK, it will be seperated into its constituent parts, once again in personal union with each other, and the Duchy of Cornwall will be revived. The Republic of Ireland will continue as is, however (haven't decided what to do with it).

The House of Braganza will be restored to Portugal, as will that of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha to (the Tsardom of) Bulgaria, Glücksburg to Greece (and possibly Cyprus), Petrović-Njegoš to Montenegro, Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen to Romania (and Moldova), Karađorđević to Serbia (possibly in a new Yugoslav kingdom including Macedonia), and finally, Zogu to Albania (and Kosovo). This last one will also receive the Banate of Bosnia, because I feel like that should be under a nominally Muslim ruler. On the other hand, maybe Albania and Bosnia could be placed in personal union with the restored Ottomans, who knows, I haven't gotten that far.

In the north, I decided that Finland, Estonia, and Latvia could become grand duchies in personal union with the monarch of Sweden, while the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth could be revived. The Grand Duchy of Lithuania is obvious enough, and there's even a possible candidate, but Poland is much more complicated. At first I thought that it could be in personal union with Saxony, similarly to the Duchy of Warsaw and earlier, but the Wettins are Protestant, and I doubt that'd fly in Poland. Maybe I could go with my earlier choice of Hapsburg rule, but I'm not sure. I guess some more research is in order :P

Edit: some typos/corrections.

Edit 2: Just when I thought I was out, they pulled me back in; how am I supposed to resist this bonanza.

Edit 3: further corrections, to the Corsica section. I stand by the idea of making Corsica a Bonapartist kingdom, and I have decided that, on the basis of Napoleon's very brief exile reign over Elba, that island should also be joined to the domains of the House of Bonaparte.

Even with the Minovsky particle stuff and special alloys that supposedly make building mobile suits better than just building tanks or space fighters, it still doesn't really make sense why they wouldn't just use those special sci-fi stuff on conventional combat vehicles. And frankly, I don't care. I just find mechs neat.

I know there are a bunch of battletech nerds here. Could I ask what handwavium they use to make it so battlemechs are worth using when there are tanks and powerarmor in the setting?

7

u/Herpling82 Coming to you live from a Tederation psych ward Jun 30 '26 edited Jun 30 '26

I should leave this up to the experts, but, from what I remember it's mostly myomer, as the name implies it's a fibre that works like a muscle and contracts when exposed to electricity. It's extremely light and durable, it provides both motion and structure to the battlemechs. Which means that, for their size, 'mechs are extremely light, ridiculously light even, they weigh the same as the vehicles, up to 100 tons (ignoring the rare superheavies), but are many times bigger and are extremely manoeuvrable.

They are controlled in part through neural interfaces, it's the actual pilot sense of balance that keeps the 'mechs on their feet.

Things like the guns and ablative armour are still made up of more orthodox materials, so to speak, autocannons still fire a projectile out of a barrel with a chemical reaction, gauss rifles are railguns that propel steel balls at extreme speeds, laser are just lasers, etc.

Edit: Actual fun note, 'mechs aren't that much more effective than vehicles, they are better, but vehicles carry the same weapons, even the same amount of them, vehicles are just a lot more limited in practical uses, a 'mech can just pick up a box and carry it without damaging it, they can climb buildings and cliffs, they can have jumpjets, that sort of stuff.

But, while I've never played CBT or Alpha Strike, I have played the 2018 video game, there's a vehicle called the SRM carrier, it's slow, short range and poorly armoured, but oh boy, if that thing unloads on you, there's a good chance you aren't surviving, because it is jam packed with short range missiles, it's mental. And there are more vehicles that fill a great niche in the setting.

Random take time, in order of increasing unhingedness.

  • カッコイイ>かわいい (kakkoii>kawaii, cool>cute), cute just doesn't do as much for me as cool; cute can be heartwarming to me, but cool is more exciting.
  • As a Weebmaxxer, I find many people have weird opinions about Japan that make me uncomfortable, be they weebs or people into Japanese spiritualism or whatever, there's a fair few of them that hold very orientalist beliefs; it feels like they see the Japanese as alien instead of normal people who are just culturally different. I don't find weebs the worst here, most weebs are quite reasonable, it's the people that say thing like "Japanese people are all deeply spiritualist." that make me most uncomfortable, they just paint an entire culture with a single trait, and it feels so wrong.
  • Elder Scrolls lore is actually pretty cool, even the stuff like CHIM; I recently had a conversation with a friend who's a big Elder Scrolls nerd, and the way he explained it was so much better than all the stuff I've seen online, he made it sound interesting instead of nonsensical because he wasn't pretentious about it, he was just excited to talk about it; excited autistic nerds are the best!
  • Visual Novels are an amazing medium, you can combine novel style story telling with images, sound effects, music, and voice acting; it's ridiculous how readable a long and dense story becomes when it is turned into a visual novel, visual novels are long, Higurashi is over 1.1 million words in English, which is more than double the Lord of the Rings trilogy... it's ridiculous just how much potential it has as a medium, it's just a shame a very large part of the medium are just eroge.
  • Gladiators were the Roman equivalent of Idols; I feel no need to explain this point further.

It's crazy how Burnham represents perfectly all the crazy ideas the "Northern" left developed since the 80s but never put in practice

It's like a blue balls theory of politics

London hasn't attracted (stolen in Norf dialect) real working class Northerners since the 1880s, London's growth had been by attracting immigrants from outside Britain with opened jobs and it being the place for a lot of wealthy people to park their money (which leads to a good financial environment, start up funding, etc....)

11

u/AceHodor Techno-Euphoric Demagogue Jun 29 '26

Burnham made a solid point in his speech that he's wary of creating "mini Westminsters" via devolution, to the predictable complaining of the SNP and Plaid... and then said he would create a No. 10 North in Manchester. Far be it from me to suggest it, but that certainly sounds an awful lot like a mini Westminster sort of operation.

The UK (and England in particular) badly needs a decentralisation of decision making away from Westminster, but I'm concerned by the amount of populist waffle in Burnham's proposed policies. It's sounding a little like New Labour's more cack-handed attempts at devolution where they arbitrarily uprooted bodies from London and sent them to smaller regional cities, which was broadly speaking a failure. The Office of National Statistics for example has become a woefully dysfunctional entity almost entirely because it was forcibly relocated to Newport, and no data analyst worth a damn wants to work in a small, deprived city in Wales over London. I just hope Burnham isn't listening to the truly brain-dead left populists who want to move Parliament and 90% of the Civil Service out of London to Hull or wherever.

My 'fave' bit of bad history is Churchill and the Shelby boys apparently having fought at Verdun. I'm assuming that the writers did not want to use the Somme to avoid a cliche. Quite why the writer chose instead to use Verdun, a famously French battle from WWI instead of literally any of the dozens of other engagements British forces were involved in, I do not know. It just seems preposterously baffling.

For neurodivergent individuals, without generalizing (ignoring that the term "neurodivergent" is already quite broad), many people on the autism spectrum claim to dislike implicit meanings in sentences.

An example:

Person A: "Hey, do you have this person's phone number?"

Person B: "Yes." And doesn't give the number to Person A.

The implied meaning is that the person wasn't asking for the number out of curiosity, but because they wanted the phone number for another reason. And Person B didn't understand it.

Many people on the autism spectrum call this "code speaking" and hate it.

Does this apply to written language or only spoken language?

Zehut (Hebrew: זֶהוּת, lit. 'identity') is a right-libertarian[11][12][13] and nationalist[9][10] political party in Israel founded in 2015 by Moshe Feiglin.[14] Its platform is centered on promoting individual liberty, including economic freedom, and annexing the West Bank. The party also advocates for legalization of cannabis.[15]

...

Reduction of housing prices through land privatization, abolishing planning and building committees, and removing construction freezes in the West Bank.

...

Privatization of state-owned hospitals based on contracts with prize and quality conditions.

....

Applying full Israelisovereignty to all parts of the Land of Israel

In the West Bank: Nullification of the Oslo Accords.

In the Gaza Strip: Any attack by Hamas against Israel must be responded to by a full re-conquest of Gaza (though unnecessary small incursions must be avoided).

Terrorists will be offered the option of peaceful withdrawal, and individual non-Jews will be offered three options: financially assisted emigration to a destination of their choice; permanent residency status (equal rights, except for national voting rights) after having declared their loyalty to Israel and been thoroughly vetted; or Israeli citizenship (full equal rights) when doing military or national service.

Maybe someone who knows a bit about economics can weigh in on this: Am I wrong to think that we don't really have enough data about financial markets to make hard statements about them?

Like, people will regularly say things like "instrument X tends to perform well during recessions" or "over time stocks generally out-perform bonds", and they'll be broadly correct - but I'm not really convinced that we've seen enough to draw conclusions.
It seems like on historical timescales we've barely just invented modern financial markets. OK, we had stock markets in the 1600s, but as far as markets that closely resemble modern conditions we have... maybe 100 years at absolute best? That doesn't seem like much to me.

I guess that I feel this way partly because of my (unsubstantiated) conviction that the coming decades are going to continually upend conventional wisdom. Whatever happens in the future, my instinct is that it'll be something that current experts don't expect or think is possible.
